The Virtual World cards are here! Today I want to look at the entire theme card by card, giving you a rundown of what they do, and how I would approach the strategy.

…And it's a good thing I'm writing about these cards rather than making a video about them, because not even I can pronounce most of their names. Let's get to it.

What Do Virtual World Cards Do?

All the Main Deck Virtual World monsters do the same thing, except for one of them which I'll get to later (that's Virtual World Hime - Nyannyan). They all have effects that let you Special Summon them from your hand by targeting another face-up Virtual World card on your field; that target can be another monster, a continuous spell or a continuous trap.

When you resolve a Virtual World monster's effect for that Special Summon, you must first send another Virtual World card from your deck to the graveyard; the card you send has to be a different card type from the one you targeted. That means if you targeted a monster, you can send a spell or trap. If you target a spell, you'll send a monster or a trap card, and so on. Do that and you get to Special Summon your monster. And yeah, note that your opponent can actually use Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring to negate that Special Summon.

Once you Special Summon your Virtual World monster from your hand, and after you send the card of your choice from your deck to your graveyard, you also get another bonus. effect Each is unique to the specific monster you're Special Summoning.

Virtual World Mai-Hime - Lulu searches you another Virtual World card from your deck; you have to choose a card that's a different card type from whatever you targeted on the field, or sent from the deck. Virtual World Mai-Hime - Lulu also a Tuner.

Virtual World Xiezhi - Jiji gets you back a card in your End Phase. If you've played Burning Abyss, it's kind of similar to Scarm, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss.

Those are the two Level 3s alongside Virtual World Hime - Nyannyan.

Virtual World Roshi - Laolao lets you revive a Virtual World monster of a different name than what you sent from the deck to the graveyard with Virtual World Roshi - Laolao. This monster's a Level 6 Tuner.

Virtual World Kirin - Lili lets you send a second card from your deck to the graveyard, again, as long as it isn't the same card type as whatever you targeted on the field or sent to the graveyard the first time. Like Virtual World Roshi - Laolao, Virtual World Kirin - Lili also a Level 6.

All of the Special Summon from hand abilities are hard once-per-turn effects, so you generally want to stay diversified and avoid drawing multiple copies. And if you use any one of those effects, you're locked into Special Summoning only Level 3 or Rank 3 or higher monsters. That's not a huge restriction for most types of summons, but it means you can't really play Link Monsters.

So What Do You Want To Send?

If you're sending a monster to the graveyard, the best card to send is probably Virtual World Hime - Nyannyan; you can revive it for free if you summon another Level 3, and when it's revived that way it becomes a Tuner. If Virtual World Hime - Nyannyan leaves the field it gets banished, but that's actually a good thing for this deck; if Virtual World Hime - Nyannyan gets banished, you can recycle another one of your banished cards back to your deck.

If you're sending a spell card, you'd want to choose Virtual World Gate - Qinglong. Once per turn if it's in the graveyard, you can banish it to add another Virtual World monster from your deck to your hand as long as you send another card from your hand to the graveyard afterwards. That basically means that every two Virtual World monsters can send this card and search for any other monster. That's really good!

While on the field, Virtual World Gate - Qinglong is a Continuous Spell that lets you negate a monster effect on the field until the end of the turn, by banishing another Virtual World card from your graveyard. I supposed that effect could come in handy when you're going second. And with the spell card Virtual World City - Kauwloon, you can fetch Virtual World Gate - Qinglong from your deck and immediately use it to negate a monster.

Virtual World Gate - Chuche is your one trap card option. Its graveyard effect lets you increase or decrease the Level or Rank of a Virtual World monster you control by three. It's a bit lackluster, but you need it if you're missing the right Levels for certain combos.

The on-field effect of Virtual World Gate - Chuche is much better! It lets you return two banished Virtual World cards with different names back to your deck to pop a card on the field. It serves as a searchable interruption and removal when you need to disrupt your opponent or pop Mystic Mine, and the recycling is a solid bonus.

I briefly mentioned the spell, but that's because that's really all Virtual World City - Kauwloon does. It has other bonus effects depending on how many other face-up Gates you control, but at the moment I don't think it's possible to resolve those effects consistently. Blazing Vortex may make it more realistic in the future, since it introduces another "Gate" trap card.

Alright, So How Does It Play?

