It's the second week of Spooktober and we have thankfully stumbled out of Zombieland in one piece (more or less). However we aren't in the clear just yet!

I've noticed that we're having a strong of bad luck lately. Ever since we've broken that mirror, crossed a black cat, walked under a ladder, and opened an umbrella inside it's been a bit rough. Things just haven't been going our way. It's like we've been cursed….

One year ago I decided to brew a Curses deck with Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge at the helm. She was originally chosen due to her color identity and flavor (after all, how cool is having a Witch for a commander), however, her ability did not scream Curses. While the deck was incredibly flavorful, the functionality felt lacking. If I returned to the project, I wanted to tackle it at a new angle.

While Grixis has access to some of the Magic's best Curses, none of the legendaries felt right. All of them leaned in different directions but none pointed toward enchantments. It never occurred to me to stray from Grixis, until chat recommended Esper to me. White is very much lacking in the Curse department, however, it does give us access to some pretty potent spells and maybe even a few Curse-like enchantments as well. But who would dare lead such a daunting deck?

Introducing one of my favorite, recently printed legendaries: Alela, Artful Provocateur. This creature is a powerhouse token generator that is triggered by casting artifacts or enchantments and just so happens to be the perfect leader for this enchantment-heavy theme deck. It also doesn't hurt that Alela by nature is a scheming Faerie, bent on mischief in its grandest forms. And what's more grand than cursing those who stand in our way?

The primary theme for this build is to inconvenience our opponents with our Auras and enchantments while swinging at them with our tokens from high in the sky. So let's pull out our book of black magic, think unhappy thoughts, and get to cursing.

Curses

Curses are some of the most interesting and flavorful enchantments ever printed in Magic. Regardless of their color identity, each Curse is meant to inflict some form of pain or annoyance on the enchanted player.

In the entirety of Magic, there have only been 29 curses printed. This deck runs a total of 14. That's an obscene amount of bad luck, right? How many mirrors did our opponents have to break for them to get so unlucky? The deck's most powerful curses are Cruel Reality, Overwhelming Splendor, Curse of Misfortunes, and Curse of Thirst. Each of these pieces has a huge impact on how we and our opponents play the game.

One fun interaction between two curses in this deck are Curse of Misfortunes and Curse of Thirst. Misfortunes is a fun Aura that allows us to tutor for a Curse and attach it to the enchanted player. While this may be putting all of our eggs in one basket, pairing it with Curse of Thirst allows us to deal major damage to that opponent without laying a single, spell-casting finger on them. Sometimes the slow burn plays are the most fun.

Our next hex just so happens to be one of white's most powerful control cards: Overwhelming Splendor. This enchantment is a card I absolutely hate to see on the battlefield… when it isn't under my control, at least. Not only does it shut down your opponent's abilities but it also turns their terrifying creatures into 1/1s with no abilities. When paired with Curse of Death's Hold it turns into a board wipe that never ends, unless they have some form of enchantment removal (more on that later).

Our final hindrance of a hex is Cruel Reality. When building this deck, chat and I quickly learned that we were going to have to get crafty with our removal. Cruel Reality is just one example of our craftiness. Not only does it serve as planeswalker and creature removal, but it has the potential of dealing 5 damage each upkeep. When it isn't removing, it is pinging for a nice chunk of damage, which definitely serves our grand scheme of annoyance.

Curses! It's Removal!

Esper has no shortage of removal. White has Path to Exile, black has Damnation, and blue has Pongify. At first, we were up to our gills with removal, however, we wanted to stay true to our theme. Thankfully there are ways we can add removal that is both synergistic and thematic: Humble cards. While these cards don't necessarily destroy their targets, they do hinder them to almost near defenselessness. Some would say we cursed them!

While Overwhelming Splendor is a mass Humble effect (for one specific player), cards like Frogify, Darksteel Mutation, Imprisoned in the Moon, Kasmina's Transmutation, and Reprobation work for single targets. Each of these enchantments serves as a way to curse our opponents' creatures while simultaneously generating tokens with Alela, Artful Provocateur. Giant Eldrazi turn into Frogs and Insects in the blink of an eye, leaving us free to do our hexing without fear of retaliation.

