For the most part, although these decks have different themes and mechanics they try to highlight, the entries in this project are mostly trying to win the same way: attacking for damage. After all, it's by far the most common way to win a game of Magic. However, there are a few ways to win a game that don't involve the Red Zone. Jace, Memory Adept happens to focus very clearly on one of those exceptions.

M12 happens to be one of the few sets where I barely played any Magic whatsoever. (I was at school and didn't have the time.) But I've heard tell of Jace's absolute misery status as a Limited nightmare. It got plenty of time to shine in Standard as well, albeit in sideboard space as a dedicated Control Mirror wrecking ball.

This Jace cares about one thing, and one thing only: milling people out. So let's do that.

Prepare to embrace the grind(stone):

The Game Plan

A shocking number of our creatures are walls or otherwise have defender. That's because we aren't looking to close out the game quickly, and we're not looking to get there through damage either. As such, blocking is very much on the menu. And thanks to Doorkeeper, that defender keyword puts in some extra work for us by enabling another milling outlet.

Our goal is to remove our opponent's library as fast as we can, putting our other efforts into defense until we've got 'em decked. Jace's Erasure is one of our best turn 2 plays, as it can start putting in mills for each draw we get after. Keep in mind that it works especially well when combined with Weight of Memory and any of our other little cantrips. Sage's Row Denizen is another card we'd love to see in the early turns, as it has fairly steep diminishing returns after that and its body won't often be terribly relevant for combat. The two Crabs are similarly desirable early plays.

Beyond that, it's just milling. Whether it's the adventure side of Merfolk Secretkeeper, Wall of Lost Thoughts, Mind Sculpt, Stream of Thought (hopefully replicated more than once!), Dreadwaters, or some of our Rares, we'll have the ability to mill our opponents out quickly. And the Defender Brigade, with a timely Propaganda, can help stave off enemy aggression until victory is ours.

We don't have removal as much as we have ways to buy time. There are a few counterspells of course, although Thought Collapse is our only "hard" counter, while Historic all star Memory Lapse and former EDH trump Hinder simulate the effect for us because of our various mill effects. Beyond that, Repulse and Repel are the best bets to get something off the board, and Propaganda can tie up resources on the other side if they're so determined to beat us down. Remember, all we need to do is buy some time until the mill effects go to work.

The Rares

Raven's Guild Master

You might notice that there's a Rogue's Passage in our lands, which I'll admit is at odds with a deck so heavily invested in walls. But it's there for this little fella, who packs a massive wallop when he connects. Exiling the top 10 cards is steep, and gives us more bang for our buck than any other singular mill spell we have access to. He is fragile, but if he hits we're in great shape for a victory.

Time for another edition of "Who's That Judgment Rare?" One very crucial note for Scalpelexis is that it does not have any qualifiers or restrictions on the cards it counts when it exiles. This means that basic lands are counted, and in a project with lots of mono-colored decks as well as a very high basic land count in almost every deck, Scalpelexis has the potential to just go off. The 1/5 body is very solid for a deck that's interested in blocking.

Okay, yes, the Rebuilding is quite slow. But sometimes ya gotta 'Trust the Process' (76ers fans?) and just strap in. We're most interested in Rebuilding after we've resolved a Jace's Erasure or Sphinx's Tutelage to make use of some potential extra draws. Like Jace himself, this could end up playing out slowly, but the advantage gained will often be crippling to our opponents.

I was still playing casually when Odyssey came out, and I remember thinking of mill decks as "almost good enough." Didn't quite have the oomph to get there, but it was close. Then I opened a Traumatize in a pack, and let me tell you — for a casual player, that was a Rare with some oomph. It's a little unfortunate for us that the more early mill spells we're able to play, the worse Traumatize is (X will be smaller if their library has already been diminished), so if we have this bad boy in our opening hand, consider spending the early turns deploying some defenders to really maximize the trauma.

Unsung Hero

Going back to the aforementioned "almost good enough" milling strategy for the casuals, Tempest's Grindstone was another huge player in that space. The thought of "going off" with an effect like that was awesome, even if manabases often prevented true bonanzas. Unfortunately, the Grindstone is too expensive for this project, so we're going with the next best thing. Sphinx's Tutelage is a much better version of Jace's Erasure for only 1 more mana, and gives us the possibility to really pack a punch against any mono-colored deck we come across. Additionally, keep in mind that the activated ability can trigger it (and any Erasures), so don't hesitate to keep extra lands in hand for any game state where our Crabs aren't putting in work.
