As spoilers come rolling in for Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, it's clear there are a ton of new, sweet cards in this set. I'll be talking more about the new cards in future articles, but this week, I wanted to talk about some of the proven commodities that are returning to Standard.

Of all the reprints in Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, only three have already proven themselves in high-power formats like Modern and Legacy. Today I want to evaluate them in post-rotation Standard, and explore how they may help the format evolve.

Field of Ruin

Field of Ruin has never been more important than it will be in the future Standard environment, at least if control and midrange decks are going to have a chance against aggro. Why is Field of Ruin so important?

There aren't many nonbasic lands to choose from in Standard, but one cycle that sticks out in a big way are the creature lands that got printed in Forgotten Realms. We have seen how important these lands have become, and they will be even more important as the format shrinks.

I personally thought we could see the return of Ghost Quarter as some form of land disruption, but Field of Ruin is a better card, and I'm glad that is the direction WotC has gone in here. Field of Ruin is a colorless land, but it can also be mana fixing. If given enough time, you can use it to find a basic land that may produce colored mana you are in need of.

People see Field of Ruin as having a three-mana activation cost—Field itself, plus two more mana. In reality it's a lot closer to costing two mana, because the land you find off Field of Ruin comes into play untapped. This means there are a lot of situations where you can activate Field of Ruin and then immediately make an additional play. Field of Ruin is in itself a land, so it's also not costing you a spell to deal with an opposing land, which is quite relevant.

To provide an example for what type of deck Field of Ruin is good in let's look at a Dimir Control list from a recent Pioneer League:

Take a close look at the manabase here. Typically Field of Ruin shows up in two-color decks that are more control-oriented like this one. We don't see the full four copies of Field of Ruin here, especially since there are other colorless-producing lands like Geier Reach Sanitarium and Blast Zone. That's a lot of colorless producing lands, but Field of Ruin isn't fully colorless, since it turns into a basic land once you activate it. I have seen plenty of decks that do play the full playset of Field of Ruins. This is going to be contextual, based on the deck and given format.

You don't want to hurt your own manabase too much, but the value Field of Ruin provides is undeniable. My suspicion is we are likely to see decks in Standard that want three or four copies of Field of Ruin even though that hasn't been the recent trend. Field of Ruin has been Standard legal already, as it was printed in Theros Beyond Death. However, we are entering a completely new Standard format, and the card is going to be much more important in this new format.

Faceless Haven

Control decks have struggled lately in general, and a lot of that is due to the fact that the Forgotten Realms land cycle are generally better in aggressive decks. You can even play them alongside Faceless Haven. Faceless Haven is also going to be an extremely important manland that needs to be answered for a variety of reasons. Aggressive decks can curve out and finish the game by attacking, or in the case of Faceless Haven, by putting an enlightened counter on it with The Book of Exalted Deeds. The list of reasons to play Field of Ruin continues to grow.

Pithing Needle

Of the three cards I'm highlighting today, this is the most underrated.

Pithing Needle has been reprinted a number of times, but it still feels like a while since it has been around in Standard. The card is an important way to keep activated abilities in check, and has been used off and on throughout the years as an answer to planeswalkers, artifacts, lands, and other problematic permanents.

That's right, I did say lands. This is another card that can completely shut down Faceless Haven, so it is similar to Field of Ruin in terms of being a way to interact with some of the scary lands in Standard. Unlike Field of Ruin however, you are only answering the land's activated ability, so naming a land with Pithing Needle effectively puts you down a card. On the other hand, if you play Pithing Needle and name your opponent's planeswalker, now you are trading a spell for a spell.

Sometimes being down a card with Pithing Needle is okay, especially because this is only a one-mana investment, and will likely be played in decks with forms of card advantage to gain that resource back. Also, if you do name a card the opponent is playing multiple copies of with Pithing Needle, you can strand cards in the opponent's hand if they draw multiples.

Unlike Sorcerous Spyglass though, you don't get the privilege of seeing the opponent's hand when playing Pithing Needle, which is the exchange you get by paying one less mana for the effect. Sorceress Spyglass is the card we have seen in Standard more recently, but Pithing Needle requires more finesse, as sometimes you will have to name a card not knowing if the opponent has it in their hand or not. This is where knowledge about the opponent's deck becomes important.

Unlike Field of Ruin, I doubt decks will play four copies of Pithing Needle. It is more likely to be a one or two-of in the sideboard to answer specific troublesome cards. It's still a very reasonable reactive card that we now have access to in Standard, and I'm quite happy to see it again.

Delver of Secrets

I've saved the best for last.

Delver of Secrets is definitely one of the best blue creatures ever printed. Delver is of course far from a Standard-only card, in fact it's not really known for its Standard usage. While Delver has done good work in Modern, Legacy is where the card has truly shined.

It's unusual to find a card that sees more play in older formats than it does in formats with less sets in them. Part of the reason for this is, of course, Brainstorm. Alongside other cheap cantrips, Brainstorm makes it easy to flip Delver, and one-mana threats shine in any format with Wasteland.

We know it's great in Legacy, but will it see Standard play? Let's take a trip down memory lane, and look at a list of a Delver of Secrets deck from when it was legal in Standard:

Delver of Secrets decks don't want too many creatures, as they require a lot of instants and sorceries in order to attempt to flip Delver more reliably. Delver should be one of only a handful of win conditions in your deck.

This was a classic tempo deck full of cheap cantrips and disruption. While Azorius certainly could be an option in the new Standard format, I believe it's more likely we see an Izzet-based Delver deck. Here is one possible list:

This deck utilizes a handful of new tools from Midnight Hunt, and there certainly may be a card I missed or cards that got recently spoiled that also deserve some consideration. I'm not confident on whether you want the Snow-Covered theme or not, but playing Volatile Fjord makes a lot of sense because of the lack of good mana fixing in these colors.

Shatterskull Smashing is a land that also flips your Delver of Secrets, so playing more copies of that card makes sense. There are a ton of good spells in these colors, and the combination of the Dragons and Alrund's Epiphany will finish games if Delver doesn't. The issue with the deck is the mana cost of the cards is a bit expensive for a deck with Delver in it, so in that sense this isn't a traditional Delver deck. Still, there are a lot of instants and sorceries to help it flip quickly.

Part of whether or not Delver of Secrets will do well in Standard will also depend on the metagame, and what cards people are playing in their decks. For instance, if there are a lot of cards like Frost Bite and Play with Fire running around, this deck might be better off just being a Dragons deck, and not utilizing Delver at all. You don't want your Delver to immediately die to spot removal. If the deck doesn't end up wanting Delver you can play Galazeth Prismari and a couple other spells instead very easily.

There will be a number of directions to take the Izzet colors. As exciting as Delver is, it's not going to earn a Standard ban or anything like that, which makes it a very good inclusion in terms of power level for Midnight Hunt.
