Monday's Modern ban of five cards was the biggest change to the format since 2011, when Wizards banned six cards after the format debuted in the Pro Tour—the first round of bans in its history. The impact of Monday's changes cannot be understated. They've completely shaken up the metagame.
By banning Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Mystic Sanctuary, Wizards fatally gutted the Four-Color Control deck that had been dominating the format for the better part of a year, opening up a ton of room for other decks. Furthermore, removing Field of the Dead has cut down Primeval Titan land decks, another oppressive pillar of the metagame. Along with the loss of Simian Spirit Guide hurting combo decks like Oops All Spells, and Tibalt's Trickery dead in the water, Modern is now an exciting place full of opportunity for a wide variety of strategies.
Today I want to break down the biggest winners from the bans, and paint a picture of what the metagame will look like heading into the spring.
Without Four-Color Control policing aggressive decks with loads of removal and roadblocks like Field of the Dead, Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, and Omnath, Locus of Creation, the lid has been opened on aggressive decks that were previously contained.
This includes various red aggro decks, like Izzet Prowess and Burn that are pure in their raw aggression. There are also aggressive decks that tow the line between aggro and combo, like Hammer Time and Bogles. Finally, there are disruptive aggressive decks like Spirits, Death and Taxes, and Humans that have all won from the bans.
Izzet Prowess was one of the winningest decks in Modern before Zendikar Rising. Then control decks with Omnath, Locus of Creation and the new combo deck Oops All Spells teamed up to wipe it out. Now it's back center stage as one of the format's premier decks.

With Stoneforge Mystic and Steelshaper's Gift to help find Colossus Hammer, and Sigarda's Aid and Puresteel Paladin to equip it, the deck is consistent. It's also very powerful, and can deal massive amounts of damage very quickly—sometimes enough for a turn-three kill. With a toolbox of utility equipment and Lurrus of the Dream-Den for long-term card advantage, it's also surprisingly well-rounded. This is especially so after sideboarding disruption like Thoughtseize. This sort of strategy had a hard time against Four-Color Control, but it's now in a good position to beat aggressive decks while having the speed to race combo.
The bans have also been very good to Selesnya Auras, or Bogles.

Humans is another aggressive deck with disruptive elements. Meddling Mage and Kitesail Freebooter mess with opposing spells, and they are backed up by removal like Reflector Mage. The tribe went from one of the fiercest decks in Modern to a non-factor through 2020, but it's another winner from the bans.
Without control decks killing all of their creatures, Humans will have more ability to put together synergies. It also faces less pressure from combo decks that could be difficult to stop. Plus, it has also gained a new tool from Kaldheim in Realmwalker, which this list puts to use as a strong one-of. Realmwalker is capable of generating a lot of card advantage in any tribal deck.
Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Field of the Dead were extremely difficult to grind out over a long game, which made life very difficult for non-blue midrange decks. Now that Uro and Field are removed, decks like Jund and Rakdos Midrange finally have some breathing room. These decks also tend to be full of creature removal and are ideal for containing aggressive decks, so they have a great opportunity in this new metagame. Black-red decks will see a resurgence in its various forms, from classic Jund to various Death's Shadow builds.
One of the top decks during the reign of Four-Color Control was Rakdos Death's Shadow, which rose after Zendikar Rising brought Scourge of the Skyclaves. By the end, control had fought back with sideboards packed with Celestial Purge, but now Rakdos will find the world a much less hostile place.

Rakdos will have an easier time in a metagame full of creature decks vulnerable to removal, which it plays a ton of in the maindeck. With Kolaghan's Command, it can also prey on Aether Vial. Death's Shadow itself has also improved, and is a particularly big problem for the red aggro decks like Izzet and Burn without easy ways to contain it.
The past months have also seen the rise of Rakdos Midrange, essentially a green-less Jund deck.

