The World Championship is still relatively fresh in players' minds, and over half the field in that event was playing Alrund's Epiphany. The winning deck and three of the Top 4 players in the event were playing Alrund's Epiphany. I did not do well in the tournament, but I also chose to play Mono-Green Aggro rather than an Epiphany deck. Now I am fully on board the Epiphany train, and have played Izzed Epiphany in my last two events.

Is Izzet Epiphany, or some variation of it, the best deck in Standard? The answer isn't clear and obvious, though I'm leaning toward yes. Regardless of the answer, its mere existence is currently pushing many decks out of the format. Midrange strategies that aren't very aggressive basically don't exist right now outside of casual play. These decks just fold to the power of Alrund's Epiphany copied with Galvanic Iteration.

Remember, Alrund's Epiphany was an important card in Standard before Galvanic Iteration came along. Now, you can get two or even ithree extra turns by casting Galvanic Iteration and flashing it back, followed by casting Alrund's Epiphany. Like Splinter Twin, it's a two-card combo that almost always wins the game. Yes, it costs at least eight mana to pull off, but there are plenty of ways to ramp in Standard.

While I've found Alrund's Epiphany decks to be fun to play, they're not fun to play against. I think at some point players will get sick enough of the existence of Alrund's Epiphany in Standard, that it will be banned. With Innistrad Crimson Vow coming up, WotC has declined to make changes to Standard until the new set is released. Over the past few years taking extra turns has been a major focus in Standard and even Historic. Hopefully if WotC continues printing ways to take extra turns they do so a bit more carefully.

For now, Alrund's Epiphany is a part of Standard, and you should be playing it. There are many ways you can go about building an Izzet deck right now. You can splash an additional color like black for Duress and removal spells, but I personally prefer the straightforward two-color Izzet decks. Then there is also the decision of whether you want to play the Dragon-based Izzet deck, or the combo-based version.

Dragons or No Dragons, that Is the Question

Smoldering Egg and Goldspan Dragon can be extremely powerful in Izzet decks, as we have already seen in the hands of Yuta Takahashi when he won Worlds. They also play well as the only creatures in your deck, because you need to fill the rest of your deck with noncreature spells to make them at their best. This is especially true in the case of Smoldering Egg.

The creatures do come at a cost though. You have to fill up eight slots in your deck with them, and that likely means you aren't as focused on Alrund's Epiphany. Yuta's deck doesn't not play Galvanic Iteration, and only runs three copies of Alrund's Epiphany. You can still play Epiphany, but it isn't necessarily your primary game plan, as you mostly want to be casting it once a Dragon is already on the battlefield. This is a deck that can succeed even if it never draws Alrund's Epiphany.

However, by playing creatures you open the door to creature removal dealing with your creatures. In Mono-Green for instance, there are sideboard options like Tangletrap as cheap and efficient ways to deal with a Dragon. Without the Dragons, Alrund's Epiphany isn't as scary as there isn't anything to back it up. At Worlds very few players were prepared for the Dragons themselves, but now we are seeing more cards like Tangletrap in players' sideboards, and for good reason. There are other Dragon-based strategies in the format, which makes it even more appealing to play good answers to them.

This is why I personally prefer the more combo-based version of Izzet, also known as Izzet Turns. By playing a deck without creatures you are able to make your opponents' removal spells basically useless, at least in game one. This is a classic way for a control or combo deck to get an edge on aggro decks. Sure, you can kill the Birds from Alrund's Epiphany sometimes, but that's not impressive.

This is the deck I currently recommend going into this weekend:

Play four copies of Unexpected Windfall. This is a major innovation to the deck that happened at Worlds, and has stuck since then. Unexpected Windfall allows you to get ahead on mana and combo off much faster, while also filtering through your deck. Notice that this build is very focused on making Galvanic Iteration as strong as possible. This is why I am playing Behold the Multiverse over Memory Deluge. Behold might not be the better card, but you can copy it with Galvanic Iteration.

