Hello and welcome to another addition of Droppin' Baums! Today we are looking at a Standard Knights list with a bit of a twist – this list also shows off some of the most powerful Angels in the format. Lyra Dawnbringer and Resplendent Angel are some of the most powerful creatures white has to offer – that's why I decided to name this beauty Holy Knights.

This is a deck that is inspired by Todd Stevens list he played against us in the Standard Super League. That being said I have to take a moment to brag for the Genesis boys. We took first place and I couldn't be more excited and proud of myself and my teammates Brian Braun-Duin, Seth Manfield, and the one and only Brad Nelson. We basically steamrolled the competition only losing one match each combined between the four of us. Had a blast doing it and I hope everyone enjoyed watching my first Super Series. Enough about that, let's check out the list!

Todddeck really took advantage against the week one strategies that people are trying out, but I'm not sure how the deck will hold up. It very well could be great moving forward, but I am just not convinced yet. That said, this deck has every element that contributes to pure power. Powerful Angels, removal and efficient early threats. Todd got very unlucky to lose to me while I was playing Zombies in the Super League.

I'll take a moment to say how overrated I think Zombies truly is – playing a deck that gets wrecked so badly to Glorybringer I think is the worst thing you could be doing right now. Red is still going to be around and you need to be prepared to beat the powerful deck. When we see four sets rotate out this will be a very different story, but for now the deck doesn't have the power to compete with Kaladesh. Let's get to the Sideboard Guide!

Sideboard Guide

Red/Black-Red Aggro

+2 Shield Mare
+1 Ixalan's Binding
+1 Angel of Sanctions

-3 Kitesail Freebooter
-1 Fatal Push

I will never say that any deck has an "easy" time against this deck. Red is like a freight train that is speeding to its final destination of rotation. It's going to smash everything in its sights until it gets to that point. But I will say that this deck can take it down with the synergies of Knights. Being able to play threat after threat that needs to be answered gives us a chance to stick a Lyra Dawnbringer effectively. That said, Glorybringer is a very big problem that demands an answer.

Control

+4 Duress
+2 Arguel's Blood Fast
+2 Ruin Raider
+1 Forsake the Worldly
+1 Ixalan's Binding

-4 Fatal Push
-2 Cast Down
-1 Walking Ballista
-2 Cast Out
-1 Lyra Dawnbringer

This is matchup that we DOMINATE. Especially since we have so many Knights that can't be dealt with very effectively. Esper can be a little bit harder since they have cheap effective black removal. Game one can be a little rough since we have a good amount of spot removal this is dead against them but when we can turn those bad removal spells into hand disruption and card advantage this becomes much much easier.

Mono Green/Black-Green Snake

+2 Plague Mare
+1 Ixalan's Binding
+1 Angel of Sanctions

-3 Kitesail Freebooter
-1 Ajani, Adversary of Tyrants

These matchups are very good. We just have so much removal for them to deal with it becomes very hard for them to snowball threats. That is really the only way those type of decks are good if they can stack some threats and have a timely Blossoming Defense to back it up. If we just have more removal spells than they have Blossoming Defenses it becomes quite easy.

White-Blue Gift

+4 Duress
+2 Arguel's Blood Fast
+1 Forsake the Worldly
+1 Ixalan's Binding
+1 Angel of Sanctions

-4 Fatal Push
-2 Cast Down
-1 Walking Ballista
-2 Lyra Dawnbringer

It doesn't matter the amount of Duress and other forms of hand disruption available, I will always think this is a very bad matchup. We just can't pressure them enough. Midrange will always have a bit of a problem against Gift since they have access to Fumigate, which is great against us while still being able to set up a game-winning combo.

Well that's the deck my friends! I want to thank you so much for supporting Dropping Baums these last few months, I have been truly feeling the love. Leave your comments below, I always love to talk to you!

See you next week,