In my playtesting, I find that you want to draw multiple Virtual World monsters with different names so you can summon them all and get their bonuses. And though you do want to special summon them all, you usually have to Normal Summon one of them unless you open with one of either [Virtual World Gate - Qinglong or Virtual World City - Kauwloon to target.

From there you gather as many resources as you can, so you can make Synchros and Xyz Summons! The Virtual World theme introduces two new Synchros and three new Xyz, so I'll give you a rundown on those too

Virtual World Shell - Jaja is a Rank 3 that takes at least two Level 3s to Xyz Summon. Its effect is similar to Mechquipped Angineer and D.D. Warrior Lady. Personally I wouldn't play this card; its effect is pretty underwhelming for the level of investment, and the other options you could make for that kind of cost.

Virtual World Dragon - Longlong is another Rank 3 that takes at least 2 Level 3s to make, but ideally you want to Xyz Summon it with three materials. That's because while it has materials it can't be targeted, and when your opponent controls a monster, and they activate the effect of a monster with an attribute that isn't on their field, you can detach two materials from Virtual World Dragon - Longlong to negate it.

That effect is a bit situational, but 2400 ATK backed by something sort of like a monster negate is actually pretty viable. The added buff of being untargetable comes in handy too.

Virtual World Phoenix - Fanfan is the theme's Rank 6, requiring at least two Level 6 materials. It's a pretty aggressive card: by detaching two materials you can target a face-up card your opponent controls and another card in the graveyard, and banish both. If you Xyz Summons Fanfan and it's destroyed by an opponent's card, either by battle or card effect, you get to Special Summon two more Virtual World monsters from your deck with matching type and attribute.

Virtual World Phoenix - Fanfan a pretty good pressure tool, replacing itself when it's destroyed and keeping you on the field. Not bad.

On to the synchros!

Virtual World Beast - Jiujiu a generic Level 6 Synchro that requires that standard one Tuner and one or more non-Tuners. It can't be destroyed by battle or card effects while you have at least two different monsters in your graveyard with the same type and attribute, and you can also two different monsters with the same type and attributes to send another card on the field to the graveyard.

So while Virtual World Beast - Jiujiu a nice wall, it can also be removal. And in scenarios where you have four monsters in the graveyard, you can get that removal effect while also possibly staying indestructible.

Virtual World Kyubi - Shenshen is supposedly the Virtual World deck's boss monster, being a Level 9 generic Synchro. While Virtual World Kyubi - Shenshen on the field it's basically Macro Cosmos; any card that would be sent from the field to the graveyard is banished instead. Virtual World Kyubi - Shenshen other big effect is that you can revive it in your Main Phase by banishing two other monsters from the graveyard with different original types and attributes from each other, and that effect works on any turn but the turn Virtual World Kyubi - Shenshen sent to the graveyard.

Virtual World Kyubi - Shenshen third effect lets you recycle a banished card to your graveyard, whenever a monster you control attacks.

Both Synchros are pretty good, mostly when you're going second. I think you'd want to set up the Level 9 Synchro as your main priority, because it's got a great continuous effect and it offers you a clear follow-up for the next turn if it doesn't stay on the field.

But if it's easy to make one Level 9 Synchro, how hard can it be to make a second Level 9Ssynchro? With three Level 3s, one being a Tuner, you can easily climb into a Coral Dragon and then make a Level 9 like Ravenous Crocodragon Archethys to draw some cards. From there you'll make True King of All Calamities to skip your opponent's turn! I think that's a great Turn 1 goal for this strategy, and if you have enough resources, maybe you can even make Number 75: Bamboozling Gossip Shadow so that you can protect yourself from Nibiru, the Primal Being.

How About Some Synergy?

So what does this all mean? Well, the Virtual World deck revolves around Special Summoning from your hand by sending cards from the deck to the graveyard. It locks you out of Link Monsters as well as low Level monsters, and the theme has weird typing with both Wind Psychics and Earth Wyrms. That means it's tough to find good, rewarding cards to compliment the strategy. That said, here are some tech cards that could work well in a Virtual World build.

The deck has a lot of Level 3s, so Psychic Wheeleder can be a big help as you look to make Synchro Summons. It can also destroy another monster with less ATK than your Synchro, which is great when you're trying to pressure your opponent.

