This past month I've been fully invested in playing Historic, with one primary goal in mind: doing well in the Mythic Invitational. Since Historic has never been a format played on a stage quite like the Mythic Invitational—which is starting today—the format has been wide open leading up to the event. I want to go over not only the actual deck I chose, but how I, and the people I tested with reached the conclusion to play Sultai Midrange for this event.

Condensing Archetypes

A couple weeks ago, there were about 20 different decks in Historic I wanted to explore for this event. Being a new format for high level play has meant there is a ton of ground to cover. One of my main goals when playing an event is trying to anticipate the metagame. In order to do this, I tried figuring out what decks are rising in popularity, and which ones are a little underpowered.

Let's take a look at the top three strategies in Historic right now.

Goblins

In my testing, I determined Goblins to be the best deck in the format from a power level perspective. The degenerate things the deck can do with Muxus, Goblin Grandee or a classic "flood the board with red creatures" plan are very powerful. Being able to win as early as turn three (and more often on turn four) with Muxus, Goblin Grandee is faster than essentially every deck in the format. Beyond this, this is the deck I both played against the most on Arena, and had the worst win percentage playing against in my testing. I saw many people streaming the deck as well.

This will be the most popular strategy at the Mythic Invitational. Let's take a look at Kanister's decklist for this event:

This version splashes black for Thoughtseize. Thoughtseize is a generically good card, allowing you to clear out disruptive cards the opponent might have in their hand. The splash doesn't cost you much, as there aren't many black lands needed to add to the deck, and they almost all come into play untapped. I like this addition because of the low cost and high upside, but at the same time the straight mono-red version of Goblins is the more popular one right now. The only card that is sacrificed here is Forgotten Cave.

You may think if Goblins is so good, why didn't I choose to play it? I personally prefer to be the one trying to attack the top deck, rather than playing it myself. This is the case for the Mythic Invitational. My hope is many other players reach the same conclusion and play Goblins, which would allow me to then try to find something that can beat it. I was also scared of the huge target it has—expect a lot of players to have cards like Witch's Vengeance in their sideboard.

Jund Sacrifice

Jund Sacrifice is the third most popular deck in the Mythic Invitational. We've seen it do really well in Standard and Historic. This is another tier 1 strategy. Similar to Goblins, I don't like running this deck that much, and don't think it plays to my strengths as a player.

Looking at the metagame for the Mythic Invitational, we see the format has condensed significantly, and now the top three strategies make up a huge amount of the tournament field. I agree with players making this a Collected Company deck, as most players have elected.

Sultai Midrange

Alright, now let's talk about the deck I've chosen for the tournament: Sultai Midrange. This is the second most popular deck in the format, but there are a variety of different ways you can build it. Over the last few years, I've found myself becoming more of a midrange player, so this is the sort of strategy I'm most comfortable playing. Since this is a midrange deck, it can be tuned to target a given metagame, which is what my version of the deck does:

Many of the inclusions are typical of other Sultai decklists, but at the same time this is also a unique take on this strategy. It is easy to lump Sultai decks together, but by changing some numbers and moving cards in and out of the sideboard, you can end up with very different versions of the deck.

Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, Nissa, Who Shakes the World, and Hydroid Krasis. After sideboard, Shark Typhoon and Elder Gargaroth.

These are the ways you take over the late game, or even out-grind a control deck. Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is one of the best cards in the format, and right now Sultai is the deck that can best use Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath. The nice thing about these win conditions is you often only need one of them to close out a game. This means you don't need to devote a ton of slots to these cards, and the rest of your deck can be dedicated toward disrupting what the opponent is doing.

The other advantage to playing these sorts of threats is some of them draw cards like Shark Typhoon, Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Hydroid Krasis. That means even if the opponent deals with your threat, you're still likely up cards in the exchange, and perhaps have dug into another win condition this way.

Nissa, Who Shakes the World is in a category of its own. Most players are already aware of the power level of the one-two punch that is Nissa, Who Shakes the World and Hydroid Krasis. With a Nissa, Who Shakes the World in play, you usually have mana to cast all your spells, so most games where you get to untap with Nissa, Who Shakes the World will result in a win. Making your lands into creatures can also be a pretty fast clock.

The other really nice part about Nissa, Who Shakes the World in this deck is how well she plays with all the two-mana interactive spells in the deck. Being able to tap five lands for Nissa, Who Shakes the World, and then untap a land to have a removal or protection spell at the ready is a really big deal.

Ramp

Some players categorize this as a ramp deck because it plays Growth Spiral and Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, but I don't see it that way. Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Growth Spiral are powerful cards. The deck wants to cast Nissa, Who Shakes the World on turn four, and that's what these cards allow you to do. This is different from a ramp deck trying to top out with cards like Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon though, so the ramp name can be deceiving.

Interaction

The rest of our spells are interactive, and try to disrupt what the opponent is doing. While technically Goblins can splash Thoughtseize, I see Sultai as the deck that can best use the discard spell. You want to have cheap cards filling up the graveyard and enable a quick Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath coming out of the graveyard. Thoughtseize is never going to be dead in a matchup, unlike some of the other removal and countermagic that is more matchup-specific. The worst place for Thoughtseize is against Mono-Red Burn, but that deck isn't super popular at the moment.

The most unusual part about my decklist are the four copies of Aether Gust in the maindeck. Many Sultai decks don't play Aether Gust main at all, so this should definitely stand out. A healthy format would force Aether Gust to be a sideboard card, but right now the color pie happens to be skewed toward red and green. Since I kept losing to Goblins in testing, I continued to add Aether Gust, as they're also good against Company decks and other Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath strategies. The danger is the card can be completely dead in some matchups, so this is definitely a gamble.

Against Goblins, you want to be able to both deal with the small creatures, and be aware at all times of a potential Muxus, Goblin Grandee coming down. The countermagic and Aether Gust are what you want to answer the powerful six-mana Goblin. At the same time, mass sweepers like Languish getting rid of all Goblins are important. The main reason I'm playing two Languish and only one Extinction Event is the Goblins matchup. This is the classic mix of removal, counters and hand disruption you often find in a midrange strategy.

28 Lands

This is a lot, but missing land drops also feels terrible. I'm very happy to have six cycle lands in the deck to help prevent flooding a little. Also, Castle Locthwain was a late addition to the deck, but for a low cost has been great in the slower games. Since you're playing so many lands you want some of them to give you an additional effect. Fabled Passage is important to help fuel your Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath.

The Sideboard

You need to have cards that come in for control matchups, and when Aether Gust is a dead card game one. Shark Typhoon allows for that sort of flexibility. A deck like Mono-Blue Tempo is really rough game one, which is a sacrifice you'll be okay making with such a strong sideboard card for the matchup. You will see the cards are mostly split between control and aggro.

Cry of the Carnarium is great vs. the sacrifice decks, while on the flipside Witch's Vengeance is the card you want against Goblins, so I did end up going with the split there. Since Sacrifice and Goblins are both such huge parts of the metagame, it's worth having cards to specifically target those decks. There's only one Grafdigger's Cage, because this is an open decklist event. I'm okay if players board in their Reclamation Sage to target my lone copy of Grafdigger's Cage. It shuts off your own Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, but at the same time can be a scary one-of the opponent has to be aware of.

In the end, I believe this is a good version of Sultai, and am happy with the deck choice. With that said, it doesn't have a huge edge in any matchup, so you do need to fight for all your wins. Good luck to all the Sultai gamers out there!
