Hello and welcome to another addition of Droppin' Baums! This week's deck is brought to you by the one and only Shuhei Nakamura. Shuhei is always building something interesting, and Esper Control in this metagame is no exception. Esper does have some serious problems with the mana base, since we lost the cycle lands from Amonkhet. Having to play Evolving Wilds is almost enough of a reason to not play the deck all together. ALMOST being the key word! I had some great success with this deck whenever I could cast my spells. You get to play the very synergistic cards that blue-black has to offer along with being able to play the best card in the format, Teferi, Hero of Dominaria.

This deck already has a huge amount of power to it, can you imagine how good this deck will be when Ravnica Allegiance comes out? This is going to be a great reference to look back on when the spoilers start to pour in! Every deck in standard must plan for Niv-Mizzet. The next set will improve the mana base for sure. The Eldest Reborn and Teferi, Hero of Dominaria are the two best answers to Niv-Mizzet right now. With a better mana base, Esper Control is going to be a true Dragon killer!

Sideboard Guide

Izzet Drakes

You have to attack their hand and you have to attack it often. If they get a few Arclight Phoenix in the top 15 cards it is a tough game to win.

White Aggro

We are pretty much pre-sideboarded for this matchup, so that helps the game ones a lot. Everything revolves around being able to find one of your three copies of Golden Demise. Without it, spot removal and hand disruption just do not cut it.

This matchup is always going to be close. We don't have an effective way to clear the board, which is a huge problem that Esper has compared to Jeskai Control.

Jeskai Control

I think Jeskai is the best deck in the format by a good margin. That said, we destroy Jeskai Control. This is the reason to play this deck. Hand disruption, cheap counters and seven great ways to deal with Niv-Mizzet, (Teferi and The Eldest Reborn) that is just too much for Jeskai to deal with. Crush the best deck while you can!

Standard is still in a very fun and healthy time. Everything is powerful, you just have to make sure you have passable matchups against Golgari and Jeskai. Thank you so much for stopping by, I will see you all next week!
