Boros sucks. It lacks major card advantage, ramp, and card draw. It is without a doubt the worst color combo in Magic.

...That's what I used to think.

For far too long, Boros has been the butt of the joke, especially in Commander. But why? Most Guild colors tend to synergize with one another, and yet Boros always felt lacking in the synergy department. White is patient, calm, and peaceful. Red is brash, impulsive, and angry. The two don't seem to mix. There's a reason it's called an enemy color combo. However, within this duality lies the true strength of Boros: passion. This is expressed in so many Commander brews, from Brion Stoutarm to Aurelia, the Warleader. Boros evokes a feeling of righteousness and fury.

The color combo is known for a handful of incredibly powerful themes: tokens, extra combat steps, and even good old fashioned burn. As the Zendikar Rising previews began trickling their way out onto my Twitter feed, Boros was the last thing on my mind. Then I saw her: Akiri, Fearless Voyager.

I was immediately drawn in. She has card draw, repeatable protection, and an Equipment-centric theme. I was hooked. (Get it? Cause she's a line slinger…)

But how do we build Boros Equipment? Hell if I know. During my time brewing this, I was incredibly lost. I was line-slinging into uncharted territory, after all. However, a guaranteed safe place to get our footing is the Equipment.

And My Axe!

There are 276 Equipment cards printed in the entirety of Magic's lexicon. That's a lot of crap to carry, and a lot to sift through—and we don't even have a Bag of Holding to carry it all! So what do we pop in here to make our creatures nice and beefy? Well, cards like Bone Saw and Bonesplitter are an absolute must in an Equipment deck…

Hmmm...I DUNNO ABOUT THAT ONE CHIEF.

While those cards are great for the memes, we're better off running cards with a heftier CMC and equip cost than cards with cheap ones. It's true that we can get these cheaper equipment cards out much faster and earlier, but their abilities are incredibly lacking. We want to focus on the abilities of the Equipment (i.e. what they can do for us and what they can take from our opponents). Each Equipment in this list was agonized over—we had 130 cards before we even started to add lands. That said, there are a handful I want to specifically highlight. Boros lacks card advantage, right? What if we had a way to help combat this?

Actually, we have two ways! The first Equipment solution is Mask of Memory. Card draw has always been a hurdle for Boros. With this Mask, we essentially have a better version of Faithless Looting whenever the equipped creature deals combat damage. Akiri already does a great job at helping us with card draw; the Mask is just gravy. But what about ramp, another typical concern for Boros? Thanks to an Equipment, our worries are immediately put at ease. Sword of the Animist allows us to search for a basic upon attacks.

YOU HEARD ME! IT'S FREE REAL ESTATE!

So we have some Equipment to help us in some of our weaker areas, but what about our stronger areas? There are so many Equipment that help us slice and dice for huge amounts of damage, but which Equipment is right for us? I wanna break out the gnarliest, nastiest, wieldable pieces of metal we've ever seen for this list! And what's gnarlier than Quietus Spike?

Prepare your barf bags, friends, because it doesn't get easier from here! Halving life totals is definitely a choice, and one I am happy to make. Pair this with a Rogue's Passage for the saltiest of salty opponents.

BUT WAIT! THERE'S MORE!

So you got the Equipment out on the battlefield...and then the equip cost is just too much. Sometimes it happens. But what can you do? Time to whip out the hammer—specifically, the Hammer of Nazahn!

Indestructible and +2/+0 aside, this card is jaw-droppingly amazing. equip costs no longer factor into the equation. Equipment simply attach themselves upon entering the battlefield. You can't deny how badass that is, right? Imagine two swords just gliding over to Akiri, Fearless Voyager mid-battle, right when she needs them most! SO SICK!

Speaking of sick…infect is a word that must be spoken carefully at the game table. One whiff of Infect, and your opponents will quickly turn a game of Commander into Archenemy. Is it deserved? Probably. Are we still gonna run it? YOU BETCHA, BUCKAROO! I present to you Grafted Exoskeleton!

Whether it's attached to Akiri, Fearless Voyager or a bigger creature like Balan, Wandering Knight, this Equipment becomes lethal incredibly fast. However, I would be remiss if I did not highlight the saltiest little piece of tech this list has to offer. Pair Chandra's Ignition and a creature equipped with the Exoskeleton for a massive spread of Infect damage.

Big Beaters

So we got the swords and we got the boots. All we need now are creatures to wear them. The cool thing is that they look great on everyone! In order to play smoothly, each creature's abilities are incredibly specific to the deck's theme. Cards like Puresteel Paladin, Danitha Capashen, Paragon, and Zirda, the Dawnwaker help us reduce equip costs while simultaneously serving as bodies to wield our terrifying weapons. Indomitable Archangel and Leonin Abunas help protect our artifacts. If they just so happen to rust and hit the yard, worry not, Sun Titan and Tiana, Ship's Caretaker bring them back!

For card draw, Sram, Senior Edificer and Puresteel Paladin allow us to draw whenever an Equipment ETB's under our control. Maybe we need that one specific Equipment to win us the game? At first glance, this deck may appear to lack tutors, but we have no shortage of them! Stonehewer Giant and Stoneforge Mystic are two must-includes when running many weapons.

