As I'm writing this article, it's crunch time. There are only a couple days left until I submit my deck for the Mythic Invitational, which will be one of the biggest tournaments I've competed in recently. The format of choice? Historic.

This will be the first large-scale Invitational Historic event, put on directly by WOTC. While it's exciting to have a big event to prepare for, it's also stressful. This will be a new experience, competing at such a high level with the Historic card pool. I've been testing diligently, and want to highlight two sweet decks I've stumbled on recently.

Mono Black God-Pharaoh's Gift

God-Pharaoh's Gift is one of the recently introduced cards to the format. The card requires a deck built around it, but if you're able to abuse the card, it becomes an absolute powerhouse. For those that remember God-Pharaoh's Gift when it was legal in Standard, you likely remember it being in a White-Blue deck. However, there are multiple ways you can play with the card, and in Historic right now it seems to fit best in Mono-Black, which is totally unexpected. This is essentially Mono-Black Aggro with a twist.

The deck plays like half Mono-Black Aggro, half Mono-Black combo kill with God Pharaoh's Gift. In order to make God-Pharaoh's Gift work you need plenty of ways to fill up your graveyard with creatures, and of course Gate to the Afterlife to find the namesake card, God Pharaoh's Gift. This list played by Carolyn Cavanagh did well in a recent SCG Challenge event:

Notice the Zombie theme here. Cryptbreaker is a key part of the deck, and you generally feel good if this is your first play of the game. Being able to fill the graveyard with creatures, and then also get some card advantage by drawing cards, is a really big deal. Sometimes it's  hard to get six creatures into the graveyard without having something like Cryptbreaker, or a Gate to the Afterlife in play. You want other Zombies to make Cryptbreaker better, so it's nice that a lot of the early creatures here also happen to be Zombies.

You do play creatures that provide some self-mill, so that's another way to fill up the graveyard. Stitcher's Supplier and Mire Triton play an important role here. There's also Fiend Artisan, which is another incredibly powerful card for the deck. Not only is it likely to be a huge creature itself, it's a sacrifice outlet, and a tutor for additional creatures. The deck needs sacrifice outlets to fill the graveyard with creatures, and you often actively want to sacrifice your Stitcher's Supplier. Since the deck has Fiend Artisan, it makes sense to play some one-of creatures to be able to tutor up here.

You'll notice some unusual inclusions at the top of the curve. Cards like Massacre Wurm and Ravenous Chupacabra aren't normally seen in aggressive black decks. However, this isn't a pure aggro deck. These are good creatures to copy with a God Pharaoh's Gift trigger. If you make a copy of a creature from your graveyard, you also get the enter the battlefield trigger, and you can often find ways to get these creatures in your graveyard.

The deck runs the full playset of Phyrexian Towers, so it is realistic to hardcast a Massacre Wurm or God-Pharaoh's Gift directly from your hand. This is important—sometimes your plan isn't working perfectly, and you need back-up options. However, the primary game plan is to play Gate to the Afterlife and activate it to find the God-Pharaoh's Gift, which is going to be a more mana efficient play. Since the deck plays four Gate to the Afterlife, I like the decision to only play two copies of God -Pharaoh's Gift. You'd rather search it out of your deck than naturally draw it.

This deck hasn't been on the radar long, but my impressions so far are positive. It has the ability to grind out almost every deck in the format. In order to combat this deck you really want some type of graveyard hate, and then you still need to answer the fair creature beatdown plan of the deck. The Mono-Black Gift deck does play four Thoughtseizes in the sideboard, though, which is a great way to snag potential hate cards after sideboard.

Simic Ramp

The other deck I want to talk about, which just recently started surging in popularity, is straight Simic Ramp. We know how great Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is, but most Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath decks in Historic are three colors. Whether you're splashing Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath in your Teferi Control deck, or putting it in a Sultai Midrange deck alongside Thoughtseize, the card is all over the place. However, now it has a home in straight Simic, and this deck is a delight to play.

