Do you ever find yourself obsessed with an idea? And by obsessed, I mean really, really, really obsessed?

It's gotten to the point in the last week where an embarrassing amount of my free time has been playing solitaire with Blue-Eyes decks. Why? It started with me wanting to summon Chaos Ruler, the Chaotic Magical Dragon in a cutesy way, and from there it just spiraled out of control.

I've spent the last two weeks bugging my friend Chris with every Blue-Eyes idea in existence, trying to maximize the deck's power ceiling while keeping it cohesive and consistent. Has that been a challenge? Well, when you have literally dozens of ideas you want to try out… I'd say yes.

But now I've had hundreds of ideas; so many I've lost count, and my finger hurts from clicking my mouse so much, resolving The White Stone of Legend.

What To Do? Destroy!

The Blue-Eyes theme occupies a weird niche: it's a combo deck, but it has big boss monsters as a backup plan. Most combo decks rely on a handful - scratch that, several handfuls - of small, dare I call them "bad" cards, played together to make some ridiculous end boards. Looking way back into dueling history, who knew a bunch of mediocre cards would turn into some of the best monsters in the game thanks to Link Summoning?

Often, a hand trap or two can totally decimate a combo deck's strategy, and when that happens the deck usually has no backup plan. But Blue-Eyes doesn't necessarily have that problem. Chaos Dragon Levianeer, Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon, and Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon are three cards that exemplify that: even if you stop their effects, they're still giant bodies with a lot of ATK.

Raw ATK power aside, Blue-Eyes decks have the capacity to… just keep going… and going… and going. It's like the infamous Dragon Link deck, but flavored in a slightly different way. Instead of Rokket monsters, it's Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon and friends saving the day with laser beams to the tune of 3000 ATK.

Figuring out what to do with this type of deck is relatively simple, because you can 1) spam summons, 2) abuse Level 8 monsters, and 3) leverage the unique Blue-Eyes support cards, so it's usually pretty easy to see what your most readily available end boards should be. You're pigeonholed into a specific suite of cards, but that's, not… a bad thing? Because you wind up covering a vast spread of situations.

Step 1: Spam Monsters

Let's get right into it: virtually every monster in the deck is multi-purpose, and that's what fascinates me about playing Blue-Eyes. Your primary directive may change depending on which cards you start with, but at the end of the day you'll always finish with either lots of attack power on the table, or enough monsters for to make a big board featuring Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres, Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess, or Saryuja Skull Dread. Two of those Links are finishers you'll play once you've done everything else, while the other is a stepping stone to your final board.

The same thing can be said about Crystron Halqifibrax, Dragunity Knight - Romulus, and even the Guardragons. I hate the term "Link Climbing," but Blue-Eyes decks do such a great job of swarming the field with monsters you might as well use them to your advantage. There are times where you'll have five monsters on board with even more cards in hand.

Take Chaos Dragon Levianeer for example. Honestly, I'd play it if it were just a free body, but if you use its effect and revive The White Stone of Legend, that one play compounds into so many cards it's ridiculous - you wind up making plays with Guardragons and Crystron Halqifibrax, and you'll have some copies of Blue-Eyes White Dragon left over in your hand.

It's extremely satisfying to resolve The White Stone of Legend six times - yes, I said that right, SIX TIMES - in one turn. Putting back three copies of Blue-Eyes White Dragon with Saryuja Skull Dread just to search them all again is an amazing feeling… and everything kinda feels like that in this deck.

My only big advice is this: don't summon monsters just "because you can". Dragunity Knight - Romulus and Saryuja Skull Dread are great at getting you to combo pieces you need, but if drawing extra cards or playing Dragon Ravine won't actually help you advance your position, you're usually better off just cutting your losses and moving onto the next step.

Another good example is Chaos Emperor, the Dragon of Armageddon: it's great getting you back a banished Dragon and then placing itself on the field, but you don't want to use that effect without a firm plan. Chaos Emperor, the Dragon of Armageddon has multiple effects and you could definitely "herp derp use all of them," but sometime's it's better used as a discard with Dragon Ravine or Trade-In depending on your situation.

Step 2: Use… Level 8… Monsters?

Thanks, brain. That was topnotch step naming, there.

Playing a Blue-Eyes deck opens up the chance to play a wide variety of monsters, but the choices I've usually seen most are probably the more boring options. Number 100: Numeron Dragon great for making a swift OTK, but it's not as versatile going first, and, I dunno, my sentiment is "blegh." I'm aware that Number 97: Draglubion puts a lethal combo at your fingertips, but it was almost never relevant. You have the brute force covered, and Draglubion was more fun in my version of Machina anyways.

Instead, there are three options that cover what Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess and Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres don't, and if bouncing a card and a free negate somehow fails, these three should do the trick.

Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy, Divine Dragon Lord Felgrand, and Number 90: Galaxy-Eyes Photon Lord all counter different threats. Number 38: Hope Harbinger Dragon Titanic Galaxy blocks attacks and spells, Felgrand protects your monsters and stops opposing effects, while Number 90: Galaxy-Eyes Photon Lord stops monster effects from hurting you.

There are other Rank 8 Xyz, but these are the most generic monsters that stop the biggest threat you'll run up against - other monsters. We live in a world largely controlled by monster effects, and depending on how dominant your starting hand is, you could easily have five negates on board after a flurry of Level 8s.

Personally, that's why I think Galactic Spiral Dragon, Chaos Ruler, the Chaotic Magical Dragon, and Chaos Emperor, the Dragon of Armageddon are so important to the deck. If your opponent stops one or two of your plays, you'll still claw your way back with a sizable board.

Eventually your opponent will just run out of cards, right?

Step 3: Play Some...Blue-Eyes… Cards?

Someone needs to help me come up with catchy names here.

