When Metalfoes first debuted in The Dark Illusion they were immediately picked up by Pendulum enthusiasts looking for a reliable way to summon Majespecter Unicorn - Kirin each turn.

Metalfoes didn't have any Pendulum Summoning restrictions, and their Pendulum Scale was surprisingly wide, but more importantly the two biggest Pendulum decks in the game had just taken major hits: Performapal Monkeyboard was Forbidden in August of 2016, and Pendulum Call was Limited on the same list. Metalfoes became a much more interesting option when arguably all of the better engines were crippled by the banlist.

Fast forward to now, and Metalfoes face a new set of challenges in 2021, but they're also teaming up with new allies in Blazing Vortex. There are four new Metalfoes monsters and a new Fusion Spell in the set, including a new Link Monster to make up for Heavymetalfoes Electrumite current situation on the Forbidden List.

So can we make this work?

What's New For Metalfoes In Blazing Vortex

Metalfoes clearly need some help if they're going to be competitive again, and the new support in Blazing Vortex is a step in the right direction.

Parametalfoes Melcaster and Metalfoes Vanisher are the new Main Deck additions to the theme's monster line-up, and Parametalfoes Melcaster an especially fantastic upgrade for the strategy. Its Pendulum effect is identical to other Metalfoes monsters, but its monster effect is significantly more useful than Raremetalfoes Bismugear–at least immediately.

When Parametalfoes Melcaster destroyed on the field, including when it's destroyed in the Pendulum Zone, its effect lets you return a Metalfoes Pendulum from your Extra Deck to your hand. You can't activate that returned card later, but you can still Pendulum Summon it.

Parametalfoes Azortless is one of five Pendulum Fusion Monsters across all of Yu-Gi-Oh, and it's bringing extra firepower to the Metalfoes theme. Parametalfoes Azortless can destroy a monster when it's summoned, then pop cards from the Pendulum Zone whenever a Metalfoes card you control is destroyed by a card effect.

Those conditions are incredibly easy to trigger thanks to the effects of your Main Deck Metalfoes monsters, and getting Parametalfoes Azortless into the Pendulum Zone takes no effort at all. It's a solid option for the deck, although it won't be replacing Metalfoes Mithrilium or Fullmetalfoes Alkahest.

Speaking of Fusions, the new Parametalfoes Fusion adds a third Fusion Spell to the Metalfoes theme. This one might be the best yet. Each spell offers something unique: Metalfoes Fusion replaces itself with a draw, Fullmetalfoes Fusion is a Quick-Play Spell that lets you summon on your opponent's turn, and Parametalfoes Fusion lets you use face-up monsters in your Extra Deck as Fusion materials.

It's a great follow-up if your initial combo goes sideways, and it reduces the number of Metalfoes you need to keep in your hand. Luckily the Metalfoes engine gives you the choice of any of the deck's Fusion Spells whenever you need them. There's hardly any downside to running one copy of each, so that's the obvious choice for this build.

Combo Metalfoes In 2021

Metalfoes used to be played as a tempo-oriented strategy that slowly built up field presence thanks to the Pendulum mechanic. Those days are largely over though, thanks in part to the new rules on Pendulum Summoning.

You can't just load up your Extra Deck with Metalfoes and dump them back on the field with a Pendulum Summon anymore. To be clear, you can Pendulum Summon a bunch of monsters at once if you set up for it. From there you can consolidate your monsters into Links and Fusions with interruption effects to protect your set-up.

There are several reasons why Metalfoes work as a combo deck. First, most of the strategy's key pieces are searchable by a majority of the deck's Pendulums. Whether it's Metalfoes Volflame or Metalfoes Goldriver, you can get instant access to your Metalfoes Fusion and by extension trigger the effect of Cross-Sheep.

Second, the Pendulum mechanic gives you a huge final push for the last batch of combos. You can set up with multiple interruptions, negations, and floodgate effects thanks to one final wave of monsters. Finally, the Metalfoes Extra Deck has a handful of excellent monsters that can help you defend your set-up or pick off your opponent's cards. Fullmetalfoes Alkahest and Metalfoes Mithrilium are fantastic, and there's a good amount of value in Parametalfoes Azortless too.

The inspiration for this build was Yacine's Metalfoes list from May of last year, and for the most part the combos in his video hold up today. The biggest changes are the removal of Linkross–for obvious reasons–and the addition of the new Metalfoes cards in Blazing Vortex. There are a few points in your combos where returning a Metalfoes from the Extra Deck to your hand is helpful for pulling off bigger Pendulum Summons and Fusion Summons. Parametalfoes Melcaster a surprisingly capable addition to the deck, and Parametalfoes Fusion of course a shoe-in here.

You've probably noticed the playset of Magicians' Souls here, and I know what you're thinking. Yes, it's probably overkill to juice this casual strategy with one of the game's most expensive mass-circulation cards, but what it does here is really hard to replicate with anything else.

Magicians' Souls is a giant playmaker that takes full advantage of the Metalfoes mechanic by sending set spells and traps to the graveyard for extra draws. If you send Metalfoes Fusion to the graveyard you can recycle it for a draw, or you can send Metalfoes Combination and search a Metalfoes monster from your deck. Most of the time you'll want to send two copies of Metalfoes Combination to pick up two draws and two Metalfoes monsters, ultimately giving you four cards to work with as you continue your combo.

The rest of the picks in this deck largely make a lot more sense when you consider how important Magicians' Souls is to the combo. Magical Abductor can search Magicians' Souls after you've built up enough counters, so it's often your go-to Normal Summon. Alternatively you can summon Rescue Rabbit, summon two copies of Dragonpulse Magician, then Xyz Summon Timestar Magician and use its effect to add Magicians' Souls to your hand. Performapal Odd-Eyes Dissolver, Selene, Queen of the Master Magicians, and Odd-Eyes Vortex Dragon also exist in this build thanks to Magicians' Souls.

Here's a breakdown of an ideal combo where you start the duel with Magician's Souls and three Pendulum monsters, including two Metalfoes:

Your mileage may vary with this combo depending on which Metalfoes you started with, how many you drew with Magicians' Souls effect, and of course what sort of interaction you had with your opponent. At the conclusion of the combo your field should have Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess, Abyss Dweller, Vortex Dragon, and Metalfoes Orichalc with a set Fullmetalfoes Fusion, plus a Normal Monster somewhere between your hand and field.

During your opponent's turn you can activate Fullmetalfoes Fusion to summon Fullmetalfoes Alkahest with Metalfoes Orichalc and your Normal Pendulum monster, which you'll typically search in the End Phase with Raremetalfoes Bismugear. Metalfoes Orichalc will destroy a card when it's sent to the graveyard, and Fullmetalfoes Alkahest can steal an opposing monster on your opponent's turn.

This deck can put up an insane Turn 1 board, but like most combo strategies it's vulnerable to a lot of highly-played cards. Parametalfoes Fusion and Parametalfoes Melcaster are solid additions that add an element of recovery to the deck. It goes without saying that Heavymetalfoes Electrumite would be fantastic, and it's unfortunate that it ended up being a generic Link 2 instead of a theme-specific Link. For now, Magicians' Souls feels necessary here, although a different approach with a different engine–like Scraps, for instance–might be a more budget direction for Metalfoes post-Blazing Vortex. The theme's better than ever, even if its best monster is locked away on the Forbidden List.

Until next time then
