I wish we knew a little more about Arlinn. I seem to recall most of the Shadows Over Innistrad lore focused on Jace stumbling upon the drama surrounding Sorin and Nahiri. This kinda left Arlinn the odd wolf (wolf-lady?) out.

Her character seems super interesting, and I'm grateful that in recent sets, the newer Planeswalkers tend to get a lot of shine in the stories. I hope we see more of her. In the meantime however, the Arlinn we got from War of the Spark does point us in a very specific, none-too-subtle direction.

That's right, we're playing Wolves! And while it may be a little strange that Wolves have only really been a supported creature type for a decade, WotC has more than made up for lost time and provided lots of options for us. The wolfpack is full! No lone wolves here.

Here's what we got (please keep the howling to a minimum until the end):

The Game Plan

This is a very straightforward tribal deck. We're trying to play Wolves, we don't really stop playing them, and we attack through the opponent's weaker creatures.

One thing that's important to note is that some of our best threats are at 4 or 5 mana. This makes some of our early drops very important. If we can establish a presence early and maybe even apply some pressure, our plays start to get very impressive starting turn 4 or later. Also make sure to try to keep hands with enough lands; this deck ends up being just a bit higher up the curve than many others, so be sure to be mindful when staring at those 2-land hands.

The combat tricks are pretty interesting. Force of Will cousin Bounty of the Hunt is clunky and weird, but it can also dominate combats, since we can play it on no mana. Hunter's Insight has been written about before; its effect is still as insane. Keen Sense, Alpha Status, Raised by Wolves, and Wolfkin Bond are fantastic enhancements that can all take over a game. Yes, the card disadvantage might hurt if these end up shafting us on the wrong end of some 2-for-1s, but their impact on games is so substantial that the risks are worth it. Moonlight Hunt and Hunt the Weak aren't the best removal, but we're playing Mono Green here. Sometimes you need to make the best of what ya got.

The Rares

(Remember, because this Planeswalker is Uncommon we get 5 Rares instead of the normal 4.)

The rate here is not great, unlike lots of our other monsters. However, the ability can be extremely potent against most other decks in the field, acting as a magnet for removal that will replace itself as well as drawing fire from some of our more valuable targets. And if the opponent neglects to remove it, maybe we'll be able to get a decent sized pack of wolves for our trouble for the low, low cost of zero mana! Surprisingly strong.

This does have flash, but the value of this one-wolf army is anything but sneaky. As its recent tour of duty in Standard showed, the Ambusher can take over games all by itself. In fact, we won't want to play too many spells on our main phase after we land this. That might make some of the games a bit boring, but the power level here is too high to ignore. When playing a Tribal deck, always look for the Lords!

When this card was in Standard, I thought it would end up being a contender. I was incorrect. As a result, I've got a...couple of them sitting around in the old bulk box, and this seems like a great home for (sadly only) one of them. For 5 mana, we get 12 power and toughness across 2 bodies, and that is absurd. As long as it's not a wolfpack of 1, the Silverheart here will get out of hand immediately.

I played against one of these in a draft, and bounced the creature it was attached to in order to try and get ahead on cards. Imagine my surprise when I then actually read the card and determined that the trigger happens upon the Aura's death, not the Enchanted Creature as per the usual. My horrible loss became this deck's gain, as I realized that Arlinn just had to have this. For 4 mana, we're getting an extremely solid package that offers a nice buff and provides multiple bodies once it's dealt with. Even in the worst case scenario where our enchanted creature gets Pacified or some such, our ability to Naturalize it and then get extra bodies in a pinch is very useful.

The supercharged version of Bounty of the Hunt. Sure, it costs way more mana, but spreading that much damage around will either win the game or obliterate a combat step in our favor. It's not unfair to expect this to be the last spell cast in a game.

Unsung Hero

I wouldn't be surprised if most folks out there haven't played this card. An Uncommon only from Conspiracy, this wasn't one of the most exciting cards from that set, and didn't mesh particularly well with its brethren. Unfortunately for us, it costs 4 mana, which means we're unlikely to play it on the curve and it's telegraphed somewhat easily. If we resolve it, however (with the Morbid condition met), it is an absolute bomb. 4 mana for 3 2/2s at instant speed is extremely powerful, and I would consider us far ahead if we get to resolve this card in a game where we meet the Morbid condition.
