With every new Magic set, there's a honeymoon period where players try to make the cards work in Standard. In no particular order, here are the cards from Innistrad: Crimson Vow I expect players will still be in love with a year from now.

#1: Overcharged Amalgam

Blue creatures with flash are always the scariest, as they play really well with other instant-speed effects the color typically has access to. Even by that standard, Overcharged Amalgam is really impressive. A four-mana 3/3 flying with flash is already a great start, but once you factor in the ability to counter something, whether it be a spell or a trigger, the card looks really nice.

This card is not meant for control decks, because control decks generally don't have small creatures you want to exploit. The key will be making a deck that can fully utilize the card, and force the opponent to play into it. A deck like Noriyuki Mori's white-blue tempo deck from Worlds is the sort of shell this card could be good in.

Everyone knows about this one. Thalia, Guardian of Thraben is one of the best white creatures ever printed. It sees play in many older formats, so this is far from just a Standard card. For all the good things about Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, how effective it is depends a bit on the format. For example, it doesn't match up all that well against Mono-Green Aggro, since they have bigger creatures and not that many noncreature spells. The tax part of this card is going to be more effective against Izzet decks. We'll have to see how the format unfolds before knowing just how much play Thalia, Guardian of Thraben will see, but I suspect basically every white aggro deck will want it at the minimum.

#3: Abrade

Another reprint! Abrade saw a ton of play during its first time in Standard, and remains one of the best red removal spells that has ever been printed. The key to this card, though, is the number of relevant artifacts in the format. Two mana for 3 damage is not impressive on its own, but the flexibility to destroy an artifact is clutch.

During Abrade first time in Standard there were artifacts like Heart of Kiran and Aetherworks Marvel running around. Now, Abrade can kill an Esika's Chariot, but that isn't the greatest exchange because your opponent still is left with the creature tokens from the Chariot. I don't expect Abrade to make a massive impact right away, though it should still see some use. However, you never know what artifacts might get printed in future sets to change the value of this card.

#4: Ascendant Packleader

The premium one-drop that green decks have been waiting for has arrived. Ascendant Packleader is going to work really nicely in aggressive green decks as a turn-one play that can have its stats boosted as the game progresses. On power level alone it is very solid, and then once you realize that Mono-Green Aggro is already one of the top decks in the format and has been looking for a one-drop creature, the value on this card goes through the roof.

The question for Mono-Green Aggro will be how the deck can adjust to fit in Ascendant Packleader. It may want to cut turn-one tap lands like Tangled Florahedron for instance. However, the spells in the deck are so strong already, taking one out is always going to be tough.

I do think we will see Ascendant Packleader in at least some Mono-Green Aggro lists, though the deck doesn't play a ton of spells that cost at least four mana. Not many decks play a ton of expensive spells, which is why I think Ascendant Packleader is a well designed card. It does notably make Esika's Chariot a bit better (which is kind of crazy), just because it's a four-mana permanent.

#5: Dig Up

First of all, I want to say just how much I love the design on Dig Up. I think we will see this card in Standard, though it is going to fit better in combo-style decks. For instance, if Sultai Ultimatum were still in the format, this would be perfect as a way to potentially Diabolic Tutor for Emergent Ultimatum.

The flexibility of getting a land or a high-impact spell is always going to be worthy of consideration for decks that can easily cast Dig Up on turn one, or for the cleave cost later in the game. This one isn't going to be a format breaker, but has the potential to be an important role player in the right deck.

#6: Faithbound Judge//Sinner's Judgement

Faithbound Judge is a really powerful card that I see fitting best in a more controlling white deck. If we see a white-blue control deck for instance, this card might be a great fit. Faithbound Judge is very strong, and demands that your opponent deal with it. It does take a couple turns for the Judge to start attacking, but once it does, it packs a punch!

Later in the game you have access to Sinner's Judgement, which is very clearly a win condition on its own. It provides a three-turn ticking time bomb until the opponent is straight-up dead. This means you can rely on this card to close out games, kind of like Approach of the Second Sun. I expect players will have a lot of fun with this card.

#7: Eruth, Tormented Prophet

Of the cards I'm mentioning on this list, Eruth, Tormented Prophet is a bit more speculative—there's a chance it simply doesn't see play. I still think it will though, once people realize its true power and the best way to build around it. If you read it like you are drawing two cards a turn instead of one, it becomes great. The key is figuring out how to make that work.

