I'm not saying I expected Magistus to be bad, but I will say I'm pleasantly surprised when a deck I like is… actually good?

I'm not sure how else to say it. My insatiable desire to make things crazy and innovative, combined with my love of the most random themes in Yu-Gi-Oh, often means my favorite decks aren't always exactly Tier 0 in the competitive landscape.

Remember +1 Fire Fists? I'd rather blind myself with hot magma rather than ever see another +1 Fire Fist Profile ever again.

Point is, I'm doubly excited for a theme that I love when it's actually good. And I don't mean that it's like, baseline functional; I mean the deck can legitimately compete. I know, I know, I set the bar pretty low for what I like. But sometimes there are real standards.

All that said, I'm fully aware that Magistus is punching below its weightclass when you compare it to the Live☆Twin and Drytron themes. But as the weakest archetype of the Genesis Impact bunch, I still have to say Magistus is 1000 times better than strategies with similar positioning in deck builder sets, like the Rikka.

I made that joke last week but I'm pretty sure people still don't know what Rikka is. My friend Chris does, and I've played several matches against him, but I keep forgetting what all the cards do. So yeah.

What Exactly Are These Magical Things?

The short story, and I mean extremely short version of the story, is that most of the "magical" themes in Yu-Gi-Oh - stuff like Endymion, Witchcrafter, and Prophecy - all kinda knew each other in the past, and the Magistus theme's a team-up they all had before they went their separate ways. Some of these characters live on Witchcrafter Bystreet, some try to teach dogs and cats how to do magic, and some eventually go crazy and turn into Invoked Caliga.

Ya know, pretty normal stuff.

Lore and backstory aside, the Magistus cards do something that doesn't make any sense when you take your first crack at reading them. Want to arbitrarily use Extra Deck monsters as Equip Spells to fuel random shenanigans? Maybe my brain's still stuck in old school Yu-Gi-Oh, but I still haven't gotten over Plunder Patrol making up fake rules about summoning Extra Deck monsters.

Magistus has four Main Deck monsters and a single Xyz, Fusion, Link, and Synchro monster apiece. The Main Deck monsters are all Level 4, one's a Tuner, you can search a fusion spell, you get the gist; everything "works" together. At first, I thought the deck was a bit tepid.

But hey, now I'm obsessed with Magistus enough to give it three spots in my Top 10 from Genesis Impact article. If that discussion was just, "what does Loukas want from Genesis Impact," it might have been nine Magistus cards and a lone Knightmare reprint. But I understand if you're not all-in on Magistus… yet.

The Gift That Keeps on Giving

The glaring issue with Magiusts is that there isn't a single starter card that can dominate your opponent. Sure, Zoroa, the Magistus of Flame turns into an easy Rank 4 Xyz or a Level 8 Synchro, but the tricky thing about playing Magistus is accepting that there are a variety of ways to get to similar destinations, despite the theme having virtually no powerful 1-card combos.

No 1-card combos?! What is this, Yu-Gi-Oh in 2009?

Winning is largely a grind game, and it works as long as you can get to your starter cards first. And while Magistus may struggle a bit on their own, plenty of hand traps and some Dogmatika cards can back you up and help you end on multiple negations. Here's what my latest build looks like.

To have some semblance of a good deck, you'd really like your Magistus cards to benefit you in some capacity. Let's start with a sample hand of Zoroa, the Magistus of Flame, Magistus Invocation, Rilliona, the Magistus of Verre, and Magicians' Souls. Virtually any handful of Magistus cards works for plays like this, but I wanted to show off Magicians' Souls and what it does for this build. It really adds an extra wow factor to the deck.

I'll stress the point again - that's not the only way to achieve a board full of negates and counters, it's just one of the cleanest. Keep in mind the Magistus cards all either search something, field themselves for free, and/or accumulate more resources, so most of your hands will be playable as long as you can tap into Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden.

Take a hand of random Magistus cards and you'll no doubt have something to work with.

Take Me To Church

I'm not blind to the fact that Magistus aren't perfect, but thanks to Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden, the deck's core function flourishes even in a vacuum. Because Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden is so easy to summon, your worst case scenario is that you'll field her and make some sort of a splash in spite of your opponent's resistance.

Since any of your Magistus monsters make Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden, you've fulfilled the requirements for Dogmatika Ecclesia, the Virtuous. Obviously your play won't be to summon Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden, Special Summon Dogmatika Ecclesia, the Virtuous and pass. But the Dogmatika monsters will be a perfect capstone to literally any of your plays no matter how far you get into any combo.

Think about how much value a single Nadir Servant adds, snowballing into a huge economic profit that compounds Extra Deck monsters in your graveyard turn after turn. Backing up Aiwass, the Magistus Spell Spirit with Dogmatika Punishment and Dogmatika Fleurdelis, the Knighted is pretty scary. You won't always have Magicians' Souls for the combo I described, but Nadir Servant and Dogmatika Ecclesia, the Virtuous are functionally the same.

Don't get me wrong, adding Dogmatika isn't a revolutionary idea. It's not as boorish as some other overused cards like Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon, sure, but we're not reinventing the wheel by throwing in some Dogmatika cards. I'd rather up the ante a bit by adding in Magicians' Souls.

Why? Well, Magistus plays a decent numbers of cards that you don't necessarily want to see all the time. Whether you're drawing Magistus Vritra or Magistus Invocation at the wrong time, having the option to refresh your hand is a lifesaver.

Couple that with the fact that Magistus monsters will almost always have something attached as a material, Magicians' Souls means your dead hands won't be so bad after all. To some degree, it's a backup plan for a backup plan for a backup plan.

Furthermore, sending a high-Level Spellcaster straight from your deck to the graveyard with Magicians' Souls means Ninaruru, the Magistus Glass Goddess basically searches Spellcasters from your deck. Ninaruru, the Magistus Glass Goddess obviously gets back Magistus monsters, but yarding Dogmatika Maximus or Dogmatika Fleurdelis, the Knighted just to get one of them back?

I call that a win.

There Are No Rules

I'd be remiss in my duties if I didn't shout out my favorite Spellbook deck, Rank 4 Spellbooks. Magistus are perfect for the strategy because… well… they're all Level 4 monsters, most of which facilitate the Special Summoning of other Level 4 Spellcasters.

In other words, water is wet.

Using small packages of Magistus cards could easily take off, and the three biggest reasons for that are Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden, Zoroa, the Magistus of Flame, and Rilliona, the Magistus of Verre.

Artemis, the Magistus Moon Maiden should be obvious. You may be limited to just using Spellcasters, but it's like "Hey, what if Salamangreat Almaraj was better?" Zoroa, the Magistus of Flame might require you to use other Spellcasters to maximize your potential to profit from those cards, but it's effectively like a better Masked Chameleon.

Rilliona, the Magistus of Verre harder to pin down as a better version of something else, because at least theoretically, she works in a lot of ideas. Normal Summon Rilliona, the Magistus of Verre and search Magistus Invocation if you want to go the Fusion Summon route. Search Magistus Vritra, and your Rilliona, the Magistus of Verre turns into two monsters on the field.

I'm all about combining random parts of different themes together, but I really think Magistus has the potential to take off in a bunch of different directions. The least generic Magistus card is probably Magistus Theurgy, but with Rilliona, the Magistus of Verre, I can't even make that claim. I'm looking forward to what else we as a community can come up with for this underrated theme.

Just remember: beat your opponents before they beat you.
