[Grist] is a welcome addition to the Planeswalker Deck pack for one strange reason: I already made a deck for it!

Sometimes, when planeswalkers don't point towards a specific theme or direction, I'll just pick something that seems fun, or maybe something thematically relevant to that planeswalker's color(s). This was just such a case. I'd originally decided I wanted a black/green planeswalker to be the graveyard deck, and had picked out Garruk Relentless off the flimsy reasoning that his back half kinda worked with the theme.

But now we get a much more directly enticing lightning rod for our theme, so the whole deck just gets ported over to newcomer Grist, the Hunger Tide. I'll figure out what to do with Garruk Relentless later (my initial shot from the hip involves curses…). In the meantime, let's fill up that graveyard and get wild.

The Game Plan

Step 1: Fill the Graveyard. Step 2: See Step 1. Step 3: Profit! We're looking to gain advantages from filling up the graveyard. On a base level, we get some delirium bonuses for good ol' Gnarlwood Dryad or Autumnal Gloom and threshold for Werebear (best flavor text this game has ever known, respect). We get to turn card advantage engines like Baloth Null and Golgari Findbroker into tutors, and some of our threats into enormous beaters like Undergrowth Scavenger, Nemesis of Mortals, Apocalypse Demon, and Mortivore. Oh, and there's one rare that gets turned on pretty effectively, you may have heard of it…

Most of our creatures aren't terribly strong early, but it won't take too long for them to become serviceable. As a result, unless we've got Gnarlwood Dryad early we should be spending our initial turns casting the two-mana graveyard spells—Winding Way, Grapple with the Past, Grisly Salvage, Mulch, The Binding of the Titans—to get fuel for later.

Once the graveyard is nice and fat, use some of our recursion effects to get the pick of the litter. Keep in mind that because of Grist, the Hunger Tide passive ability, Unearth can get it back into play for just a single mana. And don't be afraid to get the graveyard as full as possible. There are some scenarios where we could find ourselves getting decked I suppose, but our rares are so impactful when our yard is full, we shouldn't have a super tough time shutting the door once we find our footing and land the big one.

The removal here is great. Thrashing Brontodon and Springsage Ritual are fine disenchant effects. Executioner's Capsule, Sinister Concoction, Putrefy, Chainer's Edict, and Shriekmaw offer a fairly versatile removal suite that also plays perfectly with enabling delirium. My kingdom for a Tarmogoyf! Also keep in mind that because we can somewhat easily facilitate a full graveyard, Keeper of the Dead can become the terminator.

The Rares

Mortivore was in the sideboard of the first deck I ever used to win a tournament—Orzhov Braids, almost 20 years ago. Woof. That hurts to write. Anyway, Mortivore is primed to be enormous in this deck and it regenerates, providing us with a giant resilient threat. We'll be happy to smash with it as much now as we did in '02.

If Mortivore is big, Apocalypse Demon here is gonna be wayyyyyy bigger. With all the ways we have to dump things into the graveyard, we can very conceivably nuke an opponent with one shot. Just make sure we've got enough snacks for him, or he'll be impotent.

Very similar to the other two here, just a variation on a theme. We're going wide instead of tall. The upside is we get some badly needed lifegain and occasionally we can use the extra cards too. Remember we can use this to trigger a dredger at instant speed.

Is this the most broken card in any deck of the whole project? Maybe. Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis is a merciless killer who made Modern super miserable before its Dishonorable Discharge. But! I actually think Hogaak, Arisen Necropolis is super neat, and I can see exactly how it came to be in a design meeting. It's awesome we can only cast it by making use of resources other than mana. And the name and flavor are tight. Whatever. Sometimes you gotta play some broken ones.

Unsung Hero

I almost chose the Skull Prophet here, but regardless of which one, the principle is the same: these are creatures that dump cards in the graveyard while doing something else. Nyx Weaver even provides another creature type for delirium concerns if it dies at some point. And it functions as an Eternal Witness when the game goes late, and it's flipped something tasty into the yard. For little mana, this thing holds the fort against all but the shadowiest of attackers, fuels the graveyard for free, and cashes in to get something good (and hopefully rare) later. Nyx Weaver is an absolute workhorse, and deserving of the Unsung Hero honorific.
