Last week I covered some of the most overlooked cards in Toon Chaos: the Fire Warriors. Cards like Immortal Phoenix Gearfried, Sublimation Knight and Infernoble Knight - Roland were initially part of an OCG Structure Deck, but they've hitched a ride in Toon Chaos and already hit the TCG!

Infernobles will receive a full set of supporting monsters, spells, and traps in Rise of the Duelist this August, but that doesn't mean you have to wait to play them. I've cooked up two deck lists that let you play Immortal Phoenix Gearfried early. before it gets even better when ROTD arrives. Immortal Phoenix Gearfried's a worthy boss monster and it has plenty of synergy with the new support.

After all, it was the cover card of an OCG Structure Deck, so it should be able to stand on its own. Let's dive in and show you what it's good for.

A Blazing Offensive With Raptinus' Sword

Immortal Phoenix Gearfried's negation effect and simple summoning conditions make it pretty easy to put into play, and it's astonishingly effective once it's there. Its monster-equipping effect lets it dispatch powerful threats even if they have immunity from destruction or targeting, and its monster negation helps secure aggressivee plays and defend your set-up.

Immortal Phoenix Gearfried's major weakness is that its second effect is Battle Phase-only, and that's why I've made the decision to build this deck as a going-second strategy. It's risky, but there's a lot of summoning power here that can help you break through your opponent's board. You can also leverage Evenly Matched really well, and more importantly you can abuse Supermagic Sword of Raptinus.

Getting Immortal Phoenix Gearfried onto the table is as simple as Special Summoning it from your hand by banishing an Equip Spell on your field or in the graveyard, or by banishing a monster that's equipped to another monster on the field. You can load an Equip Spell into the graveyard by activating the second effect of Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights. You'll send an Equip Spell to the graveyard whether you resolve Isolde or not, so the conditions to Summon Immortal Phoenix Gearfried are locked even if your opponent has an Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring or Infinite Impermanence waiting for you.

Actually getting Immortal Phoenix Gearfried to your hand is a totally different challenge. You can't search it with Reinforcement of the Army, and if you add it to your hand with Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights you won't be able to summon it that turn. Thankfully there's another approach to finding Immortal Phoenix Gearfried: sending it to the graveyard. Once Immortal Phoenix Gearfried hits the graveyard it's a valid target for Monster Reborn, or the Reborn-like effect of Evocator Eveque. You can also add it back to your hand with Infernoble Knight - Renaud and The Warrior Returning Alive, so you can immediately play it by banishing an equip.

On the surface this deck doesn't do much besides trying to Link Summon Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights as quickly as possible. Immortal Phoenix Gearfried will often end up in the graveyard as a byproduct of your typical Link plays. Sublimation Knight equips Immortal Phoenix Gearfried to itself when it's Summoned, and naturally Immortal Phoenix Gearfried will end up in the graveyard when Sublimation Knight's used as a Link or Synchro Material. Sublimation Knight's one of your main targets for Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights, and a great pairing with your other extenders. Speaking of extenders, this deck is loaded with free Special Summons that help you reach Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights as consistently as possible.

Super Quantum Red Layer is one of the first monsters you'll summon if you draw it, and it's conveniently a Fire Warrior. Blue Mountain Butterspy pairs up with all of your other Warrior Normal Summons, and Boost Warrior's an extender that comes online when you control a Tuner. Ideally you'll open with Sublimation Knight and either Super Quantum Red Layer or Blue Mountain Butterspy to Summon Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights, and put Immortal Phoenix Gearfried into the graveyard. After that there's one more card you'll want to see: Infernoble Knight - Renaud.

Once you Summon Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights you'll have a few paths to choose from. If Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights's negated, but you have Infernoble Knight - Renaud and another Fire Warrior you can summon, you'll Special Summon Infernoble Knight - Renaud with its effect and add Immortal Phoenix Gearfried from your graveyard to your hand. It's a little tricky, and you'll need another extender, but it's possible. Ideally though, you'll Summon Infernoble Knight - Renaud off Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights's effect and loop Immortal Phoenix Gearfried right back to your hand. From there you can Summon Immortal Phoenix Gearfried by banishing the Equip Spell you sent to the graveyard.

So what do you do with Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights's search effect? You'll want to grab none other than Infernoble Knight - Roland! Normally Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights will keep you from summoning or activating the effects of whatever Warrior you added to your hand, but Roland bypasses that restriction thanks to its Quick Effect. You can simply equip Roland at the start of your opponent's turn to bring Immortal Phoenix Gearfried's negation effect online. Roland will find more fodder for Immortal Phoenix Gearfried's effect during the End Phase, and by that point you'll probably have Divine Sword - Phoenix Blade in play.