So the other two steps are pretty universal in monster spam decks, but the final touch for Blue-Eyes is Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon. While things like Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion and D.D. Crow are all the rage shutting down graveyards, Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon controls the graveyard in big monster form.

The other effects are icing on the cake, but access to a big defensive wall that stops a graveyard effect each turn is no laughing matter. I can't overstate just how gridiron tight Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon makes the deck, effectively cutting off a vital part of most strategies. Building on the previous steps is good, but Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon the real conclusion you're aiming for.

Since Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon needs a Blue-Eyes monster to work, the full package isn't complete without actually having Blue-Eyes cards. That shouldn't be surprising since we're talking about a Blue-Eyes deck, but let me drive that point home: if you don't try to finish your boards with Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon, you might as well play a different deck entirely.

It's that good.

Ultimately, I'd like to have all six controlling monsters on the board at the same time, but it's often out of your control. You'll need to make Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres or Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess using Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon as a material, then have a way to revive it from the graveyard, but that's pretty dependent on luck.

You want to shoot for the moon, but without Monster Reborn, World Legacy Succession, or The Chaos Creator, you can't get all of it together at once.

Oh well.

Bad Cards, Easy Access

I'll admit, there are a handful of cards here that are situational. Drawing certain cards out of order can be a problem, not only because you won't have search targets later on, but because it compromises your opening hand.

That's why I had to skip a lot of fun cards like Blue-Eyes Abyss Dragon and Dragon Spirit of White. Those cards can be effective under the right conditions, but I wanted to accomplish a very specific end board, and that meant I didn't have room for fluff. Here's what the final deck wound up looking like.

To strengthen a somewhat brittle glass cannon, it was necessary to prioritize a lot of cards that can turn bad hands into good, especially if other things fall through. The summoning requirements and level of Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon actually make it an awkward fit for this deck, but sometimes reviving The White Stone of Legend is so good that it can turn a poor hand into a usable one, and that has big value here.

Same thing for Dragon Ravine and Dragunity Knight - Romulus. Are they necessary? No, but sending a The White Stone of Legend, The White Stone of Ancients, or Galactic Spiral Dragon to the graveyard can be make or break. One for One, Return of the Dragon Lords, Trade-In…honestly, I'd rather leave them out, but the deck suffers without them.

Ironically enough, I thought Bingo Machine, Go!!! would be much better than it turned out to be in testing. Don't get me wrong, certain decks basically require it, but not every Blue-Eyes deck is built the same. I wanted to include it, as well as cards to search with it, but the deck's already at 45 cards as-is and we just don't anymore space. Honestly, half of my brain power goes to figuring out what to do with the second Blue-Eyes Alternative White Dragon already.

Technically, The Sky's The Limit…

As much as I love this deck, every time I play it, I'm itching to do more, and there's a lot you can do to pivot the strategy. Blue-Eyes Abyss Dragon is a card I absolutely adore, and with it, you can easily play Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon or Borreload Fusion Dragon, let alone Predaplant Verte Anaconda.

If you really want to make True King of All Calamities, Trishula the Icy Dragon of Imprisonment really easy to summon and combines with Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon to make True King of All Calamities for an easy victory.

The rabbit hole goes really deep on this one. Stuff like Cards of Consonance, Ruins of the Divine Dragon Lords, and Blue-Eyes Solid Dragon almost made the cut. Don't even get me started on the whole World Legacy rabbit trail I went down…

All that said, I think the list above does what I want it to do, troubleshooting threats and not sticking you with too many dead cards in the process. I know, it may be a buzzkill to hype up some crazy strategies and not deliver that build, but think of it as encouragement; there are so many untapped Blue-Eyes decks you could make if you want to explore some different builds.

Speaking of…

Budget For Days

Blue-Eyes White Dragon builds aren't cheap, so I wanted to give a shoutout to a budget version too, one that's fun and not overly ambitious. With that in mind, I want to build on one of the easiest and most straight forward starter combos.

The approach here strips down everything else and focuses on the "main" combo. I say "main" in quotes, because it looks a lot like Dragon Link, but the end goal isn't the same and everything's pared down to keep it wallet friendly.

This isn't just a machine to turbo out Saryuja Skull Dread. Rather, it's optimized to set you up for your plays, and yes, Saryuja Skull Dread one of those starter combos that can kick everything off; technically you can make it with JUST The Melody of Awakening Dragon and Sage with Eyes of Blue, and it's important to memorize the play sequence for both the budget and non-budget builds.

You haven't used Guardragon Pisty and Guardragon Elpy effects yet, and you'll have four dragons on board with more to come. Make Synchros, Rank 8s, Saryuja Skull Dread, or do some Link climbing. There's a lot of wiggle room with this concept, but no matter how budget you go, I'd suggest you run at least those cards.

Budget? I Meant It

Thankfully, the core components of this deck are pretty budget friendly. It's a tad frustrating that so many Rank 8s are expensive right now, but you don't need to wow your opponent with multiples of them to punch above your wallet's weight class.

You'll have to make some substitutions depending on how much you want to spend. The Rank 8s are the big ticket items, but you'll realize pretty quickly that you can do alright cobbling together whatever you have. Do you really need Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess? Not necessarily, but it's definitely that or Hieratic Seal of the Heavenly Spheres. I opted to play both in the non-budget build because it's one of the better places to spend your money, and the Apollousa, Bow of the Goddess reprints are pretty cheap.

Starleige Seyfert isn't an absolute must because Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon basically works in its stead. Don't have Return of the Dragon Lords? Swing of Memories is functionally the same card, especially if you're targeting Blue-Eyes monsters to make Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon.

It's always nice to know that even the budget version of the deck accomplishes what you need to do, even if it's missing a few bells and whistles.

Just remember: beat your opponents before they beat you.
