Hello and welcome to another addition of Droppin' Baums! This week I am trying out a new spin on what is one of – if not the – best deck in standard right now, Jeskai Control. The problem I see with the normal control lists when we are this deep in a standard format, is the predictability of them. control decks that don't change get hated out very quickly. This is mainly why we saw such a dominant performance at the last standard GP by Golgari. The other decks have just plain and simply figured out how to beat the ABC Jeskai lists. That's why it's time for a change! This Jeskai list is much more proactive, which is where you want to be in this Standard format. The interactions with Karn, Scion of Urza and the rest of the artifacts in the deck are just fantastic. They add a level of reach that the deck just didn't have before. Before everything was about Niv-Mizzet and protecting it. If you did, you won. If you didn't, you lost. Those days are in the past! Check out this masterpiece inspired by Martin Porter.
This is a great matchup where all you want to do is answer their creatures and win the game with Niv-Mizzet. This deck is very good at doing just that!
Not too many secrets to this matchup, except the first person to blink usually loses. This is not always the case of course but a large number of games effectively end when someone gets their Teferi countered into playing their own Teferi. Don't make that mistake into open mana!
The name of the game is stay alive. If you can stay alive, which is the hard part. Winning the game is quite easy after you absorb the initial blow.
This matchup is always very close and very challenging. The better player usually wins, from either side, which is very exciting! You want to make sure you don't let Vivien Reid hit the board while simultaneously making sure you don't just die to a Carnage Tyrant. Not an easy thing to do, but very doable.
Thank you so much for stopping by! Good luck to everyone playing the invitational and GP Portland. I will be trying my hand at Modern this weekend, come and say hello!
See you next week,
