When I first started playing Magic, I loved playing Commander.

My first Commander was Oona, Queen of the Fae. And yes, I foolishly thought I could mill out three opponents pre-Phenax, God of Deception.

My second Commander was Kaalia of the Vast, and nothing made me happier than using Kaalia to put a Master of Cruelties into play, tapped and attacking.

After that, I built Selvala, Explorer Returned and my love for green things that let me draw cards was born.

I haven't played Commander in a very long time.

Apparently, having a global pandemic exile me to my bedroom was all I needed for that to change.

How I Got Back Into It

I was lucky enough to play a Core Set 2021 Pre-Release. A few friends were playing EDH and one was kind enough to bring a deck for me. They gave me some choices, but ultimately I ended up picking Karametra, God of Harvests.

It took me back to my Selvala, Explorer Returned deck. But it was more than that.

Something about sitting there with three friends, trying to shuffle 99 cards and dropping them everywhere and scrolling through TikTok while someone took a five minute turn made me miss the feeling of EDH.

Because that's just it. Playing Commander isn't like playing other games of Magic. It's an experience within itself to be there, and it's one I hadn't realized I missed.

Choosing My Commanders

That weekend I picked up a borderless Teferi, Master of Time and convinced myself I wanted a blue Commander deck. Knowing how much I loved playing green in the format, I was sold on it being a second color.

To me, this was convenient, because I had told myself for a while that if I built a deck it would be Atraxa, Praetors' Voice.

But I really didn't want to be that person. More importantly, I really didn't want to spend the money required to build a four-color mana base.

I wanted a deck I could enjoy, afford and not ruin too many days with. But since most of my collection was elsewhere, I wasn't working with much.

I had a bunch of sealed pools from a Grand Prix I'd played in January, some promos, two Pioneer decks and a pile of cards I'd gotten out of boosters over a few months.

I'd heard some fun things about Thrasios, Triton Hero and started there. It seemed free to add a partner, and while the majority of the internet seemed to recommend Vial Smasher the Fierce, I (again) wasn't willing to put the resources into it, so I went with Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix.

Magic Is Expensive

Now, as I mentioned, I didn't have access to much of a starting point, and I was looking at building this deck with a budget in mind.

I started by buying an Estrid, the Masked pre-con. It had the staples all Commander decks come with, but I chose this one because it would have Simic-specific lands and cards, including Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle (which prior to Double Masters was worth a pretty penny).

I took what I wanted out of the deck—Sol Ring, some lands, Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle and Reclamation Sage.

Then I buylisted the rest to a store, including random cards from the piles that seem to come with being a Magic player. It took a while to input all the random $0.10 commons, but I had nothing but time. After getting a nice store credit bonus, I ended up with a good idea of the budget I had to complete the deck.

In between receiving the Estrid deck and buylisting everything, I had acquired some cards from Twitter sales (Mark Nestico was a great resource; you can read his articles here).

One of the ways I was able to stretch my budget was buying as many cards as I could in non-near-mint condition. I made sure the quality was sleeve-playable, but since I'm planning on keeping this deck for a while, resaleability wasn't a factor for me. I snagged a 3rd Edition Mana Vault in "Good" condition for $42 #stonks!

I proxied the deck up while I waited for everything to process. I had some time before putting that store credit to work, and it allowed me to make some changes.

This is the list I'm settled on for now:

Upgrades!

I want to be clear: I didn't design this deck to be broken, or even good. I just want to draw some cards and if I happen to empty my library and win, that's cool. If not, I had fun trying.

The deck can definitely be improved; this is not an optimal list for Thrasios, Triton Hero and Kydele, Chosen of Kruphix, but it is my list. Commander decks feel very personal to me, and if given an unlimited amount of money to build the deck, I would still just be trying to draw cards and have fun. But it would have a better mana base and be foiled out.

I have a list of upgrades I'd like to add to the deck as time goes on:

When I finished my deck and decided to write an article about the process of getting there, I asked if people had any questions they wanted answered.

Play Group Questions

As someone who hasn't played in a while, let alone with a group consistently, it took me by surprise how many people expected me to have an established group/pod. A lot of the questions I received were about how I had done X relative to the expected pod meta and power level.

The truth is, it wasn't a huge factor for me. I knew my friends had decks that looked fun and weren't overly oppressive or broken, and that worked for me, so I stuck to that power level.

"When given the choice between a fun build and a competitive build, which is more gratifying?"

I will always, always, always build the fun deck in Commander. In this format exclusively, I don't care if I win, I just want to have fun.

I'm choosing not to play Narset, Parter of Veils and more Wheel of Fortune effects for this reason.

"How did other content change or influence the way you build your deck?"

I read some of the deck guides I'd seen on TCGplayer and looked at the EDHREC card distribution statistics to influence some decisions, particularly when building my mana base. But mostly, I picked cards I liked and used the articles to make sure I wasn't missing anything essential.

"What do you consider a good game, and how much does winning factor into having a good time?"

I consider a good game to be one where I had at least one turn of trying to draw a bunch of cards, untapping my permanents, and trying to draw more.

The next player could untap and kill me on the spot, and I'd die happy knowing I had 30 cards in hand!

"Are there any design decisions you made driven by your then-inexperience? I.e. 'I don't know how this mechanic works so I'm cutting this card from my deck.'"

A friend had to convince me to play Isochron Scepter. I'd never played it outside of Australian 7-Point Highlander, and I hadn't really read the card. I think exiling Dramatic Reversal to Isochron Scepter is cool, but probably more overpowered than I like.

"How did you construct your mana base?"

Initially, I took all the Commander lands and Simic lands that came with the Estrid, the Masked deck, a Fabled Passage I owned, and filled it out with the appropriate amount of Islands and Forests.

Then I ordered a Minamo, School at Water's Edge, Opal Palace, Exotic Orchard, Lumbering Falls and Reliquary Tower.

Improving the mana base is the first upgrade I'll be making.

"How did your budget and lack of collection factor into the decklist?"

My mana base took the biggest hit—it's not even playing a Breeding Pool, and that's probably the first card on my upgrade list. I'm missing cards like Birds of Paradise, Arcane Signet and Thought Vessel, which aren't super expensive and will eventually make their way into the deck, just not now. On the more expensive side of the spectrum are Rings of Brighthearth, Staff of Domination and similar cards that would push the deck into the oppressive side of things, so I'm not sure if I'd want to play with them.

"How did you weigh choosing between format staples and cards that work with the deck's theme?"

My initial list had Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury (a pet card) and Rashmi, Eternities Crafter (a card I'd always wanted to play). Eventually, they were cut for some mana rocks, but I'm sure they'll find their way back into the deck at some point.

"Ok I'm ready for you on Game Knights"

This isn't a question, but thanks, me too.
