Doing degenerate stuff in Modern is a reliable recipe for success. Broken decks—KCI, Twin, Pod—all enjoyed format-warping success, which ultimately led to their respective bans. While it's often easier to ban the namesake card in these instances, sometimes a particular mechanic precludes success.

Dredge has gotten multiple cards banned over the years, and yet it persists as a viable option in Modern. Credit where it's due: Dredge has demonstrated fantastic resiliency and remains a solid choice. Even though there won't be any new dredge cards printed anytime soon, the graveyard plays an essential role in Modern, and as long as that remains the case, Dredge will always be viable.

Dredge has fallen off the map thanks to the companion mechanic, which has not only distorted Modern but every other format from Standard all the way up to Vintage. Lurrus of the Dream-Den in particular has been a nuisance, and as a result, players have been packing tools to  effectively maintain graveyard shenanigans, hurting Dredge as a result. However, yesterday's companion errata may present an opportunity for Dredge to rise from the grave once again.

Although Dredge is known for its complicated play patterns, the reward is incredibly high if you can master the strategy. While intimidating at first, it can provide an exciting learning experience about Magic's most complicated mechanic. Dredge first debuted back in Ravnica: City of Guilds. It's a replacement effect, which means it cannot be responded to. Let's take an example of how the dredge mechanic works to garner a better understanding of how the Modern strategy functions.

stinkweed imp

If we were to draw a card, we could dredge instead as long as we have a dredge card in the graveyard. For example: we have a Stinkweed Imp in our graveyard, and instead of drawing a card, we choose to dredge: we put the top five cards of our library into the graveyard and place the Stinkweed Imp in our hand. It may seem relatively straightforward, but there will be times where you will want to draw a card instead of dredging. It's uncommon but it happens. It's also a force of habit to draw a card on your draw step given it's how we've always played the game and it takes time to adjust to having an alternative. I recommend adding a die or marker to remember that you have the option to dredge when you draw.

Discard outlets are crucial, allowing us to put dredgers into the graveyard to keep the dredge flowing. If you are resolving a spell that will enable you to draw multiple cards at once, such as Cathartic Reunion, if you only have a single dredge card in your graveyard, you can still dredge on the second draw if you mill another dredge card with the first batch—each draw is handled separately. Admittedly, it takes a little while to become familiar with the mechanic, but the payoff is well-worth the time spent.

Faithless Looting was banned last year, raising concerns about Dredge's viability.

Then Theros Beyond Death dropped.

ox of agonas

Although it looks similar to Bedlam Reveler, Ox of Agonas gives Dredge plenty of mileage. Bedlam Reveler saw minor play in Dredge but never got past the fringes due to the steep cost on the creature and the limited ways to discount it. However, what makes Ox of Agonas so good is partly why Faithless Looting was so good: it can be cast from the graveyard. Dredge can throw plenty of cards into the graveyard swiftly, and Ox of Agonas provides insurance to do something with those cards. Casting a 5/3 from your graveyard, discarding your hand full of dredgers and filling your graveyard with 12-15 cards puts opponents in a difficult situation. Ox of Agonas can also provide that last bit of reach to finish off opponents, which is handy if you are unable to find Conflagrate.

One of the upsides to Modern Dredge is that you can easily build it on a budget as the first step towards an optimized list. Fortunately, Dredge rarely deviates from its core approach, which means you can comfortably build this without concern of the strategy changing anytime soon.

Without green our win conditions become more creature-focused. In optimal Dredge, Life from the Loam rebuys fetchlands to feed lethal Conflagrates which is not an option due to the price of fetchlands. Because of this, the importance of picking up Bloodghast cannot be overstated—pushing through damage with creatures is crticial. While expensive, Bloodghast remains a potent threat even without fetchlands; it can mitigate bad draws and bring Prized Amalgams back to the battlefield. Fortunately, when it comes to upgrades, the creature base is already optimal.

For updates, it's critical to pick up Blood Crypt and Stomping Ground first for mana consistency, and then I would look at picking up Bloodstained Mire and Wooded Foothills, which can replace Swamps, Mountains, and Dragonskull Summit in the budget list. Once you have four Bloodstained Mire and Wooded Foothills then I would pick up Life from the Loam (removing two Darkblast and a Swamp) and the Conflagrate (removing Dakmor Salvage). Life from the Loam is better the more fetchlands you have access to, so it is worth waiting until you have all eight in your list. Lastly, picking up Copperline Gorge and Gemstone Mine will make it easier to cast Life from the Loam

Rounding out to the sideboard is Thoughtseize, which is a powerful spell to answer the graveyard hosers opponents will bring in for game two. While they are expensive thanks to their applications in Pioneer as well as in Modern, Duress is an excellent substitution. Most of the graveyard hate in Modern is non-creature, which Duress can target with ease. If you want to cover all card types, Agonizing Remorse is a decent alternative for additional mana if you are unable to invest in Thoughtseize anytime soon. Alternatively, expanding into Assassin's Trophy or Abrupt Decay is another approach to tackling tricky threats and hate cards.

Tips and Tricks

Maintaining and not obfuscating the boardstate is an integral part of playing Dredge cleanly. Most players opt for having their graveyard laid out in front of them just below their lands. Doing this allows you to keep an eye on your Narcomoeba, Bloodghast, and Prized Amalgam triggers, which also keeps your opponent informed as this is public information as well as good etiquette. I recommend tapping Prized Amalgam in your graveyard if a creature came back into play on that turn to remind you of the delayed trigger on the next end step.

If you want to activate Shriekhorn on your opponent's turn, the ideal time is at the end of their second main phase in order to account for Prized Amalgam; if Prized Amalgam triggers, it will enter the battlefield at the beginning of your opponent's end step, and if you activate Shriekhorn on their end step, Prized Amalgam won't enter the battlefield until your next end step.

Despite Dredge's perpetual status as Modern's boogeyman, it is resilient and remains an excellent choice. Although companion's warping Modern now, it's only a matter of time till everyone's muttering about how Dredge is too powerful and should've been nerfed some time ago. Despite these claims, you learn to play through particular hate cards, which broaden your skillset as a Magic player; despite conventional wisdom, Dredge does not completely fold to Rest in Peace or Leyline of the Void. It's finding the solution to these problems that will help you grow as a player and show you why you can't kill that which is already dead: it simply comes back, again and again.
