So… Aliens. Yeah, a deck that's never gained much traction and largely lived in the shadows of just about everything else, Aliens have been as far off the radar as anything could be.

And in terms of forgettable archetypes, Reptiliannes are scraping the bottom of the barrel too. But both themes revolve around the under-played and under-supported Reptile type, so while we're at it, we might as well throw them both together, right?

The Alien and Reptilianne themes don't really conflict much, and they find a lot of synergy by virtue of their two new Link Monsters: Alien Shocktrooper M-Frame and Reptilianne Echidna. Sure, Reptilianne Echidna restricts you to summoning Reptiles for the turn, but between Cosmic Fortress Gol'Gar, Reptilianne Hydra and King of the Feral Imps, I think you'll be just fine.

You might've noticed, but a little bit of everything has been topping Regional Qualifier events over the last few months. We saw so much rogue success in the last format; I feel like it's confirmation that everything is on the table. Master Rule 5 is now a thing, so you don't need to use your Extra Monster Zone for Synchro and Xyz Monsters. That unlocks a lot of new decks all on its own, and we were already starting from a good place.

Beyond the rogue track record of last format and Master Rule 5 now, a new Forbidden & Limited List has arrived and to top it off, there's no deck data for big tournaments right now. I'm very convinced that using rogue decks with powerful plays, even if they're a bit random, can succeed on a competitive level right nw.

So… what do Alien and Reptilianne decks do? Simple: Alien decks use A-Counters to weaken, destroy, and control cards on the field while Reptiliannes drop the ATK of monsters to 0. That lets you overwhelm those monsters in battle or flat out destroy them. Sure, these two themes have been underused for more years than I can count, but that only gives you a creative edge, using niche card effects to your advantage when your opponents won't see them coming.

Take a look at the deck below and familiarize yourself with the cards I'm using today. Not every Alien and Reptilianne card made the cut for this build, but the deck's still full of surprises with plenty of graveyard recursion, monster destruction, and even some unique ways to rake in extra cards!

The Extra Deck also includes 1 Reptilianne Hydra.

I've been really excited playing around with this deck because it puts so many great cards at your disposal and virtually no one knows what they do.

Cosmic Fortress Gol'Gar bounces spells and traps while destroying cards. Alien Telepath is a recursive spell and trap destroyer. Code A Ancient Ruins gets free monsters turn after turn… There's so much going on here and your opponent just doesn't anticipate any of it. What's not to love?

Snake In The Grass
You may be asking why I'm spotlighting such a strange mash-up, but the answer's pretty simple - no one has any idea what we're supposed to be playing right now. Sure, if you have a 1-card combo that ends with Number 88: Gimmick Puppet of Leo and ends the duel in three turns, then fine, play that. But in these times of uncertainty rogue decks thrive.

Specifically, rogue decks that go second thrive in an uncertain field. Seeing that extra card when you're on the draw is monumentally important because it dictates the swing of the battle; reacting is better than being proactive when the entire game's a giant question mark. If you don't know what you're playing against, setting up an unbreakable board might be a fool's errand because there are just so many things to defend against. You're trying to cover too much ground and you'll ultimately fail.

It's like inviting ten random people over to dinner. Between allergies and food preferences, you can't please everyone. There's no way to establish the perfect Turn 1 set-up when no one knows what the heck is going on!

Not only are there fringe benefits to going second, this deck absolutely thrives on the draw and totally eats monsters like they're nothing. Baring a field full of unbeatable negations, Aliens and Reptiliannes see opposing monsters as fodder and nothing else. So go ahead and let your opponent have their big monsters. Let's start with some devastating combos to show how easy it is to rip apart a full field.

Start with Rescue Rabbit, Mausoleum of White, Reptilianne Lamia and any spell or trap. Let's say your opponent has four monsters.

