Hello and welcome to another addition of Droppin' Baums! This week we are peeking at a powerhouse (nearly) Mono-Green Aggro list. This is a deck that has always been hovering right below tier one status for the last year or so, and I think that is about to change! The additions to the deck may be subtle, but they are for sure not short of power! Thorn Lieutenant over Merfolk Branchwalker doesn't seem like it is the biggest deal, but it really is. Merfolk Branchwalker is just such a bad card right now. Dying to Goblin Chainwhirler half the time or just having be a vanilla 3/2 is nothing exciting. Thorn Lieutenant at least does a good job at protecting yourself against Mono-Red while still being a card that makes combat really tough when you get to six mana. This list was created by Standard specialist Andrew Jessup. This dude is a fantastic player. His skills truly shine in the first week of standard, he is always picking the best week one shells. Let's check out this list that Andrew Jessup made Top 8 with at SCG Worcester!

Another big addition to the sideboard would be Vine Mare. Vine Mare changed the dynamic of the deck a ton! Being able to slam a threat that can't be dealt with by Esper Control turns a once terrible matchup into a positive one. The thing I like about this list is that the deck is not trying to be something it isn't. It is staying true to being a mono-green deck and it's not trying to get to cute with some heavy splashes.

A few things I learned about the games is 1.) I am a god at outdrawing my opponent in the mirror. 2.) This deck deserves to be in the tier one catagory. We had some good games, but most of them were very lopsided and I would have felt very unlucky to have lost them. The deck has some real power!

Sideboard Guide

Red Aggro

+2 Hour of Glory
+1 Greenbelt Rampager
+1 Aethersphere Harvester
+1 Thrashing Brontodon

-4 Llanowar Elves
-1 Blossoming Defense

This matchup can always be tough if your opponent has a great draw and curves out into a Glorybringer. Those games become very hard to win. If your opponent stumbles at all, all our threats are very tough to kill. Everything has four toughness or gains some kind of value when it is killed, which is huge, literally! This matchup is all about hustling out a Ghalta, Primal Hunger and watching it feast on the tininess of Hazoret, the Fervent.

Control

+2 Duress
+4 Vine Mare
+2 Nissa, Vital Force
+2 Vivien Reid

-3 Thrashing Brontodon
-3 Blossoming Defense (against Esper I would keep in two of them)
-1 Skysovereign, Consul Flagship
-3 Ghalta, Primal Hunger

This is where Vine Mare shines! Being able to attack with a hexproof threat is just way too difficult for most control shells to deal with. UW they still have Settle the Wreckage so it is not an auto win situation like it is against Esper Control. You do still have every threat being a must answer threat so that makes attacking into Settle much easier.

Mirror

+2 Hour of Glory
+1 Thrashing Brontodon
+1 Greenbelt Rampager
+1 Aethersphere Harvester
+2 Nissa, Vital Force
+1 Vivien Reid

-4 Blossoming Defense
-4 Thorn Lieutenant

I would like to say I have the secrets to this matchup, but I just don't. It really is just a very luck-based mirror match. Everything revolves around Ghalta, Primal Hunger and Rhonas the Indomitable. Draw those cards early and together and you will probably win. Check out the first two matches for proof! ;)

Zombies

+4 Vine Mare

-4 Thorn Lieutenant

Having a creature that can't be killed or blocked by any creatures in their deck seems insane. This matchup is all about protecting your big creatures and smashing them at your opponent. Blossoming Defense is just so good against them since most of their removal costs four mana.

Mono-Green Aggro always feels like it is such a one-dimensional deck that it shouldn't be doing as well as it is. It keeps proving me wrong every time I play it. It just feels so good when it is good, and unfortunately so bad when it is bad. Maybe that's what leaves a bad taste in people's mouths about the deck sometimes. Check out these great games that get played! Especially the fourth match. It is a good one. Thanks for watching everyone!

See you next week,
