I know what you're thinking… CHASE IS BUILDING BOROS?!

That's right you guys, and no, the world isn't ending! Lorehold is taking me to school for this week's article. Our commander in question? Velomachus Lorehold!

Spoiled by WotC themselves, Velomachus Lorehold takes a step away from the traditional Boros archetype and allows us to explore white-red in an exciting new way. While we are still interested in combat, Velomachus Lorehold allows us to dip our toes into the world of instants and sorceries, for free (and by "free" I mean we need to cast our seven-mana commander and then immediately attack with him). Our goal? Cast cool things for free and kill our opponents with a nasty 5/5 Dragon.

Move over Firesong and Sunspeaker! Boros has a new noncreature spell commander to gush over!

Free Spells

What initially drew me to Velomachus Lorehold was the fact that we can look at the top seven cards of our library to cast any instant or sorcery for free (so long as the converted mana cost is equal to or less than Velomachus' power).

Let's be honest: that is insane. Boros has always lacked card advantage, so getting to look at a full hand's worth of cards and cast something for free is astonishing! Did I mention that we can do this instantly? Velomachus Lorehold has haste, y'all!

So now that we've covered his ability, what exactly are we going to cast with it?

Out of our collected pool of 31 instants and sorceries, we only run two that cannot be cast for free with our commander: Approach of the Second Sun and Blasphemous Act. This leaves us with 29 spells at our fingertips!

Covering all 29 would definitely be an exhausting task, so let's cover the basics, starting with board wipes. You'd be surprised at how many board wipes fit under our commander's threshold. Slash the Ranks, Single Combat, and Tragic Arrogance are known to take the wind out of everyone's sails. It's these kinds of selective board wipes that will impact us the least and hurt our opponents the most. Of course we also have to run single-target forms of removal such as Swords to Plowshares, Generous Gift, Path to Exile, and Chaos Warp. Lordy, that's a mouthful!

Another maximum-value spell is Disrupt Decorum. In a deck that is mostly based around instants and sorceries, we need all the protection we can get. We only have so many creatures to spare, so it definitely helps to make your opponents attack one another. Speaking of protection, we also run more defensive cards such as Boros Charm, Dawn Charm, Deflecting Palm, Deflecting Swat, and Teferi's Protection.

Lastly, let's talk about card draw. Every time I build around Boros, the first question is how I'm going to keep my hand full. Our two strongest forms of card draw in this list are Valakut Awakening and Heartwarming Redemption. Both of these spells allow us to discard our hand and draw that many cards plus one. These miniature versions of Wheel of Fortune are spectacular at refilling empty hands (with the added bonus of life gain thanks to Redemption)!

Our final piece of card draw is the newly spoiled Thrilling Discovery. Not only can we gain some life with this, but we are able to pitch some bad cards in order to draw three! While there will always be some caveats with card draw in white (all of these cards involve us discarding our hand), we can still find ways to replenish after some heavy-handed spellcasting.

Extra Combat

Velomachus Lorehold ability triggers on attacks. The more we attack, the more spells we can cast for free.

It should also be noted that there is a caveat when it comes to these extra combat spells. Cards like Waves of Aggression and Seize the Day won't work when we cast them with Velomachus Lorehold ability—they need to be cast during the main phase in order for an additional combat step to occur.

Now I know what you're thinking."Why run them, Chase?"

Well, extra combat steps are still nice, even if we have to pay for them. It should also be noted that Waves of Aggression has retrace and Seize the Day has flashback, meaning we can cast both from the graveyard. Two spells for the price of one!

However, this does not mean we don't run extra combat spells that work with Velomachus Lorehold ability. One such spell is World at War. This mouthful of a spell works with Velomachus Lorehold specifically because it says "After the first postcombat main phase." This key wording is what allows us to cast this spell for free with our Dragon. Another spell is Savage Beating, which allows us to untap and go to combat yet again!

We aren't done just yet. We still have more ways to gain extra combat steps. We're still playing Boros combat shenanigans, meaning we have to run Aurelia, the Warleader!

Aurelia is one of Boros' strongest generals, allowing us to have an additional combat phase after she attacks for the first time. This works beautifully in tandem with our commander.

Another creature that allows us to have more than one combat phase is Moraug, Fury of Akoum. With this Minotaur out, we need to plan our land drops carefully. Despite this, he is a powerhouse whether we drop lands or swing with him.

Our final extra combat creature just so happens to be a Dragon much like our commander: Scourge of the Throne!

Much like Aurelia, the Warleader, whenever he attacks for the first time that turn, we get an additional combat phase. However, it should be noted that this only triggers if we attack the opponent with the highest life total. What I love about Scourge is that he doesn't even need to make contact in order to trigger! How great is that?!

Our final form of extra combat phases happens to be a bit of a combo. Let's talk about Helm of the Host.

