Modern Horizons 2's release is coming up, and it's looking like one of the best sets ever. It's certainly going to change Modern forever. Beyond all the fun and powerful new cards, the reprinting of fetchlands means it's going to be a boon for building decks on a budget. There'll be lots of other bargains, too, so it'll be a great opportunity to get in on the ground floor and pick up future staples.

Two cards at the intersection of a powerful new entry to the format and a potential bargain are Persist and Unmarked Grave, bringing the Legacy package of Reanimate and Entomb to Modern.

The Reanimator strategy has long been a staple in Magic, from past Standard formats to Extended to Legacy, but it's always been glaringly absent from Modern. Reanimation tools existed—they just weren't good enough.

These efficient and powerful new cards change things completely, and are clearly aimed at making the strategy the real deal in Modern. I put them together in a straightforward and budget-friendly Mono-Black Reanimator deck focused on using them to get a massive game-winning creature into play ASAP.

Return target nonlegendary creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter on it.

Buy This Card! https://www.tcgplayer.com/product/240043/magic-modern-horizons-2-persist

The strategy is simple: use Unmarked Grave to find whatever creature is best for the situation, then put it into play with Persist and hope it's good enough to lock up the game.

Reanimation spells are only as good as the creatures they can return, and Modern has a large selection that covers most bases and situations one might encounter in the metagame. The beauty is you can play any of your favorites, and the package can be tuned as you find yourself using certain creatures more than others, or perhaps wishing you had one you're missing. Unmarked Grave only finding non-legends does restrict things and prevents access to some standouts like Griselbrand, but there are plenty of great options.

Here's what I included:

Public enemy #1 in Modern is Izzet Prowess, and Sphinx of the Steel Wind is the best card for beating them. Its massive lifelink and vigilance body ends the game while containing their threats.

The flexibility of destroying opposing permanents while getting a huge threat makes Terastodon a go-to target in many situations. It can also be turned on one's own lands to make a huge board presence, which makes Terastodon the best generic, game-ending threat as well.

Against an opponent with a lot of removal, like blue control or Jund, the hexproof Inkwell Leviathan may be the most reliable option.

Sire of Insanity can be a quick and easy way to take down anyone who has a hand more dangerous than their board, like combo or control decks. Discarding their hand and leaving them with nothing but a big creature clocking them is a good deal.

Some decks just might not be able to kill a big creature—with something like Merfolk coming to mind as an example. Against those decks, Platinum Angel will end the game.

One of my favorite cards in the game is Sundering Titan, and I won't pass up any opportunity to play with it. It's great against any multi-color deck, but is especially useful against lands decks because it utterly blows out anyone with a Dryad of the Ilysian Grove in play.

I have Sepulchral Primordial in the sideboard as a way to get extra value while disrupting opposing Reanimator decks.

An option against creature decks is Massacre Wurm, which may clear utility and value creatures that would otherwise operate against something like Platinum Angel. It's also very castable in this Mono-Black deck.

The deck also includes Vengeful Pharaoh, which isn't actually a reanimation target, but instead a way to get extra utility from Unmarked Grave. Putting it into the graveyard can act like a removal spell, and in some situations may be the best option, so I thought it was worth including to try.

In a similar category is Skyclave Shade. It's not a reanimation target, but the utility it adds to Unmarked Grave as a threat from the graveyard is appealing.

Key Support Cards

Unmarked Grave and Persist alone aren't enough to reliably reanimate something every game, so they do need some support to make the deck consistent enough. One perfect tool for bridging the gap is Ransack the Lab—a hidden gem from the first Modern Horizons. Ideally, this card selection that fills the graveyard will find Persist, while setting it up like Unmarked Grave. At worst, it cycles. It's a nice card selection spell in black, and a great fit here.

Sometimes this deck will draw its big creatures, so having a way to discard them is important. Collective Brutality is a great graveyard enabler that adds some potent utility against all variety of opponents—whether killing a threatening creature or stripping the opponent of a key disruption spell. It's excellent in this metagame where Izzet Prowess is on top, since every mode is useful,so it can wreck the opponent.

I'm a sucker for transmute, and this deck is a perfect opportunity to break out Shred Memory. Being able to find Unmarked Grave or Persist helps add some consistency, and I like that it can do it on-curve on turn three, finding whatever is missing and setting up casting both two-mana plays on four. The fact that it's also a graveyard hoser is a bonus, and will wreck any unlucky mirror match or Dredge player the deck encounters.

Bringing it All Together

Rounding out the deck is Zombify. It's expensive so it isn't ideal, but it does help amp up the consistency with more reanimation. Duress is just a strong go-to disruption spell that clears away any counterspells or troublesome graveyard hosers after sideboard. I like the idea of replacing a couple Swamp with Malakir Rebirth, potentially protecting a hard-earned threat after it's reanimated.

That all comes together to a deck solely focused on reanimating a massive creature, and it has all the tools it needs to do that. Even through disruption.

The single biggest problem for the deck will be graveyard hosers, which a Mono-Black deck has few ways to win around beyond discarding or hoping to cast its threats. To help combat this issue, I've included a set of old favorite Nantuko Shade in the sideboard. It lets the deck switch gears, and hopefully catch an opponent who cut their creature removal for graveyard hosers.

Also note Feed the Swarm, which beyond being catch-all creature removal is a tutorable out to Leyline of the Void.

The deck should be a killer at the kitchen table, but there are some ways to make it even better.

Upgrades

I have my eyes on the new Profane Tutor, which brings the true Demonic Tutor tutor effect to Modern. It'll be excellent in this strategy, and suspended on turn two it sets up a turn four Persist—which is what the deck is aiming for beyond its best draws, when it naturally finds both Unmarked Grave and Persist and can do it turn three. Because it finds either missing piece, or anything else, Profane Tutor is better than Zombify.

Every Modern player knows Thoughtseize is one of the premier spells, and a card no black deck should be without. It's a big upgrade over Duress, but especially so in a Reanimator deck where Thoughtseize can be turned on one's own hand to pitch a creature. This opens up access to the deck's best potential draw, pitching a creature turn one, followed by a turn two Persist.

MH2 brings a spicy reanimation target in Archon of Cruelty. Part removal, part card advantage, part threat, I could see Archon of Cruelty being a good go-to option in a variety of situations.

At around $20 it was too pricey for my basic budget build, but Platinum Emperion is one of the most powerful creatures in Modern, and a perfect reanimation option. It's going to get a ton of use and is a high-priority for bringing the deck to the next level. It's an easy upgrade over its budget replacement Platinum Angel.

In the sideboard I added Dauthi Voidwalker, which is slated to be a new staple. Leyline of the Void on an unblockable stick, plus a bonus ability of potentially stealing what it exiles, makes this one heck of a card and an excellent option here. It can be reanimated to hose the mirror, or dug up by any of the tutors.

I'm a big fan of Grave Titan—a go-to when Reanimating in cube drafts. It's the perfect cross-section of being a game-winner when reanimated, but also very castable. I left it off the budget build, but I want one somewhere in my 75. It's attractive as a potential card to tutor up and cast to beat graveyard hate.

Reanimator is Finally in Modern

Modern Horizons 2 bringing together Persist and its enabler, Unmarked Grave, is clearly designed to elevate the reanimator strategy to the next level in Modern. It's finally poised to break through as a legitimate competitive strategy after being absent from the format during it's nearly decade lifespan. Buildable on any budget, Reanimator is going to be a lot of fun to play with, and a new nightmare for opponents.
