Thanks to Omnath, Locus of Creation, four-color control shells have been firmly in Modern's tier 1 since Zendikar Rising. But they're not without their flaws.

The tension between tapping out for powerful threats like Omnath, Locus of Creation and holding up for interaction like Cryptic Command can put them in tricky situations, and their manabase is unreliable. In particular, their reliance on Field of the Dead as a finisher can make it difficult to cast their spells on curve, particularly when they're already reaching to support Mystic Sanctuary.

These problems can both be addressed though, by replacing Hour of Promise with a different five-mana sorcery—Time Warp.

The engine of Mystic Sanctuary and Time Warp adds an entire new dimension to the deck, allowing you to pivot on a dime from managing your opponent's game plan to comboing off for the win. The ability to deny your opponent from reaching their fifth or even fourth turn reduces your reliance on countermagic to deny their endgame. It also means you no longer need Field of the Dead to win against opposing control and Primeval Titan decks, allowing you to streamline your manabase by cutting all of the colorless lands.

Generally your goal is to avoid giving your opponent another turn after you cast your first Time Warp. There are two primary ways to accomplish this.

The first is killing them with damage from Omnath, Locus of Creation and Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath. The second is activating the ultimate on Wrenn and Six, ideally with an extra loyalty to keep it around, or access to a second copy to recur lands so you can infinitely retrace Time Warp. Ultimating Teferi, Hero of Dominaria can also be sufficient to win, though it may give your opponent a brief window to steal the game if they get a turn with some permanents left.

Timing Your Time Warp

Unlike classic "turns" decks, we don't actually play many extra-turn spells. This means you can only rely on having three or four extra turns off recurring the same Time Warp with Mystic Sanctuary, and doing so consumes your draw step. Having a planeswalker or Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath to draw another card on each of your extra turns is crucial to snowballing the game out of control in that time frame.

For this reason, consider holding a planeswalker in hand to deploy alongside Time Warp (rather than deploying it early) if it's likely to die to combat damage or a removal spell you can avoid later—particularly when you can stick a copy of Teferi, Time Raveler. Similarly, it is often correct to hold Omnath, Locus of Creation until you can guarantee the immediate burst of mana, rather than expose it to removal on your opponent's turn.

While Mystic Sanctuary gives you repeated access to Time Warp, it doesn't do so right away. It's important to sequence your turns so that you don't end up passing the turn with Time Warp on top of your deck and no way to draw it. Consider holding cantrips to have cheap access to the top of your library when you don't have enough mana to play one of the more expensive planeswalkers in the same turn as your Time Warp.

You don't always have the straightforward setup to convert Time Warp into a win, typically because you had to use some copies of Mystic Sanctuary already, or your planeswalker is too low on loyalty to reach an ultimate in time. Your primary tool for bridging the gap in these spots is Tamiyo, Collector of Tales.

Her -3 ability offers an additional way to recur Time Warp, giving you the extra room you need to reach an ultimate or close the game in combat. If you know you'll need extra copies of Time Warp, try to get Tamiyo, Collector of Tales into play as soon as possible to build up extra loyalty.

Tamiyo, Collector of Tales +1 ability has some baseline value in fueling the various graveyard elements of the deck, but it's far more effective when you can set it up for a guaranteed hit. Mystic Sanctuary is a great way to do this, so prioritize using Tamiyo to collect your top card over other card draw effects when possible to optimize your card drawing. Jace, the Mind Sculptor also combines nicely, setting up Tamiyo to draw a card (even two if you have a pair in hand) and filter away anything you don't need.

Card Choices

This deck does a poor job of maximizing the acceleration offered by Growth Spiral, as you'd often rather play Wrenn and Six on turn two and most of the four-drops are best paired with a fetch land. That said, it really appreciates cantrips for a few reasons.

Having spare blue cards other than our draw engines makes it easier to cast Force of Negation and still have the tools to combo off. One-mana cantrips let us curve Time Warp on five mana into Mystic Sanctuary for Time Warp the next turn, and Growth Spiral effectively costs one for these purposes most of the time. It also helps fill the graveyard to escape Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath, which can be difficult at times in this shell since we cut down on interaction. Growth Spiral giving us backup ramp options to smooth out our top-heavy curve makes it more valuable than other options like Serum Visions, despite it not living up to its full potential.

Between Primeval Titan decks with four copies of Dryad of the Ilysian Grove and aggro decks featuring Scourge of the Skyclaves, Path to Exile is largely a better removal spell than Lightning Bolt right now. There are still quite a few must-answer creatures on turn one though, such as Giver of Runes, Elvish Reclaimer, or various prowess creatures, and the freedom to kill them without ramping your opponent that early in the game is valuable enough to warrant playing a Lightning Bolt or two. The other copies of Path to Exile should always be in the sideboard so you can board into plenty of removal when needed.

The combo finish takes off a lot of pressure to answer every threat your opponent plays, so I'd like to stay away from subpar countermagic like Mana Leak. Teferi, Time Raveler is still pretty annoying in mirrors though, so if Omnath, Locus of Creation decks are popular enough you can consider a spare copy of Remand. Mostly I'd rather just lean on Mystical Dispute in the sideboard though.

Fires of Invention is anti-Blood Moon technology. Basic Plains is pretty rough in a Mystic Sanctuary and Wrenn and Six deck, and you can only play four copies of Flooded Strand, so relying on Celestial Purge can be rough. Aether Gust has some similar issues with fetching basic Island, and you still have to answer it again. Fires of Invention lets you play through a Blood Moon on its own without committing to basic lands early, whether to just chain spells and win straight up or cast a removal spell. It's also just a powerful mana engine in its own right even without Blood Moon in play, and may just be worth playing in the main if it didn't stop us from interacting at instant speed.

