Planeswalker "tribal" seems to be all the rage these days. Back when I first started the PTQ circuit, we had the first emergence of a "superfriends" deck, in that Jace Beleren was being paired with Elspeth, Knight-Errant and later Gideon Jura in a planeswalker-dominated deck that was a Standard force. As the years have passed, of course we've gotten a lot more version of the same planeswalker, and thanks to the emblem from Gideon of the Trials "Gideon Tribal" has become a fun casual deck.
Then Wizards opened up the floodgates with the recent planeswalker rules change, which says you can have multiple Liliana or Gideon or Garruk on the battlefield at once, so long as they're not the same exact card – the regular legendary rules now apply to planeswalkers, and the "planeswalker uniqueness" rule is no more.
So who am I to resist the trend?
Enter Tezzeret Tribal.
Of course, this looks a lot like the regular Tezzerator decks that have existed for years – first with Tezzeret the Seeker and later Tezzeret, Agent of Blas. But with the rules change and the addition of Tezzeret the Schemer, why wouldn't we go ahead and jam all three in the same deck?
The result is glorious. Tezzeret the Seeker is enormously powerful on its own with its tutoring, and Tezzeret the Schemer provides a crucial piece of removal to the deck that also happens to be a very powerful planeswalker in its own right. With the ability to pick off certain creatures with the -2 ability, new Tezzeret plays perfectly alongside old Tezzerets, and even the Treasure…. Er, Ettherium Cell tokens it makes can be very relevant, both ramping mana and giving you additional artifacts to tap for convoke on the centerpiece of the deck Whir of Invention.
Of course, this deck has a ton going on underneath the hood. The primary win condition is to lock opponents' creatures out with Ensnaring Bridge, and then assembling the Thopter Foundry / Sword of the Meek combo, which allows you to sacrifice the Sword to the Foundry to create a 1/1 flier and gain a life. Since the Thopter entering triggers the recursion clause on the Sword, you can use the combo to turn every mana into a point of life and a 1/1 flier. Draw for your turn and attack with an army of 1/1s – enough to satisfy the requirements on Ensnaring Bridge – and you've got a win condition.
But the deck does a lot more than that. It can disrupt combo opponents with discard, main deck graveyard hate in Nihil Spellbomb that can be tutored, Trading Post to grind out value in the long game, and even a lock with Ghost Quarter and Crucible of Worlds.
Package it all together – with Tezzerets leading the way – and you've got a consistent and versatile deck that can adapt to answer most decks in the format. And there's not much more enjoyable than untapping with three different Tezzerets in play, I can tell you that much.
