At some point in this project, I knew I'd need to put together a Blue/Red Storm deck. To tell you the truth, I wasn't even sure if it was possible, but it's such an iconic mechanic that I had to try. 

Today, Ral, Storm Conduit is leading our lineup as the Planeswalker that will (hopefully) reward the attempt.

The Game Plan

We're here to cast a whole bunch of spells, and then land a big payoff. In the meantime, we'll do everything we can to keep ourselves alive, and buy time for the big bang. 

For our early drops, Goblin Electromancer and Vodalian Arcanist are our all stars. The Arcanist especially can block well, and maybe facilitate an early removal spell. Once we hit 3 or 4 mana, our Drake squad comes online and holds down the fort. It may take a few turns for us to turn those Drakes into offensive juggernauts, but no worries. Once we get to the point where we can deploy a monster turn, we won't be nearly as concerned with their power.

The top end can be expensive…but if we're willing to time things out a bit and think about future turns ahead, we can suspend Riftwing Cloudstake or Errant Ephemeron at steep discounts. Peregrine Drake has a high cost for the body, but the rebate is great and enables some storm hijinks. Nucklavee is a card advantage machine and can help us rebuild from an early storm session, or reclaim spells we had to burn previously, or just gas us up for the big finale. 

The spell base is nice, and we'll need to apply some patience to make sure we get the most out of somewhat limited resources. As tempting as it is to burn Preordain or Ponder early, we need to save the cantrips for the turns where we're trying to go off. Deciding which route to take is a judgement call that will matter every game. 

And that extends beyond the cheap spells too. When do we cast the Frantic Search? How about the Recoup, or the Rift Bolt? Do we suspend it or cast? If we suspend, can we make the most out of the next turn? Most of our other decks are relatively simple. You play what you can play turn by turn, and holding up for tricks happens at fairly obvious times. This deck does not offer such luxuries. We're trying to storm off here and have a big turn where we play multiple spells and follow up with a knockout punch. Plan. Your. Turns. Otherwise, you got no chance. 

So let's talk about our Storm options a bit here. First up is Grapeshot. We don't have Pyromancer's Swath or anything like that here, so it'll be difficult to build up the Storm to KO our opponent in one shot with Grapeshot. At least not from 20. So it's likely that Grapeshot will be used defensively to protect us, or to finish off the opponent after a couple Drake hits. Now, if we have Ral in play, the Grapeshot has some more teeth, and then we have some more options...but it's likely the weakest choice.

Let's look at Brain Freeze. With 60 card decks, we'll probably need a count of over 12 in order to get 'em. And 12 is a lot! However, if we can work a Remand into the equation, things don't look too bad (which is why Remand is an All Star here). Remember that unlike many of our other Storm payoffs, Brain Freeze is a blue instant, so we can buy it back with Nucklavee

Like Grapeshot, Empty the Warrens might be deployed a little toned down. It can be a great defensive tool, or maybe there'll be some game plans where we just go for it and try to seal the deal in a couple turns. 

Temporal Fissure is a little sneaky, although if you play Pauper, you can attest that it's incredible. If we can resolve this for 3+ copies, we can buy ourselves a million turns. If we can use some kind of burn spells or other removal so that we're free to Fissure away lands, we can set our opponents so far back that future plans can bear fruit. 

The Rares

Fantastic early drop! If our Storm count isn't nearly lethal, Firemind's Research here can either help gas us back up or deliver some hard 5-point shots — both of which are invaluable. It's hard to ask for more from a Blue/Red deck trying to capitalize on spells that just needs something helpful in the early turns. This card is a great investment. 

My buddy and I usually like to give out awards each new set for the best card names. Not only did The Mirari Conjecture win for Dominaria, it's been a long time since I loved a card name as much as that one. It's like the name of some incredible crime thriller, where Jace Beleren and his buddy Teferi are trying to crack the case. Tezzeret as the big mob boss! Liliana as the femme fatale! The story practically writes itself. Anyway, the Conjecture here is gonna buy back all our best stuff. When Chapter III hits, we'll hopefully be able to set off the fireworks. 

This might be absurdly broken. Hmmm, let me start over here. This IS absurdly broken. Mind's Desire is banned from most of its eligible formats, and for good reason. Here, it's about as low-impact as it could get it, and it can still absolutely break games wide open! Ideally, we'll chain Mind's Desire into another Storm spell and then some, and go from there. 

Yes, this costs a fortune. 7 mana is a ton. I get it. But, the turn after we land this will be fantastic. Like I said, we need to plan our turns out in advance. If it looks like we can resolve the Swarm, we'll stand a solid chance to go off the next turn. 

Unsung Hero

This is the ultimate Swiss Army Knife. Mostly, it'll be a mana accelerant that allows us to have our bonkers storm turn. Sometimes, it'll be a Cryptic Command that keeps the opponent from getting in damage to buy us critical time. Occasionally, it'll untap our Drakes for a phenomenal combat step. And rarely, we can tap our opponent's lands down to prevent them from responding to something wild! For 4 mana, it's hard to ask for more than that. If we can get something like Electromancer going first, we'll be able to really make the most of our mana. Turnabout: don't leave home without it!
