Hello and welcome to another edition of Droppin' Baums! This week we are shifting gears and heading back into the exciting world of Modern. I'm personally very excited to come back to this exciting format for a few weeks. Modern is always moving very fast—the best deck in Modern shifts from week to week. This, of course, does not mean that there is only one deck choice in Modern. The format is so deep we usually have about five tier 1 decks at any given time. One deck that has felt the highs and lows of the Modern world is Grixis Death's Shadow.

This was once the best and only deck to be playing in Modern. Now the deck has shifted back into a tier 2-ish strategy. Until of course, the Pardee master himself came back with the resurrection. Let's check out Sam Pardee's list from his 2nd place finish at GP Calgary.

These games are so exciting! Who would have guessed a deck that tries to kill itself just enough to win would generate exciting games? Oh, everyone? That makes sense! Sam Pardee is truly a genius, this deck felt fantastic. The thing I love about this deck is it has a good-to-even matchup against Phoenix, which is really all you can hope for against that crazy powerful deck. And it crushes Tron and Prison—two of the decks that are popping up to deal with Arclight Phoenix. I also think Thoughtseize decks are going to thrive with the new London mulligan rule. When your opponent tries to mulligan to the perfect five cards, you can just steal their best card on turn one!
