Damage and discard go together like peanut butter and chocolate. Discard forces the game into top-deck mode very quickly, and once there, your direct damage plan has a much better chance of closing the game than whatever your opponent was trying to do.

Thanks to Modern Horizons, this strategy is better than ever. We've come a long way since the days of Blightning. Now our three-mana spells deal 6 damage instead of 3, and we can recur them for one mana. Theros Beyond Death bad boy Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger bolsters this plan even further. If your opponent is out of cards, Kroxa's ability deals more damage, but if you're out of cards, chances are you've got a graveyard stocked to help it escape.