Infamous in both cEDH and casual alike, this artifact is notorious for creating infinite combat steps. I slotted it into this deck with two cards in mind: Velomahus Lorehold and Combat Celebrant. When equipped to our commander, we are able to get multiple free spell casts off the top of our library, which is straight fire on its own. However, when attached to Combat Celebrant, we are able to get infinite combat steps, making your turn become lethal! I mean, games have to end sometime, right?

Artifacts

While this deck focuses on instants and sorceries, we need some artifact support in order to thrive. While mana rocks make up a rather large portion of our heavy metal, we also run a few that have some other, deadlier uses.

When I began my stream around building Velomachus Lorehold, my chat said, "If this commander doesn't make Chase run Sunforger, then nothing will." Well, their wishes have been granted, because the first artifact we need to discuss is Sunforger.

To be fair, chat was right when they said Sunforger was made for this list. Plus it's also funny to think about a giant Dragon wielding a hammer! In this particular list we are able to snag 14 instants with our Sunforger. Need cards drawn? Sunforger has you! What about artifact or enchantment removal? Sunforger has you too! What can't Sunforger do?!

Next we have Pyromancer's Goggles, also known as one of my favorite cards ever! This beauty has won me many games in my Chandra tribal deck, and for good reason. This expensive mana rock is beautiful because if we use it to cast an instant or sorcery, we can copy it! While this doesn't really impact Velomachus Lorehold ability for us to cast things for free, I still find it to be a wonderful addition to the deck whenever we tap mana to cast things. Using it to cast Seize the Day gives us even more combat steps than if we cast it with our commander! That's just too good!

Our final, and probably most impactful artifact in this deck is Scroll Rack. I'll be the first to admit that this card gives me a bit of a headache whenever I read it. However, that doesn't make it any less powerful in this list! Our commander allows us to peak at the top seven cards from our library before allowing us to cast an instant or sorcery for free. However, there might be moments when we'd prefer to cast the spell in our hand for free rather than whatever's on top. Thankfully, Scroll Rack has our back! With this artifact we can exchange any number of cards from our hand for that number of cards on the top of our library. It essentially allows us to stack our deck.

Scroll Rack is also wonderful because it allows us to refresh our hands for possibly newer and better cards—and with our commander constantly removing the top seven, this is an easy and useful trick for us to pull!

Creatures

White and red are usually creature-dependent colors. Combat is often the name of the game. However, things are different with Velomachus Lorehold. We do want to swing, but most of the time we want to swing with our commander.

We may only run 14 creatures, but each creature serves a purpose in this list. Let's start out small with creatures who make creatures!

Monastery Mentor and Young Pyromancer are definite no-brainers for this deck. Every time we cast a noncreature spell we get a 1/1 token! We also play Keeper of the Accord which can make us tokens if our opponents control more creatures than us. The beauty of this Soldier is that it also helps us tutor for a basic Plains if our opponents control more lands than us! This Keeper is the perfect support package!

Speaking of support, let's talk more about card draw. Mangara, the Diplomat is one of white's newest answers to this problem. Much like Keeper of the Accord, Mangara's ability to draw us cards is entirely dependent on our opponents; however, in these colors any form of card draw is good card draw.

If we're playing white and red then we have to play Iroas, God of Victory and Gisela, Blade of Goldnight. These two pieces are absolute powerhouses, and also interact greatly with combat!

Let's start out with Iroas, God of Victory. This God gives the already-stacked Velomachus Lorehold menace and also prevents all damage dealt to him when he attacks. We want to protect our commander to the best of our abilities, especially because commander tax makes him incredibly expensive after a while. Next we have Gisela, Blade of Goldnight! She is the queen of combat, protecting our life total and our permanents as well. She also doubles the damage we deal to our opponents, which makes Velomachus Lorehold a terror in the air!

Lastly, let's talk about Etali, Primal Storm. She does not interact with Velomachus Lorehold much like the other creatures do, however, running extra value never hurts. She allows us to cast things from our opponent's decks for free. Like our commander, she very much likes free things, but prefers to steal from others. This can give us access to ramp, card draw, copy spells, and more! All we have to do is attack!

Out of all the articles I have written for TCGplayer, I have only ever written one article covering a Boros commander. Velomachus Lorehold makes #2.

To be completely honest, Boros has never been my favorite of the Guilds. From me thinking the colors reminded me of ketchup and mayo, to the lack of card advantage, I always had reasons to avoid it. No legendaries really spoke to me. However, with the spoilers of Lorehold during this preview season, I have begun to open up more to these condiments—I mean, colors!

Lorehold's interactions with noncreature spells, Spirit tokens, and the graveyard drew me in and helped me become accustomed to colors I once felt weren't my interests. It is because of Lorehold and Velomachus Lorehold that I am excited to see what comes in the future of white-red.
