With the release of Kaldheim, the new Standard format is officially underway. We are starting to see a new metagame form, filled with brand new strategies and archetypes aiming to overthrow the old gauntlet of Dimir Rogues, Gruul Aggro, and Mono-Green Food.

Perhaps the hottest new deck in the format is Izzet Flash, and it's also the one that has impressed me the most so far. It does of course have some cards that were already in the format, but it has been a while since a straight Izzet deck had a ton of success in Standard.

This is a version played by Nathan Steuer from this past weekend, where he went undefeated in a Standard Challenge:

If you play with or against the Izzet Flash deck, you should expect to see something very similar to this.

How the Deck Wins

This deck has excellent, cheap reactive cards, but then once it turns the corner and starts playing its own threats, games can end very quickly. Between Frost Bite and Bonecrusher Giant you hope to pick off the first creature the opponent plays, if they are an aggressive deck, as the only real hole the deck has is when an opposing deck has a really fast start that you can't answer.

Saw it Coming

Once you reach turn three or so it's usually possible to manage with your countermagic. Playing the deck isn't easy because there aren't enough counters for everything, so pick and choose your battles. As long as you aren't being pressured too much, you buy yourself time, and that's when you can start deploying win conditions.

Having a threat to play at the end of the opponent's turn is key. If your opponent decides not to play into a potential counterspell, you can play Brazen Borrower or cycle Shark Typhoon to put pressure on the opponent. This is what makes this a flash deck. If you are playing against Izzet Flash I don't recommend playing around countermagic for this reason—you have to jam your threats and hope to fight through the counters.

When Izzet does tap out on its own turn, it's usually for a card like Goldspan Dragon. The Dragon is so strong that you can generally afford to leave the shields down when you play it, and try to get the game over with. The first Dragon often dies, but the Treasures it leaves behind ensure you always have enough mana after that. In case there weren't enough ways to close out games there are also some copies of Faceless Haven, so in the late game there are plenty of threats to get the job done.

Core Cards

Brazen Borrower - This is a familiar face for Flash decks. There are still plenty copies of Shark Typhoon running around in the format, and Brazen Borrower is the best answer to opposing tokens. Plus, if you bounce an opposing threat, that gives you another chance to counter it.

Shark Typhoon - Shark Typhoon has become a staple card for any blue deck looking to play a long game. It's a threat that you can deploy whenever you like, it draws a card, and it can cash it in early in the game to help hit land drops. Add that all up, and you've got a card you're never sad to draw.

Goldspan Dragon - This is an amazing threat, and probably the strongest card in the entirety of Kaldheim for Standard play.

Bonecrusher Giant- Bonecrusher Giant remains a generically great removal spell that gives you some card advantage.

Saw it Coming - Here is your best counterspell because of its flexibility. You'll foretell it quite a bit.

Behold the Multiverse - Control decks need ways to get ahead as the game progresses. This is the new Glimmer of Genius. Drawing cards to find what you are looking for is great, but having two foretell cards in your deck also keeps the opponent guessing which one you have.

Frost Bite - The reason to incorporate snow lands is this card. One mana to deal 3 damage is kind of amazing value.

If you play Frost Bite, the snow lands must come along too, but you really aren't losing much by having them. Fabled Passage is an easy inclusion because it can search for snow lands, and you don't need all your lands to be snow, so Riverglide Pathway is still necessary.

Optional Cards

There are a lot of staples and four-ofs in this deck, but that doesn't mean there aren't some flexible slots you can play around with. In my opinion these are the cards that aren't totally necessary.

The question becomes what mix of counters you want after Saw it Coming. This list has 10 counters in the maindeck, which is quite a bit, especially since the only one you are likely to use before turn three is Essence Scatter.

However, the decision of which counters you do want to include is going to be based on the metagame. If we move toward an aggressive creature-based format, Essence Scatter is a higher priority. On the flipside, Negate looks better in slower formats, where control decks are more relevant. Having a mix like this is okay early on in the format, though you will often end up siding out some of these counters after sideboard.

I don't consider Shatterskull Smashing a freeroll, like some people do. The 3 damage it can deal you does absolutely hurt, and it's also not a snow land. Managing the number of these you want is important, and I'm glad this list doesn't have four copies.

Playing a land that only taps for colorless is a little bit dangerous in a deck with double blue and double red. I'm not saying not to play it at all, but like Shatterskull Smashing, managing the number of copies is important.

Sideboard Options

More Countermagic

There are going to be even more counters in the sideboard inevitably. Some decks in the format, like the Yorion strategies, play very few targets for cards like Frost Bite. You have to play very long games against those decks, and countermagic makes that possible.

More Removal

Similar to how you need more countermagic for some matchups, against creature decks you need more removal. These aren't all the removal options, as there are a lot of burn spells floating around. Still, these are some of the best ones, and I like having some diversity here in terms of which ones you elect to play.

Escape Cards

If Dimir Rogues didn't exist these wouldn't be in the sideboard. It's rare that you will bring these in for other matchups. However, they are so good against Rogues that you do want some number of them right now.

"

This is some nice graveyard disruption, especially against opposing escape threats.

Finally, there are a few value plays I have seen pop up in lists here and there.

Nathan had a very good list, and mine is very similar to his. I have one additional Frost Bite, as I do believe the card is too strong not to play four copies of. I also have a slightly different manabase, and one less Disdainful Stroke. My list is better against creature decks, and slightly worse against control, because of a bit more removal in exchange for counters.

My sideboard is also different, with a bit more diversity. In terms of the escape cards, I don't think you need five of them. I have been happy enough with three. The games against Rogues normally go long, and give you enough time to find one of them. There is one copy of Graven Lore, which has been sweet for me as an extra card advantage punch. Soul Guide Lantern is nice against the Rakdos decks that have been popping up.

Flash Forward

Izzet Flash will be a tier 1 archetype going forward. I have already heard some great players claim that it is the best deck in the format. The deck is tough to attack because of how powerful its late game is for a two-color deck. Even the decks that are three or four colors can't compete with its late game. It's also just tough to play against because of all the instant speed plays it can make—there's a reason it's called Izzet Flash.

The deck's biggest vulnerability in my opinion is hyper aggressive decks. I expect to see decks like Boros and Mono-Red Aggro pop up more to try to beat it before it has a chance to deploy its resources. The only mass removal is Storm's Wrath after sideboard, so going wide with creatures is a viable plan against this deck.