Sideboard Guide

Vs. Mono-Green

+2 Lier, Disciple of the Drowned
+3 Burning Hands
+1 Cyclone Summoner

-1 Thundering Rebuke
-2 Behold the Multiverse
-1 Galvanic Iteration
-1 Divide by Zero
-1 Battle of Frost and Fire

This is a very close matchup. After sideboarding you become much more of a control deck focused around Lier, Disciple of the Drowned.

This is tech I picked up from my friend Corey Baumeister. While I'm still not convinced Lier, Disciple of the Drowned should be in the maindeck, it does really good work after sideboarding against Mono-Green once they take out their removal. The biggest thing is that you can't really flood out, as once you cast Lier it normally just wins you the game right away. Battle of Frost and Fire is great game one, but not as much after sideboarding, especially if the Mono-Green player has access to Toski, Bearer of Secrets. Don't be afraid to bounce your own Cyclone Summoner with Fading Hope—this has been an important play in many of my own games. Always be aware of the presence of Snakeskin Veil.

Vs. Mono-White

+1 Cinderclasm
+1 Burning Hands
+2 Lier, Disciple of the Drowned
+2 Goldspan Dragon

-3 Galvanic Iteration
-1 Alrund's Epiphany
-2 Behold the Multiverse

This is the plan I'm currently trying against Mono-White. Basically, I have found the combo of Galvanic Iteration plus Alrund's Epiphany quite difficult to set up after sideboarding. With cards like Elite Spellbinder to disrupt you, it becomes a hard plan to rely on. This is a tricky matchup because of how fast the white deck is, but I have found the creatures to be very effective after sideboarding. If you want to make the matchup better just add more copies of Cinderclasm, but I'm ok with just the one copy right now.

Vs. Izzet Epiphany

+3 Malevolent Hermit
+2 Goldspan Dragon
+2 Lier, Disciple of the Drowned

-2 Battle of Frost and Fire
-2 Fading Hope
-1 Thundering Rebuke
-1 Cathartic Pyre
-1 Prismari Command

Sideboarding here is going to be a bit list-dependent. For instance, do you want Demon Bolt? The answer is yes if the opponent is bringing in creatures. Malevolent Hermit is nice, but sometimes you want to wait until turn three to cast it to play around Spikefield Hazard a little bit.

The way the decklist is configured we don't have a ton for this matchup, because we are focused on making sure we are ahead against aggro. That being said I haven't found a way to get a huge edge, beyond playing the games as well as you can. Remember you can Galvanic Iteration a Divide by Zero to essentially double-counter two copies of Alrund's Epiphany. Trying to combo on your turn while the opponent has mana untapped is dangerous, because they can answer your Alrund's and then go for it themselves a lot of the time.

Vs. Izzet Dragons

+3 Malevolent Hermit
+2 Goldspan Dragon
+1 Lier, Disciple of the Drowned

-2 Battle of Frost and Fire
-2 Fading Hope
-1 Cathartic Pyre
-1 Prismari Command

This is similar to against Izzet Epiphany, but you have the late game advantage. Your goal is to stop Smoldering Egg and Goldspan Dragon while getting ahead on mana. Take your time, and eventually you will be able to set up a good Alrund's Epiphany turn. Personally, I feel ahead in this matchup. Your 4-damage removal spells should be enough to keep the Dragons in check.

Vs. Temur Midrange

+2 Goldspan Dragon
+2 Lier, Disciple of the Drowned
+2 Burning Hands

-2 Behold the Multiverse
-2 Battle of Frost and Fire
-1 Galvanic Iteration
-1 Divide by Zero

I prefer the creatures to Battle of Frost and Fire here because they can't be countered by Negate. Temur will likely have multiple counterspells in their deck after sideboarding which makes it difficult to know when you can try to resolve a threat. They pretty much always take out their creature removal, outside of Shatterskull Smashing. Dealing with Magda, Brazen Outlaw immediately is very important, though fortunately we have lots of removal to kill it, including Spikefield Hazard.