Leveraging The Right Equip Spells

Any deck playing Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights needs to carefully select its Equip Spells, but with Immortal Phoenix Gearfried in the mix there are some extra considerations to make. Luckily Infernoble Knight - Roland and Sublimation Knight offer extra opportunities to get Equip Cards on the field, and Immortal Phoenix Gearfried can equip the opponent's monsters to itself during the Battle Phase. Divine Sword - Phoenix Blade is a must, and I like Moon Mirror Shield as an option against specific floodgates. What sets this build apart is its use of going-second Equip Spells like Autonomous Action Unit and Supermagic Sword of Raptinus.

Between Hiita the Fire Charmer, Ablaze and Autonomous Action Unit you'll have plenty of opportunities to use your opponent's graveyard against them. Recycling Autonomous Action Unit with Infernoble Knight - Renaud can be surprisingly disruptive and effectively a source of free Link 2 monsters. Supermagic Sword of Raptinus is a little more complicated, but it's basically another form of Summoning power tied to an Equip Spell. Both cards are at their best after your opponent has made the first move, but they're even on the first turn. Hand traps are a solid target for Autonomous Action Unit, and Supermagic Sword of Raptinus offers targeting immunity for the monsters it's equipped to.

The extra Normal Summon from Raptinus mostly benefits Evocator Eveque, but you can also use it to Normal Summon Immortal Phoenix Gearfried from your hand in a pinch. With so much summoning power at your disposal you can really make effective use of your Extra Deck Synchros and Link Monsters, including Gouki The Powerload Ogre. I'm a big fan of anything that's unaffected by other card effects, and Gouki The Powerload Ogre's extremely easy to Summon in this strategy. It's not nearly as strong as some other Link 4s, but it's a lot harder to stop. You can typically transition into Summoning Gouki The Powerload Ogre after your Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights is negated if you have enough extenders.

Infernoble Knight - Renaud and Squeaknight play the roles of Level 1 Tuners, so there's plenty of Synchro Summoning opportunities. You can rapidly Summon T.G. Hyper Librarian and Formula Synchron for some quick draws and hopefully find Immortal Phoenix Gearfried along the way. The deck's extremely linear, but there's a lot of room to expand on Extra Deck combos with Crystron Halqifibrax. If you want to angle the deck towards going first you could substitute Supermagic Sword of Raptinus for other Equip Spells, including more copies of Divine Sword - Phoenix Blade, and drop Evenly Matched.

Gearfried The Pirate King

Immortal Phoenix Gearfried easily fits into strategies that play Equip Spells and Equip Cards. You're not going to see Immortal Phoenix Gearfried as often, but your entire strategy isn't built around it anyways. It's an extra monster that's usually free to summon, and it leverages your existing Equip Cards into monster negation. It's definitely useful, although it's not needed everywhere. A deck like Plunder Patrolls already has on-theme monster negation, but Plunder Patrollship Lys isn't always available. In those situations, or even when you simply want to double up on effect negation, Immortal Phoenix Gearfried becomes a very interesting tech choice.

Emblem of the Plunder Patroll does nothing for the Plunder Patroll deck after it hits the graveyard, so banishing it to Summon Immortal Phoenix Gearfried is actually one of the best things you can do with it. You can equip Emblem of the Plunder Patroll from the deck by banishing Plunder Patroll Shipshape Ships Shipping from your graveyard, which lands Emblem of the Plunder Patroll in the graveyard extremely quickly in the early game. Resolving or discarding Plunder Patroll Shipshape Ships Shipping almost immediately sets up Immortal Phoenix Gearfried's Summoning conditions, and you can always banish a Plunder Patroll monster that's equipped to your Patrollships.

Immortal Phoenix Gearfried can conflict with the effects of your Patrollships by eating their equipped Plunder Patroll cards. Patrollships other than Plunder Patrollship Lys need an equipped Plunder Patroll card to become Quick Effects, so you'll want to fire off those effects before you activate Immortal Phoenix Gearfried. It's a little challenging, but you can 'reload' your equips thanks to Blackbeard, the Plunder Patroll Captain, Redbeard, the Plunder Patroll Matey, and Plunder Patroll Parrrty. There's a lot of equipping you can do on your opponent's turn to make sure Immortal Phoenix Gearfried isn't greedily consuming too many of your cards.

At worst, Immortal Phoenix Gearfried will be discarded by a Danger! or by Plunder Patroll Shipyarrrd. At best, Immortal Phoenix Gearfried's that extra piece of removal and monster negation needed to break your opponent's board, answer monster with targeting immunity that Plunder Patrollship Brann can't touch, and defend your set-up from one more piece of your opponent's combo. Plunder Patrolls are hardly the only strategy that can effectively leverage Immortal Phoenix Gearfried, but right now it's easily one of the best.
