The Planeswalker Deck Project continues!

As usual, make sure you're caught up on your PDD history.

One of the interesting takeaways from this project is learning how many color combinations are well supported with Planeswalkers. For a long time, Red/White was one of the least supported combinations. And things haven't changed too much; even today, Red/White only has 5 Planeswalkers, and 2 of those have come within the last 18 months. (Compare that to Red/Green, which has 9, or Black/White, which has 7, with an 8th recently spoiled!) 

The themes for these Red/White Walkers are a little scattered as well, but I knew that at some point, I would dedicate a deck to The Boros Legion. Nahiri, Storm of Stone fits the bill due to her preference for attacking creatures.

The Game Plan

Charge! We've got fairly cheap creatures with some neat combat tricks, equipment, and burn spells, and they're ready to turn sideways. Attack early and often, and get the game won before your opponent has found their footing. A strong attribute of our early creatures is that they usually aren't just bodies. Skyknight Vanguard is an Army of One, Goblin Legionnaire is around to be the ultimate team player, Boros Challenger helps out its fellows to show them the ropes, and Flame-Kin Zealot makes some of the early unimpressive bodies more formidable. 

Although the initial Boros mechanic from Ravnica (Radiance) was basically a whiff, the second and third tries were fun, effective, and flavorful. As a result, we'll be trying to make use of both Battalion and Mentor. Thankfully, they play well together. Because of Nahiri's other ability, it also makes sense to play a few pieces of equipment. We're not looking to go crazy, but being able to equip Short Sword for free is an excellent advantage. Veteran's Armaments can turn even our dopiest creature or most mundane token into a strong combatant, and in the event that our opponent has equipment of their own, Manriki-Gusari will show everyone that equipment should only be handled by those with proper training. 

Unlike most of its Constructed lifespan, this project and the games that come with it will likely ensure that Boros Charm gets used for its modes other than simply 4 damage. At only 2 mana, it's a very potent combat trick that can save the entire board or decimate a blocking plan on the other side. Justice Strike, Arrest, Warleader's Helix, and Integrity // Intervention provide strong and flexible removal. Orim's Thunder is a particularly nasty disenchant effect, and Boros Fury-Shield can catch an unsuspecting opponent unaware for huge gains. 

The Rares

(Remember, because Nahiri is an Uncommon Planeswalker, this deck gets Five Rares!)

If you're looking to be aggressive, I'm not sure there's ever been a one-mana creature that gives you more bang for your buck than Figure of Destiny. Never had the pleasure of casting the Little Kithkin That Could? I implore you, give it a shot. It's a fantastic mana sink; it can grow to 2/2, then to 4/4, then all the way to 8/8 with Flying and First Strike! Now, it does take time. Remember that you need to level it up sequentially. But boy, for just a single card, the Figure is an exceptionally potent threat and all just for a one-mana start. (Pro Tip: when I level up a Figure, I like to keep track with a 6-sided die placed just above the card, so as not to confuse it with +1/+1 counters or as something that could be removed. I promise you'll find it helpful!) 

Okay, good news first: Vindicator has an incredible suite of abilities for only 2 mana. Double Strike, Vigilance, and Trample allow this fella to be an amazing creature in combat. Bad news: it's so extremely small, so it'll be much more difficult to actually survive a tussle. Swiftblade is our #1 choice to put on some Equipment, as a Veteran's Armaments makes this the most dangerous soldier in the army, and if we don't have anything for the Vindicator to wear, casting a nice cheap Integrity is a fine consolation prize. 

Tajic is a great team player. Battles well, solid rate, helps out the new guys, and keeps others safe. It's hard to ask for more than that on a 3-mana body. For some reason, when I first read this guy I thought his damage prevention ability was the one that required mana and his first strike was free. Do not think that! Especially when you're counting on that First Strike. Avoid catastrophes and always read the cards, kids.

I've played several of these other Rare cards in other formats, but Firemane Avenger is absolutely that Rare you open in a draft, remark on how absurd it was, and stuff it in a box, never to be seen again. I'm thrilled that it's seeing the light of day in today's deck. It's a fine rate for a creature in this project, and its Battalion trigger will take over a game with only one or two swings. 

When I initially scoured my Bulk Rare box for inclusions to this project, Basandra jumped out at me because I didn't recognize it at all. (To my recollection, I've never played with it, or even seen it!) The copy I'm using is from Conspiracy, and after looking it up I see that it originally came from one of the EDH sets that I never bought. All that said, Basandra has a very unique set of effects that will require a little finesse and planning on our part before utilized effectively. This leading lady is at her best when we're already ahead, and just always remember that our awesome instants instead become sorceries for all intents and purposes. The upside to Basandra is that she'll make sure that enemy removal can't spoil your day, and if we're very far ahead, her demanding ways can force the opponent into taking blockers off the line and into the fray. Just make sure we're not counting on a trick of our own, as her effect is symmetrical. 

Unsung Hero

Suppression Field

Just like Basandra above, Suppression Field isn't simply a card we want to just drop into play as soon as we can play it. There's some careful consideration involved, since the effect is symmetrical. Lots of our cards are just around to attack and have useful triggers which aren't affected by the Field. But we also aren't super short on activations, so it might not always be the card to drop. The good news is that it can be annoying and disruptive on the right board, and in certain cases, totally derail the opponent's game plan. Imagine dropping a Suppression Field against a board where the enemy Planeswalker is critical for success, or they're relying on creatures with activations to hold off your army. Sometimes this will bite us, so be careful, but oftentimes, the disruption provided will be all that's needed for the Boros Legion to march on to victory.
