Standard may have only been around for a week, but there's already an elephant in the room.

Omnath, Locus of Creation and Lotus Cobra have proved to be absurdly explosive mana engines capable of generating kills as early as turn four without even entering combat. All this comes with long-game inevitability from Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Genesis Ultimatum and tons of free life gain to stave off aggressive decks.

While it's too early to declare this deck unbeatable, it is clearly the deck to beat. Let's get familiar with our target.

Spells

Your core engine is fairly simple. Omnath, Locus of Creation and Lotus Cobra both make a bunch of mana when you play extra lands, and Escape to the Wilds and Genesis Ultimatum both draw five cards and put extra lands into play. Just make as much mana as possible and cast Genesis Ultimatum or cards that draw you to Genesis Ultimatum, and repeat until you're out of mana, out of cards, or have enough extra resources to kill your opponent. The one thing to note is that a new copy of Omnath, Locus of Creation has a separate counter on how many times its landfall ability has triggered this turn, allowing you to fire off the mana and damage abilities a second time.

The main question to be answered about the archetype is what to do on turn two when you don't have a Lotus Cobra. Other ramp options exist like Gilded Goose or Ilysian Caryatid, but they just aren't capable of generating explosive later turns the way Lotus Cobra is, and your immediate curve doesn't benefit much from playing them either. It's far more crucial to ensure our opponent doesn't have a Cobra of their own that could take over the game.

Bonecrusher Giant is a great card to begin with and puts in a ton of work at shutting down aggressive starts on its own, so when it's also excellent in ramp mirrors, maindecking copies is a no-brainer.

As it turns out, you don't actually need a bunch of copies of Terror of the Peaks in your deck in order to kill immediately off Genesis Ultimatum. Simply finding more copies of Lotus Cobra or Omnath, Locus of Creation along with some lands will quickly rack up double digits of additional mana while drawing deep into your deck to keep going. Fae of Wishes finding Volcanic Salvo is the most straightforward way to close the game from that position, but Omnath, Locus of Creation triggers, Kenrith, the Returned King activations, and spare attacks can often close the game on their own. This makes Terror of the Peaks an unnecessary inclusion that also doesn't generate mana or cards to help us go off in the first place.

Felidar Retreat and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon are both good threats, but largely end up being redundant once we reach the stage of the game where we've put a bunch of lands in play, so they've been relegated to the sideboard for the matchups where they're particularly compelling. For Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, those matchups are green or white creature decks that attempt to build a board large enough to chew through our life gain, but which struggle to close the game or recover from the sweeper effect. For Felidar Retreat it's against slower interactive decks who can go after the expensive draw effects but struggle to deal with an enchantment or the endless army of 2/2s it creates. There it serves as not only an extra game-winning threat but also a relatively cheap one that dodges Mystical Dispute, making it particularly easy to force through with Disputes of our own.

Lands

If we're going to play 30 lands in our deck we need to get some amount of utility to avoid flooding out, but in this Standard that still leaves us with quite a few options to choose from. Evolving Wilds offers some conditional extra explosiveness, an extra card in the graveyard for Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, and an extra trigger for Felidar Retreat, but otherwise it's just an unexciting tap land. We can only really capitalize on the upsides if we're able to play other lands first and hold the Evolving Wilds for later turns when we have engine pieces available, so there's some substantial diminishing returns at play here on top of the Fabled Passage we're already running. The first copy makes the cut and the second is a consideration, but past that the risk starts to outweigh the rewards.

Triomes are similarly always tapped but offer substantially more value for fixing and can much more reliably cash in for actual value. Raugrin Triome is a mandatory four-of because drawing one lets us avoid searching for Plains or playing a Boulderloft Pathway, either of which can sometimes delay Genesis Ultimatum by a turn by failing to produce the appropriate colors. Ketria Triome is more negotiable since we can largely get by without its fixing if necessary, so whether you play the last couple copies is largely a function of how many tap lands you can stomach and how many MDFCs you have competing for those slots.