Lastly, we have our big beaters. Sometimes a fist is a fist, and if this deck were a person, this person would have about 40 fists...at least.

Our first big hitter is Kemba, Kha Regent. She allows us to go wide. Whether we need bodies for attacking or blocking, she gives us exactly what we need.

Next we have Champion of the Flame. At first glance this card isn't much to look at. It's an Uncommon after all, right? WRONG! This card is a diamond in the rough! It's the Slippery Bogle of Equipment! While it may lack protection keywords, the artifacts attached to it will certainly provide it that, making it a lethal big beater.

Isn't it interesting how most of the good Equipment-centric cards in Magic are cats? A perfect example is Balan, Wandering Knight! This fancy feast of a feline is absolutely terrifying. His two mana equip-all cost is so incredibly cheap. With the particular artifacts we run, he is guaranteed to be a rather large, hasty double striker.

Last but not least is Heavenly Blademaster. The art for her could not be more fitting. She descends upon the battlefield, blades in hand, ready to mow down everything in her sight. She is truly the biggest of beaters in this deck. But what makes her so special? Yeah, her ETB has all Equipment attach to her, but Balan does that as well (for two mana, at least). Well….she makes all of our creatures big beaters as well. This death from above bolsters our army for each Equipment attached, turning our tiny militia into a ban of Popeyes after they ate their spinach. The majority of the creatures we run in this list are a bit smaller, so a large board buff is just what the Kor line-slinger ordered!

Protection & Removal

When it comes to protection and removal, Red and White are two colors that are certainly not lacking. This deck runs the typical Boros removal spells: Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, Austere Command, and Blasphemous Act. You name it, we have it!

But what about protection spells? Boros Charm and Teferi's Protection were originally added to fetch with Sunforger. ...Then I remembered that Sunforger only gets instants, and then I got incredibly sad that I couldn't snag a Steelshaper's Gift or an Open the Armory. Reading the card explains the card, kids. Learn from my mistakes. While Sunforger was ultimately cut, these cards are incredibly important towards protecting our incredibly fragile swords and boots!

The MVP

I have wares if you have coin! What do you mean, you don't have enough money?! Whelp, I guess you can't afford to cast and equip that Sword of Sinew and Steel. What a shame. If only there was a way to generate a mass amount of mana. WELL THERE IS! This tech's MVP is Dockside Extortionist!

One of the best red cards recently printed, this creature shines in this list. When choosing an MVP, I tend to pick a creature or a spell that focuses mainly on the theme. For a while, I was debating on making Heavenly Blademaster the MVP, however, there is no denying the amazing value that our Extortionist has to offer. Dockside allows us to ramp in ways we couldn't imagine in Boros, and is definitely the deck's shining star.

The Flavor Win

What's more flavorful than adding the Planeswalker who betrayed you, froze you, and pushed you off a cliff, amiright? That's right. We have no idea if Akiri is alive or not, and unfortunately, Nahiri is to blame. So of course we had to run two of the most powerful Nahiri cards printed! Not only is adding Nahiri flavorful, but she is incredibly functional as well.

First we have Nahiri, the Lithomancer. This mono-white walker is definitely a force to be reckoned with. While I'm not a huge fan of her ultimate, it's her +2 and her -2 that I am enamored with. Generating tokens that can auto equip for free is pretty powerful, but putting Equipment cards onto the battlefield from either the yard or our hand is straight gas.

The most impactful Nahiri in this deck just so happens to be the newer one! The one that pushed Akiri off a cliff, to be exact: Nahiri, Heir of the Ancients. I cannot say how integral this walker is to this deck, particularly her -2 and -3...AND THE FACT THAT YOU CAN DO IT IMMEDIATELY!!! Searching for an Equipment is pretty sweet—however, dealing damage to target creature or planeswalker equal to TWICE the number of Equipment you control is absolutely...chef's kiss. Surely this -3 makes Nahiri's purposeful mistake of pushing Akiri off a cliff forgivable, right?

Final Thoughts

We built a Boros deck and OH MY GOD IT WAS SO HARD! Once lands were added, we had a total of 170 cards that needed to be cut. I still maintain that this deck would truly be optimal at 200 cards, but we can workshop a 200 card singleton format later. The most challenging aspect of this brew was finding a nice balance between artifacts and non-artifact spells.

My initial worry was flooding the deck with so many Equipment that we wouldn't have enough creatures to attach them too. Thanks to the wonderful folks in chat, we were able to make a handful of tough cuts and ultimately create a beautiful tech. Going forward, I would like to add cards like Open the Vaults and Roar of Reclamation to help us rebuild, in the event of a painful Vandalblast.

So we built an Equipment deck—and a Boros Equipment deck to boot! This list has it all. Huge hitters, card draw, ramp, and lots of delicious keywords! Boros is all about passion and taking leaps, and Akiri inspired me to do exactly that.

...Now can you guys finally admit that Boros doesn't suck?