Every deck needs some sort of draw power, and Pot of Desires says draw two! That draw power really helps you Special Summon more monsters from your hand so you can keep extending your plays, and since you're mostly playing three-ofs, the "banish ten" effect doesn't generally cause you any problems. The Level 9 Synchro and Virtual World Hime - Nyannyan can both recycle face-down banished cards too, which is a nice bonus.

Pay 800 life points and add up to two banished Psychics to your hand? I think Psychic Path has amazing synergy in this deck. Since Virtual World Hime - Nyannyan will usually get banished anyways, you already have one Psychic monster locked and loaded consistently and quickly.

While you have the Level 9 Virtual World Kyubi - Shenshen on the field, the Macro Cosmos effect works for you to; when you make another Sychro Summon while Virtual World Kyubi - Shenshen on the field, your monsters get banished as well. That means Psychic Path adds back two of them, getting you back pairs of cards like a Virtual World Hime - Nyannyan and a Virtual World Mai-Hime - Lulu or Virtual World Roshi - Laolao. That helps to create big follow-ups, and Psychic Path is a great topdeck when you need it.

Since the deck has high-Level Tuners and non-Tuners, you could also try Ultimaya Tzolkin. It's pretty easy to make in this deck and if you can set a card, you can trigger its effect for a free Crystal Wing Synchro Dragon. You can even start the game off with Dragunity Knight - Trident to rip cards from your opponent's Extra Deck.

Besides Level 6 and Level 9 Synchros, you can also play the generic Level 12 Geomathmech Final Sigma to end games quickly. It's super easy to make, it's unaffected by cards, and it can do double damage when it's in the Extra Monster Zone.

If you want more disruption on Turn 1, Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal is useful at Rank 6. You can send something to the graveyard on your opponent's turn like Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss and send Virtual World Gate - Qinglong to help search on your turn. If you draw the Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss, you can probably make a Rank 3 Dante, Traveler of the Burning Abyss more easily, maybe get some free mills, and then ditch the Farfa, Malebranche of the Burning Abyss for the Beatrice, Lady of the Eternal. That kind of package could be pretty neat.

Remember that even though the Virtual World theme locks you into only Special Summoning monsters at or above Level 3 or Rank 3, that's restriction only takes effect once you use that Special Summon from hand effect. You could technically play other monsters like Magicians' Souls or Tenyi Spirit - Adhara, you just need to play them early.

The synergy with Magicians' Souls is pretty small but it does let you ditch Virtual World Gate - Qinglong or any other spell or trap for free draws. Loading up Virtual World Gate - Qinglong for a free draw makes great value since you want it in your graveyard for that search.

With Level 1s, you can make other Synchros like Herald of the Arc Light, or even a Level 7 Synchro like Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zing. Herald of the Arc Light just a good negate in general, but you have to be careful with it since you won't be able to send cards from your deck to the graveyard if it's on the field. You'd probably want to make it as your fifth or higher summon after you play out the Virtual World monsters from your hand.

Meanwhile Yazi, Evil of the Yang Zing just a nice un-targetable beatstick with an effect that destroys an opposing card (and usually itself too). After it's destroyed, you can special summon out any Wyrm from your deck, so you can follow up with Virtual World Kirin - Lili or Virtual World Xiezhi - Jiji.

So Here's What I'm Running

With that in mind, here's the deck list I built for my first approach to the Virtual World based on all the theory and all the conclusions I came to, looking at the theme card by card.

This list doesn't have a lot of the cool synergies I mentioned, but they're definitely worth trying when you put this together and test it out. Like any other deck that wants to compete, you gotta play hand traps like Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring, Nibiru, the Primal Being and Infinite Impermanence. Nibiru, the Primal Being especially important if you expect to come up against lots of players piloting Prank-Kids, which should be pretty popular soon thanks to their strong combos and Prank-Kids Meow-Meow-Mu, their new Link 1.

I hope you guys enjoyed reading this explanation of the theme, and seeing the thought process I went through approaching a deck I hadn't personally explored before. I think Virtual World has potential; all the search effects make it really consistent, which is key to the success of any serious strategy. The themes limitations do keep you from using cards like Crystron Halqifibrax and Cherubini, Ebon Angel of the Burning Abyss, but it can still accomplish some tremendous things without those cards!