In the case of modal double-faced cards like Emeria's Call the question is somewhat more complicated, since each one must be evaluated largely on a case-by-case basis. They do share a common and substantial downside though, which is the fact that they aren't technically lands so Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Genesis Ultimatum are unable to put them into play. The inability to enter play off of Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath makes the cost of a tap land much higher as it's more difficult to get into play conveniently without disrupting our curve. Being a whiff on Genesis Ultimatum often costs us crucial mana on our swing turns. Due to these concerns, we want to keep the number of these we play to a minimum, and only play them if the front side is actively desirable as a card.

In this case, Spikefield Hazard justifies its spots by killing Lotus Cobra in the mirror, which sometimes bails us out of a bad spot in game one and aids our sideboard plans in the mirror, allowing us to safely shave some fairly narrow Bonecrusher Giants without running too low on answers.

Sideboard Guide

Vs. Omnath (The Mirror)

-2 Bonecrusher Giant
-1 Dryad of the Ilysian Grove
-1 Fae of Wishes
-1 Cultivate
-1 Lotus Cobra
-1 Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath
-4 Genesis Ultimatum
-1 Escape to the Wilds
-1 Island

+3 Negate
+3 Mystical Dispute
+1 Thundering Rebuke
+2 Elspeth Conquers Death
+1 Kenrith, the Returned King
+3 Felidar Retreat

The first thing to address in the mirror is Confounding Conundrum, which accomplishes very little and is not worth a sideboard slot. When your opponent plays a second land to trigger their Omnath, Locus of Creation's mana ability or resolves a Genesis Ultimatum, they do not need to keep the extra lands in play to generate a massive advantage. Instead, our focus should be on cutting off the draw spells and top end with a heavy dose of countermagic. Along those lines, we cut our own Genesis Ultimatum for threats that are more difficult to hit with Mystical Dispute or Negate, or at least easier to protect with a Mystical Dispute of our own. Lowering our curve also allows us to trim some mana sources and acceleration to account for having fewer draw spells in our deck.

With Genesis Ultimatum and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon struggling to resolve in post-board games, the emphasis largely returns to mid-game haymakers—particularly ones like Kenrith, the Returned King that are relatively cheap and dodge Negate and Mystical Dispute. This brings us to the other upside of boarding out Genesis Ultimatum, which is allowing us to freely put white sources into play without needing to cast a GGUUURR spell. This allows us to turn to Elspeth Conquers Death as an excellent answer to Kenrith, the Returned King, Terror of the Peaks, Felidar Retreat, Omnath, Locus of Creation, Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, or anything else that sneaks under the countermagic.

Vs. Mono-Red

-1 Fae of Wishes
-4 Genesis Ultimatum
-1 Cultivate
-1 Escape to the Wilds

+1 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
+1 Kenrith, the Returned King
+2 Elspeth Conquers Death
+2 Negate
+1 Thundering Rebuke

With all the life gain you have access to, it's difficult to lose to anything that isn't Embercleave on either Torbran, Thane of Red Fell or Anax, Hardened in the Forge. Lotus Cobra is extremely fragile against all the cheap red removal, so we want to place less of an emphasis on our explosive top-end turns and more on defensive plays that stop that particular combo and outclass their leftover threats with bigger creatures.

Vs. Gruul Aggro

-1 Fae of Wishes
-1 Radha, Heart of Keld
-1 Escape to the Wilds

+1 Negate
+1 Thundering Rebuke
+1 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

The green creatures are more difficult to beat on an individual basis, and their deck doesn't kill Lotus Cobra as easily, so we want to leave our top end in instead of going all-in to shut down Embercleave specifically.

Vs. Selesnya Aggro

-1 Escape to the Wilds
-1 Kenrith, the Returned King
-1 Fae of Wishes

+2 Elspeth Conquers Death
+1 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon

Selesnya is even worse at killing Lotus Cobra, so here we even have freedom to stretch the mana to attack their more expensive threats with Elspeth Conquers Death if we choose to. Whether that's actually desirable may depend on how low to the ground their list is, so don't bring ECDs in if their curve almost entirely tops out at two-drops and X spells.