Re-curse-ion

Let's face it. Curses aren't an ironclad plan. Eventually they'll hit the yard after an opponent dies or a Krosan Grip resolves.

Thankfully, we run a few ways to get them back! One such way is Crystal Chimes. Simply sacrifice it to return all enchantments from the 'yard to your hand. Then we can recast our nastiest Curses on the remaining few alive.

While Sun Titan isn't an enchantment-specific form of recursion, this wonderful Giant allows us to return permanents with converted mana cost 3 or less to the battlefield when it enters the battlefield or attacks. A good portion of our enchantments and Humble cards definitely fall under this criteria, making it a powerful form of recursion.

Another way to recur our enchantments is Replenish. The beautiful thing about this card is that it immediately returns our enchantments to play! No need to count our mana, because Replenish has us covered.

Our final piece of recursion is probably one of the weirdest cards I have ever seen, and yet it is perfect for our Curses: Cleansing Meditation. This sorcery essentially allows us to rearrange our Curses as we see fit. Is Timmy starting to be more of a nuisance than Spike? We can easily fix this situation with a simple three-mana spell and a can-do attitude.

My New Favorite Card

I never knew this card existed until my fellow hexmages in chat shared it with me.

I present Divine Intervention. It may not be a Curse, but this enchantment will still torment the table. How? Well this enchantment ends the game in a draw. The threshold for triggering this card's ability is so low it can be considered comical.

How is this a curse, you may ask? Well, our opponents don't win, and neither do we. The game was all for naught. We set it up, play again, and cast this card the next game only to have it end in another draw. It reminds me of the Greek myth of Sisyphus: the man doomed to roll a boulder up a hill only for it to roll back down once it reaches the top for all of eternity. No one wins, no one loses, but man is it such a cool way to end a game. Feels very curse-like to me.

Tokens

So we've got the cursing part down. Controlling out opponents and their creatures through enchantments and Curses is only half the fun of this deck, however. We still need to deal some damage.

This is where our token generators come in. Sure, Alela, Artful Provocateur creates tokens every time we cast an artifact or an enchantment, however, we need other means of token generation otherwise we could be left defenseless if she ever goes back to the command zone.

Archon of Sun's Grace serves as an enchantment-specific Alela, Artful Provocateur, generating 2/2 Pegasus tokens when an enchantment enters the battlefield under our control. Thanks to the Achon, these tokens also have lifelink, which can help us not die to our next token generator: Bitterblossom.

This enchantment is definitely a pet card of mine that also serves as one of our key players in token generation. It is the epitome of a black card, using life as a resource to generate creatures when most needed.

Our final piece is an Enchantress staple: Sigil of the Empty Throne. For every enchantment we cast we create a 4/4 Angel token, and it just so happens to be that we run 36 enchantments in this list. That's a lot of Angels. There is strength in numbers, and thanks to these key pieces and Alela, Artful Provocateur, we definitely have the numbers.

Final Thoughts

I absolutely adore the concept of Curses. To this day they remain one of my favorite card types in the history of Magic, and yet, we don't see a lot of Curse decks floating around. This is due in part to the fact that some Curses flourish more in formats with a smaller deck size.

Despite this, we were able to create a deck that still maintained the flavor and functionality of Curses in weaker colors (Red just has some really neat curses). Finding the sweet spot between flavor and functionality proved to be difficult. The deck originally held cards like Curse of the Bloody Tome, Path to Exile, Curse of Inertia, and Island Sanctuary. All of these pieces are powerful in their own right, but were ultimately cut due to either a need for space or theme. By the time all the lands were completely added, the deck ran a total of 158 cards. Cuts were incredibly challenging, and yet the outcome was something incredibly fun.

When I revisited the idea of toying with Curses in Commander, I was nervous that I would have a string of bad luck. It turns out, instead, to have been a lucky endeavor.
