Angrath, Captain of Chaos seems like a pretty simple Minotaur. He's interested in one thing and one thing only—giving our troops menace. Honestly, in this project I actually enjoy the Planeswalker passive abilities, because they help focus the themes and provide some direction.

So. Menace. When I first think about menace, I just think about piling on damage. Which is fine and rad. But it's Level 1 stuff and ultimately less interesting than other options. It's more interesting and flavorful to think about creatures that do stuff when they connect, so once they get that menace bonus, they'll be able to connect more often.

The Game Plan

Get creatures with menace in play, attack with them, and profit. We're not reinventing the wheel here. Angrath, Captain of Chaos is straightforward, so our plan will be as well. We want to be attacking frequently. Menace doesn't do anything for blocking, so aggression is the name of the game. To that end, Angrath, Captain of Chaos, Nemesis Mask, and Chitinous Cloak are very important to enable our attacks. Frillscare Mentor can enable most of our troops and provide some much-needed size boosts as well. Rix Maadi Guildmage and Close Quarters help punish those brave souls who try to block anyway.

Once we get menacing, we have several creatures we're looking to connect with. Slavering Nulls harasses the opponent's hand, Azra Oddsmaker can put us ahead on cards, Lavacore Elemental gets to keep on existing, and last but certainly not least Spark Mage gets to poke some stuff.

Our removal here is pretty good! Terminate is one of the best to ever do it, and Angrath's Rampage can be extremely powerful and flavorful. Final Reward and Fiery Intervention are a bit on the expensive and clunky side, but they're powerful effects that provide a bit of versatility as well. Heartfire isn't elite, but it's cheap and can help make sure the creatures that did get blocked still get to do something useful. It was probably unlikely the Spark Mage was going to do much if it got blocked—now it's contributing in other ways.

Because our creatures aren't the biggest or best, they might be dying a lot once the opponent scrapes together enough blockers, and we're prepared to refresh the troops with Soul Salvage, Recover, and Garna, the Bloodflame. This deck doesn't do a great job of getting ahead on cards, so those raise dead effects will hopefully fill in the gaps there.

The Rares

(Remember, because this Planeswalker is uncommon we get 5 rares instead of 4)

Those of you who played a lot of Standard or Historic recently probably remember this fella. It's great if we can land it early or if we have enace enablers to allow it to connect more reliably. Wears the Fists of the Demigod comfortably. It combines threat with removal. We'd love to see this every game, more specifically on Turn 2.

Maybe the closest we'll get to a Menace Lord. Its effect is very powerful, and can ensure our smallish creatures can either trade with at least something, or even get 2-for-1s reliably. Getting that strong an effect on a 2-mana package without really sacrificing much on the body of the creature is excellent. The rare we're hoping to see most every game, since it does the best job at facilitating our game plan.

A 6-Power trampler is likely to connect, but menace makes it even more certain. Mind Rot is a great way to add insult to injury, and our raise dead effects can set us up for an encore performance.

I really can't explain why, but I've always loved this card. I don't recall ever getting it in a killer draft deck. I've never played it in a Standard deck. I'm not sure if I've ever actually cast or attacked with it! I just know I like it, and we'd love to give this legend some menace to repeatedly request some sacrifices. The wording on its ability is super weird, and hopefully we'll be explaining it as it resolves several times in a game.

The rare dragons from Dragons of Tarkir were all pretty rad, and they also got totally overshadowed by the Dragonlords from that set. Boltwing Marauder lets us give some oomph to the menace troops, and gives us our biggest creature on an evasive body as well. I've always liked the card and wanted to play it, and this seemed like a fine home.

Unsung Hero

I never saw this card before I did research for this project, but what a rad card! This deck keeps its curve fairly low, so odds are strong we might want to pitch one for the chance at some gas. We're very interested in making sure this creature gets menace, and when we do, definitely consider pitching a meaningless card just to incentivize our opponents to block it. Putting the opponent to the test as to whether or not to allow a bunch of damage or let us get a couple cards is a great position to be in.