Vs. Blue Aggro

-1 Fae of Wishes
-4 Genesis Ultimatum
-1 Dryad of the Ilysian Grove

+1 Negate
+3 Mystical Dispute
+1 Thundering Rebuke
+1 Kenrith, the Returned King

In general we're looking to lower our curve and rely on threats we can force through countermagic easily. These lists tend to rely on flying attackers for pressure, which is why Felidar Retreat doesn't make the cut. If their list looks slower and less evasive and you don't think they can kill you in the air very quickly, you can consider bringing in some Felidar Retreat. Alternatively, if their threats are expensive enough for Elspeth Conquers Death to consistently have a target, it's likely to be even better. In either case, typically look to shave copies of Escape to the Wilds to make room.

Vs. Blue Control

-4 Genesis Ultimatum
-1 Dryad of the Ilysian Grove
-1 Fae of Wishes
-3 Bonecrusher Giant
-1 Spikefield Hazard

+3 Negate
+3 Mystical Dispute
+1 Kenrith, the Returned King
+3 Felidar Retreat

As always, consider the Elspeth Conquers Death if your opponent is playing cards that would warrant it. Control shells largely lack proper top-end finishers in this format though, and are leaning more on cards like Shark Typhoon or Mazemind Tome for proactive plays, so I like this plan as a default.

How to Beat Omnath

Now that we've established what we need to beat, we can start entertaining options for how to do so.

Let's start with what doesn't work. Attacking is fundamentally flawed as an approach. They have too much free life gain to actually kill them with cards stranded in their hand, so we need to be able to deal with their top end—which defeats the purpose of aggression in the first place. Similarly, discard spells are fine, but the top of their deck is far too live with all the explosive draw spells and cantripping ramp spells to rely on flooding out after we take their big payoff.

Simply put, we need countermagic, and we need to be a control deck.

Dimir Control has nicer mana but lacks clean answers to a lot of Four-Color Omnath's problematic permanents like Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath and Felidar Retreat. Elspeth Conquers Death cleanly answers all the midrange threats they have to offer, and Skyclave Apparition is a solid stand-in option. Yorion, Sky Nomad pairs nicely with the two, but I don't think it's worth the added inconsistency to companion it, especially with our mana already being fairly dicey.

This mana is also responsible for us leaning heavily on Negate and Mystical Dispute as our countermagic suite even in game one, as Neutralize is too unreliable to cast early for us to play more than a copy or two. This is honestly welcome anyway, as they pair the easiest of our options with our expensive sorcery-speed removal spells, allowing us to more easily answer threats without exposing ourselves to a game-ending Genesis Ultimatum.

Rain of Revelation is an extremely undervalued card, and also can help set up nice swing turns with Elspeth Conquers Death, allowing us to get an Ugin, the Spirit Dragon or Dream Trawler into play without tapping out any further. It also gives us something to do with cards like Mystical Dispute or Negate when they're dead against creature matchups or removal like Shatter the Sky against other more controlling decks.

Archon of Emeria is somewhat experimental, but it offers a nice way to attack opposing Mystical Dispute against decks like Four-Color Omnath that are attempting to use countermagic to force through a threat. Given how top-heavy our curve is, being unable to double spell ourselves is less of a concern than preventing our opponents from overwhelming our answers with their own multi-spell turns. It may end up not being worth a card for this effect, but I want to try it and see first.

Additional Colors

Between Lavaglide Pathway, Needleverge Pathway, Raugrin Triome and Fabled Passage, it's fairly easy to play red cards at minimal cost if any of them are desirable. The only one I liked the look of was Bonecrusher Giant, which isn't quite worth it on its own, but if other desirable red cards come up we can easily accommodate them.

You could also look to incorporate Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath into the deck, but the mana for that is far less forgiving. At that point you're legitimately better off just adding red too to be an Omnath, Locus of Creation deck yourself.

This is a real option though, and a shell that looks similar to the Four-Color Control list from my article last week could easily become an appealing option if the rise of Mystical Dispute encourages people to move away from Genesis Ultimatum and toward more individual midrange haymakers.

That might look something like this:

Hopefully with a bit more time and research an answer to the Omnath, Locus of Creation decks emerges, but until then, registering anything else is likely a mistake if you value winning. If nothing else, the deck offers challenging sequencing, and the explosive turns are enjoyable for at least one person. All things considered, I'd rather that person be me.
