Ah, yes, Phantom Knights. The best engine that was never really a deck.

I guess I shouldn't say "never a deck," but for the longest time, every Phantom Knight deck was always just something else with Phantom Knights as a supporting cast. It would've been like calling a deck "Burning Abyss" when you just stuck Graff, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and Cir, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss into whatever else you wanted to play: you're not wrong, but you're definitely not right.

Phantom Rage 100% changed that. Far from a fringe strategy you'd shove into other decks, today's Phantom Knights have the power to be a real strategy. Notably one where you'd want to see multiples of several Phantom Knights cards that were underperformers in past builds.

Case in point: it sure feels weird putting three copies of The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves in a deck again, doesn't it?

But just because Phantom Knights can exist on their own now, doesn't mean you can't still splash them in a bevy of other strategies. A few weeks ago, I wrote about Blackwings, leveraging just a handful of Phantom Knights cards. And when I was talking about Phantom Rage here, The Phantom Knights of Torn Scales made the top of the list for good reason. Thanks to Phantom Rage, any numbers of Phantom Knights is now workable.

Priority = EZPZ Bardiche

You can't distill this deck down to "Bardiche and Friends," but The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche is such a powerful card I can't overstate how imperative it is for literally every iteration of Phantom Knights. You could build conventional Burning Abyss Phantom Knights, pure Phantom Knights, or, I don't know, Ice Barrier Watt Phantom Knights, and The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche would still be the meat of your deck.

Not only is it relatively easy to make, but it pushes the deck towards three of its ultimate goals: destroying cards, searching counters, and extending combos. Even The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche Link arrows are built for maximum output within its theme.

If you're not familiar with Phantom Knights, the gist of the deck is simple - sending Phantom Knights to the graveyard nets you more Phantom Knights through direct or indirect means, often extending way beyond your first effects and cascading as you go. In that regard, The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche is simply the manifestation of everything good about the strategy.

Consider this: imagine summoning The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche and sending The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak to the yard to search The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigandine. Then, banish The Phantom Knights of Ancient Cloak to search and Special Summon The Phantom Knights of Stained Greaves once you activate your newly set The Phantom Knights of Shade Brigandine.

From there you can make Raider's Knight, triggering The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche to pop a card on the field before turning it into The Phantom Knights of Break Sword. Then, use The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots to destroy another opposing card, and when The Phantom Knights of Silent Boots dies, bring back more Phantom Knights to keep going!

And that's just one isolated thing you can do with The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche. Have another Phantom Knight you can put on the field? Get ready to go off with some insane combos. Want to stop your opponent flat? You can easily end with two Phantom Knights' Fog Blade shutting down multiple cards your opponent was relying on.

But even beyond the grave, The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche is useful because, well, it comes back. Phantom Knights' Fog Blade and Phantom Knights' Wing both revive The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche for life after death, making Phantom Knights resilient and powerful in the late game.

All Dark? No Problem

One thing I really liked about Phantom Knights is that they're all Dark monsters. It's by far my favorite attribute, and because I'm me and get way too much joy out of doing weird things, I wanted to lean into that for today's build and play Lair of Darkness.

Lair of Darkness a strange card because the main use for it doesn't garner any advantage of card economy; you're just turning all the monsters on the field Dark. That's neat, but by itself, it doesn't do much. That's where Super Polymerization and Zero-Day Blaster come in.

Super Polymerization might come across as an obvious choice when you're building with Lair of Darkness, but Zero-Day Blaster? It's probably the cheekiest card out there, effectively acting as another copy of Super Polymerization. It clears your opponent's biggest threats for a low price.

Because Lair of Darkness turns everything Dark and lets you tribute your opponent's monsters, any Link they summon turns into a bomb that will destroy whatever else they have. Sure, it's not the exact same as Super Polymerization, but it nukes your opponent's board and sets you up for your own turn to follow p.

Did you really think I was going to do a conventional Phantom Knights deck? You fool.

I don't think I need to tell you how easy it is to make The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche or how paramount it is to your success. It's ridiculously easy to summon with virtually any combination of Phantom Knights and Warrior support cards. Yes, even without Lair of Darkness.

Sure, it's a little bit more work if you HAVE to go through Isolde, Two Tales of the Noble Knights, backing your way into The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche via Barricadeborg Blocker and Linkuriboh, but there are dozens of ways to make it happen. If you know me at all, you'll know I'm not satisfied with only making The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche combos.

And yeah, I'm in love with Zero-Day Blaster to completely demolish your opponent beyond a shadow of a doubt. I wanted to go a step further and ensure you could see it on Turn 1 using cards that are largely baked into the cake already.

Here's the easiest way to explain the combo, as long as you have Lair of Darkness

Then again, it is a bit easier to simply draw Zero-Day Blaster, but who am I to criticize cool combos?

The Gift That Keeps On Giving

The biggest takeaway from Phantom Knights is their insane setup and recursion abilities. The deck isn't perfect by any means, but constantly reviving things from the graveyard and searching new Phantom Knight cards isn't something to scoff at.

Sure, the deck isn't perfect and you'll have to play around the banishing drawback of Phantom Knights' Fog Blade, but that's so negligible in the grand scheme of things I'm not even counting it as a real drawback. The only Phantom Knight that you don't want to banish is The Phantom Knights of Rusty Bardiche, and hopefully that won't cramp your style much.

Just remember: beat your opponents before they beat you.
