We've seen snow-covered lands in a few sets now, with the most recent one before Kaldheim being Modern Horizons. While many players love snow-bovered lands—they're largely straight-up upgrades over normal basic lands— actual snow spells have had trouble breaking through into Constructed play. The few that have, like Ice-Fang Coatl and Skred, are normally not played alongside other snow spells.

It's fairly easy to stick snow-covered lands in a deck over basics (especially in a format with fetch lands like Modern) and still reliably trigger your one snow payoff card. But I've yet to see snow cards reach their full potential in a dedicated snow tribal deck. After looking through the full set reveal, there is plenty of snow-based synergy in Kaldheim, and we could finally see a fully snow-based strategy in Standard.

Colors

Each color has at least one snow card in Kaldheim. This is similar to Modern Horizons, where the base colors of snow were Simic, but you could always splash for some of the other colors as necessary in a draft. Of course, here we aren't drafting—we're building a complete Constructed deck.

The most depth is in blue and green, but red and black also have plenty of good options to choose from. The new common cycle of snow tap lands that produce two different colors of mana could help us go beyond a two-color deck. However, going to three or more colors is still going to be quite tough if we want every single land to be snow-covered.

Cards

The following are the best Kaldheim cards for a snow-themed deck. For many of them, their power level directly correlates with how many other snow permanents you play alongside them.

An intriguing tutor option, but it happens to be white, and there generally isn't a good enough reason to play white.

I wish Icebreaker Kraken tapped creatures when it entered the battlefield. Sure, it can lock opposing creatures out of the game for a couple turns, but I think it could have been designed to be a bit stronger than it is.

An aggressive snow-based deck is a very real possibility. This card has a lot of text, and means you will always have something to do with your mana later in games. This is a late-game bomb that can be played on turn one, so that's pretty cool.

Scry 5 and draw three cards for five mana is quite good, and in the right deck, that's how this card reads. The question is whether, on turn five, you'd prefer card draw over something that impacts the board.

This is the biggest reason to play a snow-themed deck. Tapping one mana a turn to draw a card is pretty absurd, and Frost Augur has that potential. Even if your opponent gets rid of it, they normally have to trade down on mana, and oftentimes Augur will have already gotten you some cards. Absolutely amazing.

This is a really powerful card, and definitely provides a nice incentive to play black, especially if you can build a more control-oriented deck. However, Blood on the Snow is the type of card that could be played in a deck where it's the only snow spell and still be good, as long as you have snow-covered lands.

Draugr Necromancer has so much potential. It will be at its best against other creature-based decks where creatures are reliably dying, but it's still playable even if you can't trigger it.

Red offers quality burn spells, and being able to kill something basically for free if you can generate extra mana to cast a second spell after Tundra Fumarole is a big deal.

Three damage for one mana is definitely good enough, assuming we can reliably cast it early in the game.

A Sultai snow option is something new, but it makes sense. Jorn, God of Winter might honestly be good enough to play even without Kaldring the Rimestaff. I feel like we're giving up some value if we can only cast one part of the card, though.

Blessing of Frost has the potential to be very good. Optimally you can cast this card on turn four with multiple creatures already in play, to draw cards while still adding to the board.

One-mana removal that can scale up to take care of big creatures is pretty sweet. This will compete with other fight cards in Standard, but in a snow-based deck Blizzard Brawl should get the nod.

Having a way to ramp can be very important with lots of the big snow payoffs being four or more mana.

On turn three you are doing better than drawing two cards if you already have three snow permanents in the graveyard, but the fact they must be permanents and can't be any spell is a bit unfortunate.

Creatures that you can play out of the graveyard are always going to be powerful simply by virtue of the consistency card advantage they represent over a long game.

Svella, Ice Shaper is going to be great in a deck that cares about both ramping and having a snow theme, but not in a deck that is looking to be super aggressive.

Putting It All Together

This is going to be a struggle, but I like a good struggle. Deck building shouldn't be easy.

I'm happy to rule out the color white from any snow deck I'm building, but after that it becomes quite challenging. Clearly there are a number of good cards out there, but you are trying to operate within the confines of a snow-covered manabase, which is quite difficult. I will present two decks today, but there is absolutely a ton of unexplored territory here.

Perhaps the most straightforward direction is just playing blue and green. These are the two colors with the most snow cards in them, and by playing only two colors you can have a slightly more consistent manabase.

Is this deck ready to immediately be a tier 1 Standard deck? Probably not, but it's close. It likely requires a couple more good early drop creatures. Right now we want to be more aggressive with cards like Blessing of Frost to pump up our creatures, but in order for that to happen we already need a strong board presence.

We can also go in a three-color direction of course, which provides even more snow options. This is my Temur build:

This is Temur Ramp with a snow theme. Early removal like Frost Bite helps you not get run over in the early game. Svella, Ice Shaper fits perfectly in a deck like this because it will block early attackers, but also helps ramp. This feels more similar to decks that have already had success in Standard because of cards like Genesis Ultimatum and Graven Lore that can provide massive amounts of card advantage.

Wrapping Up

There are a lot of strong snow cards in Kaldheim, with a lot of untapped potential. However, the cards are spread out across each color, and the manabases are not easy to build, which is a big issue. If all the snow cards were in only two colors in Kaldheim then it would be very easy to have an amazing deck for Standard. There are also no other Standard sets that have snow cards, which means building a snow deck requires having most of the cards come from Kaldheim. If another snowy set is introduced while Kaldheim is still Standard-legal, that would be extremely interesting.

This is day zero, and Kaldheim isn't even legal yet. There are certainly other color combinations and cards that are going to be worth trying. Frost Augur provides plenty of power, so I hope you take the snow ideas I've presented here and run with them.

In other words, go play in the snow.