To make Eruth, Tormented Prophet the best it can be, you need to be playing a deck that is aggressive and has a lot of cheap spells. That way if you exile two spells off Eruth you can play both in the same turn. Eruth should be at the top of your curve. It could even be played alongside a bunch of burn spells too. You just really want to be able to cast whatever you exile off Eruth, much like Light up the Stage. Once this is in play you don't actually get to draw cards, so it completely changes the way games play out, but I think it's a super cool card and I'm going to try to make it work.

#8: Manaform Hellkite

We have been getting a lot of really strong Dragons lately. I like Manaform Hellkite quite a bit, and it could be a nice fit in a deck like Izzet Dragons. I'm definitely loving the idea of casting Alrund's Epiphany with this card already on the battlefield. It will go better in decks with a high density of noncreature spells, so we are more likely to see it in Izzet than Gruul I think.

I don't expect this to see play over a card like Goldspan Dragon, which is why the upside of Manaform Hellkite is capped at the moment. If you play Hellkite on turn four and it immediately dies to removal you aren't particularly happy. I think it will find a home, but it has competition in the form of the Dragons already available in Standard.

#9: Wash Away

Wash Away is going to see play in older formats, but I suspect it will be useful in Standard as well. Remember that foretell cards are popular right now, and paying one mana to counter an Alrund's Epiphany is really sweet. This card isn't getting a ton of hype for Standard, but it should be. It looks like a very effective sideboard card that could even be in the maindeck. It plays nicely alongside Elite Spellbinder as well.

#10: Bloodtithe Harvester

There are a bunch of Vampires that are going to see play in Innistrad: Crimson Vow, but Bloodtithe Harvester is at the top of the list. As a 3/2 that gives you a free Blood token, this card would be fine even without the ability to cash it in as a removal spell. Vampire decks are going to be very pleased to get so much for two mana. It'll be interesting to see how deep Vampire decks go on the Blood token subtheme.

#11: Voltaic Visionary//Volt-Charged Berserker

Voltaic Visionary is one of the best cards in Innistrad: Crimson Vow, and people aren't talking about it enough. Before I get into how great it is though, there is a clear downside to address. Yes, Voltaic Visionary is a 1-toughness threat that can immediately die to pretty much any removal spell before you get a chance to activate it. However, if it does die you probably aren't trading down on mana for your two-mana investment.

If you untap with this you're going to activate it immediately. If you find a land or a cheap spell off it, you're golden. You do take 2 damage, but in red aggressive decks this shouldn't be a huge deal. Now you have already gotten card advantage off Voltaic Visionary, and it turns into a two-mana 4-power creature! That's such an awesome rate, I think we could see a return of Mono-Red Aggro purely because of Voltaic Visionary.

#12: Edgar, Charmed Groom//Edgar Markov's Coffin

Edgar, Charmed Groom is a pretty awesome creature. Yes, it's good with other Vampires, so it will be at its best in a Vampire-focused deck. That being said, it doesn't have to be played alongside a ton of other Vampires to be good. It's a four-mana threat that you really don't mind losing because it just turns into Edgar Markov's Coffin. This is going to be really useful for white-black decks, the only question is what will be the best way to build a deck around this card.

#13: Kessig Wolfrider

There aren't a ton of good red one-drops in Standard, which has definitely hurt red decks. I think Kessig Wolfrider is better than some of the other available one-mana plays in the format. It can attack but also becomes a nice mana sink in a deck that likely has a lot of inexpensive cards in it. Churning out 3-power threats for three mana is a pretty powerful ability on a creature that only costs one mana. Plus, it's a Human, so it has some tribal synergy as well.

#14: Voldaren Estate

Lands are cards too! Voldaren Estate is one of the cards that is going to pull the Vampire deck together. Playing a ton of creatures of the same tribe should have benefits, and this is a very good land in a focused Vampire deck. Even without the ability to generate Blood tokens, being an untapped land that can make whatever color you want is very nice. It's possible we'll see some Mardu Vampires decks because of how this card lets you stretch your manabase.

#15: The New Tap Lands

We saw these lands early in preview season, and we already know that they will become an important part of the format. Having good nonbasic lands opens up the possibilities for a lot more decks. Right now, there are a lot of monocolor and two-color decks simply because the mana doesn't exist for anything else, and these lands should help.