I expect the number of decks playing Blood Moon to trend downward, though. The shift to Omnath Warp over Omnath Control makes Primeval Titan decks poorly positioned, which will give the Blood Moon players fewer targets to prey on. One card I'm eyeing to replace this slot is Firespout, which I like as a hedge primarily against prowess, though it has some value against most creature strategies.

Sideboard Guide

Vs. Four-Color Control

+2 Mystical Dispute
+2 Veil of Summer
+1 Celestial Purge

-3 Path to Exile
-1 Lightning Bolt
-1 Time Warp

Time Warp is a lot less valuable when your card advantage engines are heavily contested, so we trim on those. I could even be talked up to cutting a second, but finding one is still important for beating Field of the Dead, and if you draw too many you can just pitch one to Force of Negation.

Celestial Purge is a hedge for Ashiok, Dream Render that also tags Wrenn and Six and Omnath, Locus of Creation, though if I'm sure my opponent won't have Ashiok, I'll probably just leave it in the sideboard over the Time Warp.

Vs. Omnath Warp (The Mirror)

+2 Mystical Dispute
+2 Celestial Purge
+1 Veil of Summer

-1 Lightning Bolt
-3 Path to Exile
-1 Growth Spiral

The value of some cards changes significantly in this matchup. We want all our copies of Celestial Purge to handle Wrenn and Six and Omnath, Locus of Creation. Veil of Summer on the other hand loses some value in the mirror as opposed to typical control matchups, as it's far less effective against the more proactive strategies that may not interact with you in a window where it's convenient to cast it. I only want one, though the second copy on the play may be worth considering, as being ahead a turn forces your opponent to play into your Veil of Summer timings. If you board in the second Veil of Summer on the play, the cut is a second Growth Spiral.

Vs. Selesnya Titan

+3 Aether Gust

-1 Force of Negation
-1 Path to Exile
-1 Tamiyo, Collector of Tales

The main way you lose this matchup is Boil, so plan accordingly. Ideally you can stick a Teferi, Time Raveler early to limit their timing windows, and avoiding using your fetch lands also limits the damage. As soon as you've resolved Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath or Omnath, Locus of Creation it doesn't matter nearly as much anymore though, particularly when backed up by Wrenn and Six.

Some players have been cutting Boil for Relic of Progenitus, which is much less of an issue. If that includes your opponent, board out all your copies of Force of Negation for Path to Exile.

Vs. Amulet Titan

+3 Aether Gust

-1 Lightning Bolt
-1 Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath
-1 Teferi, Time Raveler

This is a similar matchup, though instead of Boil they rely on their racing speed to win. Unlike Elvish Reclaimer, Sakura-Tribe Scout dies to Wrenn and Six, so we can safely board out the Lightning Bolt in this matchup.

Vs. Mono-Red Prowess

+1 Path to Exile
+2 Celestial Purge
+3 Aether Gust

-3 Force of Negation
-1 Time Warp
-2 Jace, the Mind Sculptor

Classic prowess rules apply: your main priority is stopping them from controlling creatures at all times, as it's incredibly difficult for them to burn you out without a heavy dose of combat damage. If you expect them to board in Blood Moon, you can bring in Fires of Invention. It might even be good without them attempting to Blood Moon you, though I haven't had the chance to test this thoroughly yet.

Vs. Rakdos Scourge

+1 Path to Exile
+2 Celestial Purge
+1 Aether Gust
+2 Veil of Summer

-3 Force of Negation
-1 Time Warp
-2 Growth Spiral

This is a similar deal as against Prowess, but they play a bunch of black creatures and interaction spells so Veil of Summer gains some value over Aether Gust. Jace, the Mind Sculptor is also stronger here, as their creatures are more vulnerable to unsummoning, they play less burn to kill him, and we're more in need of extra top-end against their interaction. On the draw, board a Veil of Summer back out for a Growth Spiral.

Vs. Oops All Spells

+3 Soul-Guide Lantern
+2 Mystical Dispute
+1 Veil of Summer

-3 Path to Exile
-1 Lightning Bolt
-1 Force of Negation
-1 Uro, Titan of Nature's Wrath

Just board in anything that can possibly interact with Balustrade Spy or Undercity Informer. Force of Negation isn't great, but at least it can tag a Pentad Prism to slow them down or a Thoughtseize to protect an actual piece of interaction. On the draw, board out Veil of Summer and leave in all three copies of Force of Negation.

Vs. Jund

+2 Veil of Summer
+1 Path to Exile
+1 Celestial Purge

-3 Force of Negation
-1 Time Warp

Normally I wouldn't even consider Jund a matchup worth thinking about, but Jaberwocki is queued for the Magic Online Championship Series, and bless his heart he's probably gonna play Jund. So here we are.

Vs. Gruul Midrange (Ponza)

+2 Celestial Purge
+3 Aether Gust
+2 Fires of Invention

-3 Force of Negation
-2 Path to Exile
-1 Growth Spiral
-1 Jace, the Mind Sculptor

Color hate go brrrrrr

Beating Omnath Warp

If I were playing a large tournament like a Grand Prix or Pro Tour or whatever they're called these days, I would play Omnath Warp. But I'm playing in the Magic Online Championship this weekend, and I expect a lot of my competitors to be playing Omnath Warp themselves. That opens up an interesting option.

While there aren't any particular archetypes that are that terrifying for Omnath Warp, there are a couple cards, namely Boil and to a lesser extent Rest in Peace. Pairing these with a strong archetype that already has reasonable matchup against Omnath, Locus of Creation shells yields the following Four-Color Copycat list.
