This week I'm going all the way back to Alpha and using Birds of Paradise to ramp into turn-two Stone Rain. This deck has been popping up more and more on Magic Online and for good reason – it's strong! Also given the current metagame, I like where it is positioned. Primeval Titan / Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle decks are surging in popularity and I expect that trend to continue after Oliver Tiu went 4-0 with it at Worlds. Tron decks also continue to be popular, which land destruction is strong against. Also many decks are weak to Blood Moon, including the Abzan deck that a third of Worlds competitors played. Ramping into land destruction spells and Blood Moon is really powerful right now.
The idea of the deck is to ramp into land destruction spells to keep the opponent light on mana, then cast a giant monster and smoosh the opponent with it. Inferno Titan is the best monster for the deck because it also kills off all the opponent's mana dorks, which allow an opponent to cast their spells without lands. Bonfire of the Damned serves a similar role, killing only the opponent's creatures.
The fourth Blood Moon against decks that are weak to Blood Moon. Those matchups should be obvious.
Spellskite comes in against Infect, Bogles, and Death's Shadow decks. It's also a way to block Etched Champion out of Affinity.
Thrun, the Last Troll is the best card in the universe against Jeskai and is also great against Jund and Abzan decks that rely on targeted removal.
Ancient Grudge is our weapon of choice against Affinity. It also kills AEther Vial and Crucible of Worlds, two cards we want answers to since they can throw a wrench in a mana denial plan.
Anger of the Gods is against any swarm deck: Affinity, Elves, Merfolk, etc.
Sudden Shock is good against Affinity and whenever you just really need to kill something and you ain't got time for your kill spell to sit on the stack.
Relic of Progenitus is an answer to Tarmogoyf, Grim Flayer, Snapcaster Mage, and Dredge. Dredge is waning in popularity, but if it's big in your area you can run Grafidgger's Cage instead of Relic of Progenitus and whatever other sideboard cards target decks you don't expect to face.
Blood Moon comes out against decks that are one color or mostly red.
Mwonvuli Acid-Moss can come out against fast decks that operate off few lands.
Bonfire of the Damned can come out against decks without little creatures.
Obstinate Baloth and Batterskull can come out against decks without Liliana of the Veil and where life gain is not important.
Beast Within can come out against decks that don't have any problematic artifacts, enchantments, or Planeswalkers.
Thrun, the Last Troll can come out against decks that don't rely heavily on targeted removal.
Stormbreath Dragon can be interchanged for a different threat against decks where flying, haste, and protection from Craig Wescoe are not especially relevant.
Most of the other cards are integral to the deck's core functioning.
This deck is quite sweet and particularly good right now. Blood Moon is great!
