Now with Pioneer finally settling into its groove after the sleuth of bans late last year, there's plenty of creativity to be found. We are continuing with the theme of creating affordable gateways into Pioneer with an offensive approach in Mono-Green Stompy. "Stompy" is a long-running archetype which features efficient green creatures and powerful pump spells to win matches. Your strategy is always the same: deal as much damage as quickly as possible, which can end as early as turn four or five. Usually, green creatures have a drawback in their high power and toughness by being heavy on green mana symbols, but in Mono-Green Stompy, we can use this to our advantage by being in one color and capitalizing on spells such as Aspect of Hydra.

Green remains one of the most powerful colors in Magic: The Gathering given the numerous breaks in the color pie over the years, which as a result, creates a great starting point in Pioneer. The most significant draw to play green in the format is having access to both Elvish Mystic and Llanowar Elves, allowing you to ramp into threats faster. Mono-Green Stompy has been known as a fringe Modern strategy for years and even with the low financial commitment, Mono-Green Stompy offers a competitive edge at events. The Pioneer variant of the strategy delivers the same effect as its Modern counterpart.

The list I've created above comes to $104 and offers a solid starting point into the archetype for Pioneer. Most of the creatures are featured in current Standard which makes them easier to obtain, the only pricy exceptions being Ghalta, Primal Hunger and Steel Leaf Champion. By having access to eight mana dorks, we don't have to take Lovestruck Beast on an Adventure, and deploying an early Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig creates the potential to deal plenty of damage. As a result of deploying high-powered threats early, we can cast Ghalta, Primal Hunger way ahead of curve to pile on even more damage! Mono-Green Stompy aims to end games quickly which Ghlata and Surrak, the Hunt Caller accomplish effortlessly.






Looking ahead to Theros Beyond Death, we could see the inclusion of Nylea, Keen-Eyed as she offers a creature discount, deck filtering, and a robust body if your devotion is high enough. Klothys's Design is another for potential application. Aspect of Hydra is an absurdly powerful card within the shell, and granting this effect to your team could have enormous potential, despite Design being a sorcery. I can see Klothys's Design out of the sideboard for a huge alpha attack against other creature strategies.



Stomping Harder



Another positive from playing Mono-Green Stompy is that the core remains the same from budget to optimization; however, there are a handful of upgrades we can add to make this list a touch more competitive. There are a few routes you can go down with the archetype. With the first route, we can do like-for-like swaps with the budget list above.

A fully optimized version of Mono-Green Stompy comes $210, and the upgrades are straightforward enough. We are replacing Shifting Ceratops with Rhonas the Indomitable, removing Castle Garenbrig for Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and adding Heroic Intervention in the place of Lifecrafter's Bestiary.






Nykthos creates the potential for some explosive turns given how high our devotion to green is, which complements Burning-Tree Emissary, as the Emissary's ability offers a free activation on the legendary land. Another positive to playing a big-creature strategy is the lack of potent removal in Pioneer. Achieving revolt on Fatal Push is difficult, and Ghalta will likely stick around unless your opponent is heavy on Hero's Downfall, Assassin's Trophy or Murderous Rider. There aren't many potent sweepers outside of Supreme Verdict in Pioneer currently, and if your metagame is heavy in Azorius Control or black decks, I would recommend adding a few more Heroic Intervention to your sideboard. However, these are hovering around $15 each currently as Aether Revolt was not opened massively, and the card is seeing play in Modern.



The second route to optimizing Stompy utilizes Gilded Goose to ensure huge creatures are cast early, which discounts The Great Henge to produce insane value. This route moves further away from my budget list above, but it does incorporate plenty of what Mono-Green Stompy wants to achieve.

Reaching to a similar price at $204, this version of Mono-Green Stompy does not use the Nykthos and Burning-Tree Emissary package, but uses powerful creatures in Voracious Hydra and Questing Beast instead. The theory for using ten mana dorks makes sense within this build, as it creates a more consistent rate of deploying a turn-three threat, which means The Great Henge can be deployed faster. Ultimately it's down to you on which route you want to take. I'd recommend going with The Great Henge variant if you are intending to play more Standard, as your cards will go further. With the imminent release of Theros Beyond Death and the return of devotion, there will be an emphasis on mono-color strategies again, which means Mono-Green could be a strong feature in the upcoming Standard landscape.

Simic Stompy achieved reasonable success at a recent Pioneer Preliminary on Magic Online, utilizing the blue for disruption in Stubborn Denial and Disdainful Stroke to counter removal. The addition of Icy Blast is a neat method to push through damage when the board meets a stalemate. Although the blue splash is light, you have to reconfigure the mana base to compensate for this, which unfortunately comes at a price. With the combination of Yavimaya Coast, Breeding Pool and Botanical Sanctum it increases the value of the build by $100 which may be a tough reach for some, especially for a splash of eight cards. Admittedly, you can compensate with Hinterland Harbor over Breeding Pool in the short term until you acquire the shock lands. However, Simic Stompy could potentially be a route to take if you want to couple your aggression with some disruption.



The other potential splash is a build I've mentioned a few times within the Pioneer landscape, which is Gruul Stompy.

Coming to roughly $200, Gruul Stompy offers more than a splash by including Glorybringer and Bonecrusher Giant to encourage enormous amounts of damage. Thanks to Elvish Mystic and Llanowar Elves, this can be achieved way ahead of the curve which allows a swifter route to victory. Once again, adding the red comes at a price by including Game Trail, Stomping Ground and Rootbound Crag into the mix, which all together come to $60—which seems achievable compared to Simic. I believe Gruul will be a dominant color combination once we see Karplusan Forest come into Pioneer, which I expect to be at some point in the year, perhaps in Core 2021. Besides, I think Klothys, God of Destiny could fit right in this build once Theros Beyond Death drops. Being three mana and offering ramp as well as damage will make her a potent threat in Gruul strategies going forward.



Stomping Across Formats



As a final note, if you want a deck to offer flexibility between Pioneer and Modern, Mono-Green Stompy accomplishes this as the build is just as affordable and competitive in Modern.

Despite having to purchase a handful of commons and uncommons for the Modern variant, the price comes to $86 overall which continues to be affordable. The game plan remains the same as its Pioneer counterpart: curve out with creatures until your opponent is on zero life. In Modern, there are plenty of great and cheap threats which can be inherently powerful in the correct meta. Dryad Militant and Scavenging Ooze offer maintenance on the opponent's graveyard, while Kitchen Finks can offset life loss against aggressive strategies. The incremental value can add up throughout the match which provides you time to finish your opponent off by casting Aspect of Hydra or Rancor on your creatures to push trample damage through. Additionally, cards such as Heroic Intervention have plenty of Modern application as well as in Pioneer, which makes your cards go further.



Throne of Eldraine brought a swath of green creatures to create a potent stompy strategy in both Standard and Pioneer, and Theros Beyond Death looks to promote this concept further with a devotion subtheme. Finding the affordability to marry competitiveness can be tough, but I believe Mono-Green Stompy achieves this in both Pioneer and Modern. Green remains one of the strongest colors in Magic and having a deck with a green base is a great place to start in non-rotating formats. We will have to see if green receives any more powerful cards in the future—but for now, it's stomping time!