-Normal Summon Rescue Rabbit and banish it to summon two Alien Shocktroopers, then Special Summon Reptilianne Lamia and drop a monster to 0 ATK

-Link Summon Reptilianne Echidna using both Alien Shocktroopers and drop a second monster to 0 ATK. Echidna searches for both Alien Ammonite and Reptilianne Vaskii

-With Mausoleum of White, Normal Summon Alien Ammonite to revive Alien Shocktrooper, then Link Reptilianne Lamia and the Reptilianne Echidna into Alien Shocktrooper M-Frame for a bigger monster! In this combo, you don't need to pitch a card from your hand to distribute A-Counters

-Now Special Summon Reptilianne Vaskii by tributing both the monsters with 0 ATK and use Vaskii to pop a monster on the field. Follow that up by Synchro Summoning Cosmic Fortress Gol'Gar and setting that spell or trap you started with, then bounce both of your non-monster cards to add some A-Counters to the field… only to remove them and destroy your opponent's last monster!

With those four monsters out of the way you control more than 7000 damage, and that's just one way the combo could go. Other options? Instead of searching Reptilianne Vaskii you could deal with your opponent's monsters with Reptilianne Hydra instead and draw cards along the way. There's a lot of room to explore here.

Big Monsters? Scales? What?
Popping monsters left and right isn't the only thing this deck can do - when you start to consider factors like Dark Factory of Mass Production, you can effectively search Pendulum Scales and likewise deal with huge monsters in battle.

Consider starting with Rescue Rabbit and Mausoleum of White, but this time with Dark Factory of Mass Production.

-Normal Summon Rescue Rabbit and banish it to Special Summon thse two Alien Shocktroopers from your deck

-Link Summon Reptilianne Echidna and drop a monster to 0 ATK, and while you're at it, search another Reptile from your deck

-Use your second Normal Summon for Alien Ammonite, reviving Alien Shocktrooper but immediately Synchro Summoning into Cosmic Fortress Gol'gar

-Mausoleum of White sends Metalfoes Volflame straight from the deck to your graveyard, but Gol'Gar can bounce Mausoleum so you can do the exact same thing again for a 1400 ATK boost. That makes Gol'gar beefy enough to run over just about anything in battle

-If you kept Dark Factory of Mass Production in the back of your mind, consider what else Mausoleum of White sends to the graveyard. If you you load up Metalfoes Goldriver, that's a high and a low Scale for Pendulum Summons. Factor in Qliphort Scout and you've basically summoned a free Cyber Dragon Infinity, plus that monster you searched with Reptilianne Echidna!

Sure, some of these combos might not be hugely elaborate, but they're ttally unexpected and you always have a strong back-up plan of lockdown monsters. Note that this build also runs Union Carrier and Dragon Buster Destruction Sword for those times you're forced to go first. I'd say that Cyber Dragon Infinity, backed up with Union Carrier and equipped with Dragon Buster Destruction Sword locking your opponent's Extra Deck is a pretty hard combo for most decks to overcome, right?

Good Against… Everything?
The biggest weakness this deck has is backrow heavy decks like Altergeists, but I'd argue this deck's strong against any deck that can spit out monsters - whether it be Dragon Link spam, Thunder Dragons, or any kind of Drop100MonstersOnBoard.dek.

Outside of the ability to eat up whatever endless hoard of monsters your opponent accumulated, you'll also have the surprise factor on your side since most of your cards are unknown to the modern player and many have secondary effects that are easy to miss even if your opponent borrows the card to read it.

The synergy between Alien Shocktrooper M-Frame and Cosmic Fortress Gol'Gar isn't readily apparent since most players are so used to hard once-per-turn effects. But Gol'Gar's ability is once per turn while it's face-up on the field, so you can use its effect to pop a card, Link Summon into Alien Shocktrooper M-Frame to throw some counters around, then pop M-Frame with a Metalfoes monster to revive Cosmic Fortress Gol'Gar and use its effect again. Plays like that largely aren't possible these days because cards just aren't designed to allow it anymore.

Additionally, keep in mind that the ATK drops of Reptilianne Echidna and Reptilianne Lamia aren't limited to the end of the turn. If your opponent lets them go through, by choice or because they have no ways to stop you, you can wind up buying yourself a lot of time. Sure, Reptilianne Vaskii pushing your plays up a few notches is great, but Lamia and Echidna do the job just fine.

Just remember: beat your opponents before they beat you.

-Loukas Peterson