Ever since the deck went 10-0 in the MTG Arena Zone tournament this past weekend, I've been working on it. That's a big result, but I knew there were ways to put my own take on the deck, and work on improving it. The deck plays out like a classic ramp deck where a lot of your cards are lands, or cards that ramp out lands, but then you have a few incredibly powerful haymakers at the top of your curve. This is my list:

I'm going to start by saying that I added two lands, and am playing 30 now. The worst feeling with this deck is not hitting your land drops, and you need to continue hitting them throughout the course of the game. I'm fine with keeping hands with five lands in them—that's what you're signing up for playing this deck. I'd rather have my lands and hope to find a way to fully use them all later. The second Blast Zone and third Castle Garenbrig also provide some really nice utility. The Castle Garenbrig is super important for getting Hydroid Krasis and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger out, while Blast Zone can be removal in a pinch.

Once you choose to play 30 lands, finding the correct mix between Explore and Arboreal Grazer is tricky. This choice is going to be metagame dependent. The reason Arboreal Grazer is in the deck is to have an early blocker against aggressive creature decks. However, Explore is generally better, as it's mostly another Growth Spiral, replacing itself by drawing a card. Because these cards are interchangeable based on matchup, I've put some copies in the sideboard.

The only ramp spell getting lands out of your deck is Cultivate. Cultivate has been impressive, helping hit your land drops later in the game. In a deck often needing ten lands or more in play to win, Cultivate is essentially providing card advantage. The other card that's both ramp and card advantage is Oracle of Mul Daya. Being able to play extra lands, and put them into play directly from the top of your deck is massive. Also, being able to know what's on top is nice, as sometimes you can manipulate your draw step. Surprisingly, because it doesn't get hit by a card like Claim the Firstborn, there isn't much removal right now that deals with it.

The four drop value slot is split between Oracle of Mul Daya and Tamiyo, Collector of Tales. This deck isn't as great at abusing Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath as some others in the format, which is why there are only three copies of Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath. The card does ramp which is nice, but oftentimes it's hard to get enough cards in your graveyard to bring Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath back. That's a large part of why Tamiyo, Collector of Tales is so good, even if you don't name the right card off the plus effect. I also have Cavalier of Thorns here instead of Nissa, Who Shakes the World. It's a close decision which one is better here, but in the end it comes down to the fact that Cavalier of Thorns fills up the graveyard.

Now, let's talk about the real haymakers showcasing what the deck can do once your lands are in play. These cards are incredibly powerful, but you have to pick and choose which ones to play. If there are too many payoff cards in your deck, you'll have multiples of them stranded in your hand, without the proper ramp cards. Hydroid Krasis is a really good one because of its flexibility. Very rarely am I paying less than six mana to cast a Hydroid Krasis—often eight or ten mana. Being able to draw a ton of cards is a great way to put a game away.

Then there are Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon. I have four copies of each between the maindeck and sideboard. There will never be a time when there are four copies of each in my maindeck, though. There are matchups, like against aggressive decks, where Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is almost always game over. You cast it, minus it, and the opponent is left with nothing. This sequence happens a lot, and the fourth copy gets brought in from the sideboard quite a bit. Having your payoff card be two mana less than Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger is important too.

Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger however, is the card you want against decks with counterspells. The blue control decks can easily answer an Ugin, the Spirit Dragon with a Dovin's Veto or Absorb, but Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger is a different story. Sometimes you actually need to cast multiple copies of Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger to beat the slow and grindy decks. Since there are so few cards in the deck that impact the board, the ones you do play need to really matter—that's why there are times when you want four copies of Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger in your deck.

The nice thing about playing only three Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath is it's easy to swap them out for Grafdigger's Cage after sideboard, and still have a coherent gameplan. The counterspells in the sideboard are there for control matchups— an early answer to Narset, Parter of Veils can be really important.  I've been working on the sideboard, and will continue to, but the deck has really impressed me so far.
