Modern's always been a bit of a curiosity to me. I railbirded the first Modern Pro Tour in Philadelphia, and I'll always remember talking to Evan Erwin about it and how hyped he was, gleefully diving right into how broken the format was and how shocked Wizards of the Coast (WotC) was at how degenerate the decks were.
Until recently, Modern never appealed to me. It's a Thoughtseize/Inquisition of Kozilek format that's really expensive and full of linears—gameplay could be accurately represented by two ships passing in the night.
Since its inauspicious beginnings, Modern has gained a ton of traction, particularly at the local level, displacing Standard as the game's flagship competitive format despite the relatively high price point of Modern decks. Standard's constant presence on Arena devalues it, and Pioneer had the misfortune of going to market a scant five months before a global pandemic hit, so Modern wins by default. It certainly helps that Modern is undergoing a gameplay renaissance, thanks in no small part to Modern Horizons 2.
The common refrain about Modern among Magic's most terminally online participants is that it's now taken on the shape of something resembling Modern Horizons Block Constructed, the optics of which are certainly undesirable. Yes, the cards are pushed, power level-wise. However, an appraisal of Modern Horizons' impact on Modern is incomplete without considering how the cards impact gameplay and what they incentivize.
In the case of Modern Horizon 2's most impactful cards—Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer, Urza's Saga, Solitude—the power in these cards is realized on the literal battlefield. Modern Horizons 2's most powerful cards by and large require both players to submit to the idea that the board and interacting with it matters. Sure, Prismatic Ending is good, but at the end of the day it's still just a one-for-one. If painless sorcery-speed Anguished Unmaking is a good card in a format that stretches back nearly two decades, that's probably a good thing.
Likewise, an appraisal of Modern Horizons' impact on Modern is also incomplete without considering the prices of the cards. Wrenn and Six, Ragavan, and Solitude aren't cheap, but at least at the local level, which is where Modern is most vociferously enjoyed, the most expensive cards of the format are easy enough to opt out of. Players can acquire the expensive cards slowly or not at all, not to mention borrowing cards from one another.
I really enjoy the current iteration of Modern and am looking forward to getting into the nitty gritty. Let's hit it.

When people talk about boomer decks, this right here is the kind of thing they're talking about.
This is the Top 8 decks from this challenge charted by the average year a card in that deck first saw print in Modern. Analysis like this keeps decks in clusters between 2009 and 2014 (thank you, fetchlands) but skewed toward the higher end of that range because the Modern Horizons sets are so ubiquitous. There's a story here for every deck. For example, the Infect deck that came in 7th obviously features creatures that were printed exclusively in 2010 or 2011, making its true average year a card in the deck was printed 2011.65. Through this lens, the Tron deck is flabbergasting.
With a maindeck consisting of one card from 2021 and no cards from 2020, this Tron deck looks and feels like something I PTQed with in 2013. The Karn, the Great Creator package here is pretty ho-hum, but if you've already got the cards from when you played this deck during the Obama administration I say roll with it because the games you win are going to be sweet.

I'm sure I'll say this a lot over the course of this column, but Lurrus of the Dream-Den should just be banned already. These homogenous piles of nonsense with four Mishra's Bauble sprinkled on top suck and are lame. Obviously this deck is great; the floor on a deck with an active Lurrus in the sideboard and four maindeck Baubles is nauseatingly high.

I follow just enough zoomers on Twitter to know that Prowess is a better version of Burn, but one of the laws that govern Modern is inertia, which is my explanation for why Burn's on the above table and all Prowess gets is a perfunctory paragraph. It's wild that a deck with four copies of Sigarda's Aid is actually good, but that's Hammer. Now that the deck's core's pretty set, all that's left to do with the archetype is to experiment in the margins. One of the most widely-adopted wrinkles in recent weeks is adding a pair of Kor Outfitter in order to hit a more desirable critical mass of ways to equip a Colossus Hammer. Based on the mean and median performance of Grixis Death's Shadow across last weekend's Modern Challenges, the above iteration of the deck overperformed by a lot. On the other hand, Death's Shadow decks are decision-intensive and explosive, so it seems only natural that more players piloting the deck would bog down its averages. Death's Shadow has displaced Jund as the optimal Thoughtseize + Inquisition of Kozilek deck in Modern, and the sooner we all acknowledge that this is true the sooner we can all begin to heal.
Like Jund before it, Death's Shadow has a 52% expected win rate but plays individually powerful and compelling cards and is a relative favorite to take down any Modern tournament, alongside Hammer. I'll say it again: this is the new Jund. Get on board with it.

This deck and archetype is a Hasbro shareholder's dream. Is it a pile of the most expensive cards in the format? Yes it is. Is there an outside element (a companion, perhaps) that the deck is more or less obligated to play that forces the minimum deck size upwards by 20 cards, forcing its players to play even more overpowered and overpriced cards? You betcha.
Is it good? Yeah, probably.

Sporting only eight maindeck creatures, this iteration of the money pile archetype is a total weirdo but makes perfect sense. The best thing about the archetype is the individual power level of its cards, and this list trades in its sometimes-clunky creatures for more backbreaking planeswalkers and Supreme Verdict to protect them. Also, I'd rather know I'm playing control than play some midrange pile of cards.

This list addresses all the fundamental problems I have with the Ephemerate lean-on-synergies-with-an-80-card-deck list and just knows its deal: stick an Omnath, crack a fetch, and go berserk. Everything else going on here is in aid of that.
