Hello and welcome to another addition of Droppin' Baums! This week we are diving into one of the rising stars of Modern. Bant Spirits is a deck that got a new toy from Core Set 2019 that threw the deck from decent to fantastic overnight. Supreme Phantom is exactly what this deck needed. Not only did it need one more anthem affect, it really needed another strong two-drop. M19 did not disappoint in either aspect. Let's check out this sick list brought to you by the great Paulo Vitor Damo Da Rosa.
This deck is so much more powerful than I gave it credit for in the past. Bant Spirits has some draws that just feel unbeatable! Being able to have access to Path to Exile, (the best removal spell in the format at the moment) gives you game against the aggressive matchups, which have been some of the more difficult matchups in the past. Their creatures are usually just so much bigger than ours.
Bant Spirits is already very prepared to deal with control thanks to everything having flash with Aether Vial and Collected Company. The creatures that don't happen to have flash do have the ability to be uncounterable with help from Cavern of Souls. All of those elements spell out nightmare situations for control players. A nightmare situation that we proved in the games!
These matchups can get tricky if our opponents have access to Terminus. That card is just so hard to deal with and play around since it can come down as early as turn two. Outside of that card, our control opponents have a very tough time dealing with all the uncounterable and hexproof creatures. These are good matchups.
This matchup can be very tough. Humans just gets off to such a fast start. This is a very die-roll dependant matchup.
This matchup feels very good to me. Being able to react to your opponent's spells AND deploy threats when they don't try to combo off is insane. Also being able to Spell Queller Past in Flames is very big game!
This matchup is great. Tron is just to slow most of the time to keep up with these evasive creatures. Oblivion Stone is your biggest problem and thanks to Stony Silence you don't have to worry about it too much.
This is not an easy matchup. Your paths are so important if your opponent has a Hollow One draw. If you don't have the perfect mix of disruption and pressure it's so hard to win. This might be Bant Spirits' worst matchup.
That's it for this week. I hope you all enjoyed casting Geist of Saint Traft as much as I did. Good luck to anyone playing in GP Stockholm and GP Hong Kong this weekend! I'm calling it right now saying Bant Spirits wins at least one of them!
See you next week,
