Like Zendikar Rising before it, Kaldheim looks to be ideal for the budget-conscious Modern player. There is a deep tribal theme, powerful uncommons, and affordable mana fixing within a flavorful Nordic backdrop.

Old-Growth Troll

Old-Growth Troll is a unique design that will see play in Standard, which means it has potential for Modern and Pioneer. What makes the Troll viable is its ability to help you recover from removal or a board wipe. Even then, it survives a Lightning Bolt and requires a revolted Fatal Push to remove, which is a good baseline for Modern. You'll want to play Old-Growth Troll within heavy green builds such as Mono-Green Stompy due to the mana requirements. However, using the Aura half to enchant a basic Forest within a Mono-Green shell is a reliable way to blank Field of Ruin in Pioneer and Modern.

As I mentioned recently, Old-Growth Troll can easily fit in a Mono-Green Stompy shell in both of these formats.

The list above is an affordable starting point in Modern that uses previously loved Standard cards such as Pelt Collector. The list is Pioneer friendly from the get-go as you can cut Rancor for Snakeskin Veil. There's no Steel Leaf Champion since it causes tension with the Troll, but you could accommodate both if you prefer. However, the Troll coming with trample is ideal since you want to connect with your opponents regularly.

Old-Growth Troll is the kind of design that would be excellent as a cycle in each color. Mono-color decks are budget-friendly and popular with casual players, so supporting them with efficient threats seems like an easy way to make a lot of players happy.

Pathway Lands

With the release of Kaldheim, the pathway cycle is now complete with Simic, Rakdos, Azorius, and Golgari pairings featuring in the set. These are a great budget alternative on expensive duals such as shock and fast lands in Modern and Pioneer.

Henegate Pathway

I anticipate the Simic and Rakdos versions to be above budget since these are both desirable color pairings in Standard at present. However, these lands ensure that you can play aggressive strategies without breaking the bank, which was an issue in the past. It seems Wizards of the Coast are adding modular dual-faced cards (MDFCs) regularly in new sets, which means there is hope for the pathway cycle to be an evergreen option for Standard.

Weathered Runestone

Unlike Grafdigger's Cage, Weathered Runestone prevents artifacts, enchantments, and planeswalkers from entering the battlefield directly from the graveyard or library. There are a lot of effects in Modern that care about permanents entering the graveyard from your library such as Whir of Invention, Sword of the Meek, and Goblin Engineer. Despite Urza, Lord High Artificer seeing less play, there is an option to respect these strategies if they ever come back. Naturally, the artifact is seeing print to respect Elspeth Conquers Death in Standard—that card remains a nuisance in the format.

Like its predecessor, Weathered Runestone keeps traditional reanimator effects in check as well as creatures like Narcomoeba, Bloodghast, and Vengevine. Weathered Runestone will feature in various Modern sideboards to complement Karn, the Great Creator since you can grab the artifact in game one. This will become a decent option alongside Grafdigger's Cage, and in the same vein as Pithing Needle and Sorcerous Spyglass they'll see play together to dodge Chalice of the Void. It's ideal to have answers at various curves to respect Chalice depending on your local metagame.

Birgi, God of Storytelling

Birgi, God of Storytelling is an exciting card that could make an impression in Modern. Granted, it will unlikely feature in the higher ranks of the format, but it could be an option for Mono-Red Storm.

Instead of discounting your instants and sorceries, Birgi generates mana for each spell cast which you do not lose as phases end. As you aren't in blue, you have to lean on spells such as Valakut Awakening and Reforge the Soul to keep the card draw going. Your win conditions are similar to Izzet Storm, in that you complete the chain of spells with either Grapeshot or Empty the Warrens.

Mono-Red Storm is a glass cannon compared to the Izzet variant, but is a fun option if you want to play something different. You could opt into running the Madcap Experiment package within your sideboard if you want a response to the aggressive decks. Even though Birgi's flipped side is five mana, Harnfel, Horn of Bounty may become relevant as you can trade dead cards for more action. There can be something charming in playing a strategy that is restricted in what it can do, yet which can still take over the game with an explosive turn.

Before, Gods were all mythic rares given the power these cards possessed in sets such as Theros Beyond Death. With Kaldheim, the God typing is now accessible at rare, so they're more likely to show up in packs. This will make cards such as Birgi easy to acquire and affordable for a long time. Birgi is one to keep an eye out as she can do something very powerful in a color that does not usually generate mana turn-after-turn. Whether it's Mono-Red Storm or another Storm variant with Baral, Chief of Compliance and Mox Amber, Birgi offers plenty of potential.

Snow Dual Lands

Arcum's Astrolabe is banned in Modern, but there are new ways to fix your snow mana in decks with Ice-Fang Coatl:

What makes these incredible is the sub-typing which enables you to find these off a fetch land. Despite fetches being far from budget-friendly, you can run cheaper fetches such as Windswept Heath to get Glacial Floodplain in Azorius Control as an example. Plus, these are all at common rarity, meaning these will always remain affordable. Before, running snow basics was expensive since these were either printed in older sets or sets such as Modern Horizons. With the release of Kaldheim, there will be easy access to snow basics that will not punish you financially. Snow lands offer little drawback in deck building allowing you to run these alongside the new snow duals without any issues.

These will not re-shape Modern in any meaningful way, but they will allow you to run a handful of these in control or midrange strategies where you can afford these coming in tapped. Again, it proves the point that Wizards of the Coast can print decent mana fixing at lower rarities, and I hope to see the trend continue.

What Else Should You Pick Up?

With the impact of Snow coming to Modern in a big way, there are a few cards from Modern Horizons that warrant a revisit with Kaldheim's release.

Dead of Winter saw sideboard play when Arcum's Astrolabe dominated the format and could make a return given there will be more snow permanents than ever before. While it's not quite Toxic Deluge, it's a good impersonation if you intend to run a bunch of snow permanents within a midrange or control build.

On Thin Ice is a low-key alternative to Path to Exile in Modern if you have ways to protect it. On Thin Ice can fall to a Ghost Quarter or Field of Ruin, but running countermagic like Tale's End can ensure the enchantment (and land) sticks around. The best home for the Aura is within Azorius Control or Azorius Midrange builds where you have ways to protect your answers.

Kaldheim looks to offer a refreshing take on what was an exhausting 12 months of Standard sets. There doesn't seem to be anything inherently broken, but there are powerful cards with plenty of synergies on offer. Kaldheim draws a lot of inspiration from Ixalan, where you have this rich tribal theme coupled with a flavorful backdrop to draw players in. I don't think Kaldheim will have the same impact as Theros Beyond Death or Throne of Eldraine, but the underpowered nature of Kaldheim will be a welcome reprieve for players.