The deck was designed to make the most of Blood Moon, but without Four-Color Control nor Field of the Dead decks around anymore, I expect it's now a liability in the more aggressive metagame. By moving it to the sideboard and shifting toward more removal, this strategy should be a good one after the bans.
In a world of aggressive decks, it's possible the best route is to go back to classic Jund. Tarmogoyf is one of the best roadblocks in the game, and Wrenn and Six is perfect for pestering creatures like Noble Hierarch and Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.

One of the best tools from Jund will be sideboard Engineered Explosives, an efficient and flexible sweeper. It's ideal for containing aggressive decks full of one-drops like Izzet, and those with troublesome noncreature permanents like Aether Vial and Sigarda's Aid.
Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath defined control in Modern since its release just over a year ago. Now that it's banned we will see more classic Azorius versions make a comeback.
Control decks are hard to create without a specific metagame to attack, so it might be some time before control rises to the top again, but I expect that it's only a matter of time before it becomes a major factor in the metagame.

This take on post-ban Azorius resembles Legacy Miracles, down to the playset of Force of Negation filling in for Force of Will. It also takes advantage of Omen of the Sea ability to set up Counterbalance, both when it enters the battlefield and when sacrificed to Scry. Omen of the Sea also helps set up Terminus, which is a tremendous asset in this new aggressive metagame.
When it's difficult to be reactive and control a metagame still in development, another approach is to get more proactive, like with Stoneforge Mystic.

The list includes a major Kaldheim update with two copies of Birgi, God of Storytelling replacing Goblin Electromancer. It costs one more mana, but the upside is tremendous. By adding a mana for each spell it effectively reduces the cost of your next spell by one, but adds synergy with the one-mana blue cantrips that can't be reduced, essentially making them free to cast. It also comes with the entire back half Harnfel, Horn of Bounty as an incredible card-drawing engine capable of ripping through the deck and winning the game outright.

The infinite damage combo between Heliod, Sun-Crowned and Walking Ballista forms the backbone of the counters-based deck known as Heliod Company.
The strategy is unique among combo decks for being constructed almost entirely of creatures, so while its end goal is to go infinite, it's inherently very aggressive. Cards like Luminarch Aspirant and Conclave Mentor are capable of applying massive pressure. The deck hit the next level with the arrival of Skyclave Apparition in Zendikar Rising, which will serve it well heading into the new metagame full of great threats to remove. With removal, life gain, and lots of blockers, Heliod Company is ideal for beating aggressive decks, and so it should be a great option after the bans.
Things are also looking good for Tron, which benefits from the bans in various ways.

For one, Tron will have an easier time now that players won't need Blood Moon to deal with Field of the Dead. Two, it has always preyed on midrange decks like Jund, which are making a big comeback. It also comes with plenty of great tools for beating aggro, like sweepers and Thragtusk. Burn and the fastest red aggro decks like Izzet Prowess could be a problem, but Tron will have plenty of game in this new meta.
My pick for the biggest potential surprise after the bans is Elves, which quietly received some huge upgrades from Kaldheim.

Modern Elves is inherently very aggressive, and Elvish Warmaster is one of the best aggressive tools the tribe has ever received. Realmwalker brings its own incredible potential as a source of card advantage. Together they combine to make Elves an entirely different animal than it was last year, and could propel it to the top of the metagame without Four-Color Control to contend with.
The bans aren't all sunshine and roses for everyone. The changing texture of the metagame will prove troublesome for some decks that may have actually had an easier time before. Dimir Mill was surprisingly popular before the bans and a matchup I found troublesome when playing Four-Color Control. Now it's going to really struggle against the variety of aggressive decks that have risen to the top, as well as the disruption and threats from Rakdos decks.
It's a similar story for Gruul Ponza, which will find Blood Moon and Pillage less useful than before, and aggressive decks too fast for its clunky creatures to contain. I don't expect Eldrazi Tron to regain its former glory, nor will Urza, Lord High Artificer decks suddenly be great again in a world still lacking Mox Opal.
There certainly is a ton of opportunity in the new Modern, however, and it's going to be exciting to see what develops.
