I'm not sure exactly when I became a green/white fan. I think it was somewhere around the original Ravnica, when the cool monsters of the Selesnya Conclave just got me. I've always loved tokens, but I also found it interesting that green/white's niche was getting big dopey creatures. The removal was almost non-existent, but the bodies were so impressively sized that maybe that was good enough. And it often was! Anyone who was playing back then could testify to the solidity of good ol' Watchwolf.

I wasn't sure which Planeswalker would pair well with this idea until I saw Ajani Unyielding—he was bland, yet powerful enough, to make it work.

The Game Plan

Play a monster at pretty much every spot on the curve, and attack with them. Because our creature quality is so high, we really don't need much more than that to put things in our favor. Our deck is capable of playing 2-power creatures at 1 mana, 3-power creatures at 2 mana, and so forth. We can apply the beatdown quickly and with resilient, beefy creatures. If that turns out not be good enough, we have a few choice tricks—Guided Strike, Selesnya Charm, Rebuff the Wicked, and Prismatic Strands—to ensure that we get our way. Armadillo Cloak and Elephant Guide can add even more fat with some bonuses as well.

I hate to call our creatures stupid. That would be rude, and some of these are my all time favorites. But they don't contribute much to our cause that isn't attacking and blocking, so remember to get into the red zone early and often with them. Again, there won't be many occasions where our board is outclassed.

Our removal is not plentiful… ok, let me rephrase that. We have exactly one definite removal spell—Stasis Snare. So be very judicious about its application. But we also have Ajani Unyielding itself, whose minus ability will be very useful. And one of our rares can sometimes be a removal spell, while Selesnya Charm acts as a very conditional kill spell.

The Rares

I've harped on before about my dislike of hexproof as a mechanic, but at least Fleecemane Lion makes us earn it. It's hard to get more efficient than the aforementioned Watchwolf stats, and really the only problem with its monstrous ability is we might have other things we want to play on 5 mana. If we do get it monstrous, it'll be extremely difficult to stop. Fleecemane Lion is a bonafide tank.

Continuing the tradition of undercosted fat, I knew I had to get the Loxodon Smiter in here. Fun fact: the last time I played in a Standard tournament, I was battling with both Fleecemane Lion and the Loxodon Smiter. I remember joyfully watching Jackson Cunningham (brother of GOAT Magic writer Jeff) almost win the Pro Tour with a similar Selesnya coalition, only to be stopped in the finals by the evil Sphinx's Revelation. Well, Sphinx's Revelation isn't legal in this project and I expect Loxodon Smiter to take us to the moon.

Nostalgia Alert! Still one of my favorite card arts in all of Magic. And back in the day, Mystic Enforcer was to be feared. Unfortunately, one of the bitter ironies of green/white is it usually packs very few ways to get to threshold short of our stuff dying. Which meant that Mystic Enforcer spent most of its competitive days as a splashed threat in decks that largely featured blue or black. Because I desperately wanted to play this, we've got the spicy Gather the Pack to get us a good chunk of the way there. Remember that unlike most of our other creatures, we're not generally interested in playing this on turn 4 when threshold is unlikely. Since the art on it is so nice, we want this to bat cleanup, and be the last thing our opponent ever sees.

An incredibly powerful, flexible spell! We'll almost always be choosing the fight and +1/+1 counter modes since our deck is extremely light on removal, but the other modes can be back breaking in the right scenarios. At only 2 mana and at instant speed, the Dromoka's Command here is one of our most powerful cards.

Unsung Hero

Planar Chaos was a super interesting design experiment. On one hand, there were certain cards that were big breaks. Damnation probably shouldn't have been made, for example—that effect at that cost with no restrictions or caveats was a very white ability, and has remained so ever since, making Damnation a very powerful (and expensive) aberration. Ok, lesson learned.

But there were a few cards that made a lot of sense when they got slotted over. Prodigal Pyromancer is a fine example. Blue could already do everything under the sun and red is supposed to be the color of direct damage. Almost too intuitive!

Hedge Troll is another great example. Sedge Troll is more notable these days because of its viability in Old School. But ever since the very early days of Magic it's been pretty clear that Trolls should be green. And making it a very reasonable, efficient creature is exactly what green/white wants to be doing. Although it may not look the most fearsome at first glance, let me assure you that a 3/3 for 3 that regenerates cheaply is plenty terrifying.
