Today's Planeswalker Duel Deck is amped up and ready to win some games!

Before you read on, make sure you're up to date on the project!

We don't often get 3-Color Planeswalkers. And once we exclude Nicol Bolas variants, we REALLY don't often get 3-Color Planeswalkers. So when we do have one, it's exciting! My first thought naturally goes to the Shards/Wedges from Alara/Tarkir blocks, as they tended to be very thematically and mechanically resonant, with lots of exciting cards in those combinations.

Unfortunately for Sarkhan Unbroken, Temur is my least favorite of the 10 combinations. The flavor is very loose, and the best most exciting cards are all Mythic Rares that we can't play in this project. So what else does Temur do really well? If The Royal Scions deck didn't focus on the theme, I might have gone with "drawing multiple cards in a turn" because some of that theme went to Green in M21. But it's not deep enough to do different versions of that across similar decks.

What won me over was the last time RUG dominated Standard: Energy. The theme seemed perfect for me here. It's not terribly deep, as Energy is only found in 2 sets, and it meshes well with 3 colors, because we're looking to maximize our amount of Energy-related cards in those 2 sets. Because it's not a common thing, it helps aid the sense of novelty we get when we play the relatively rare 3-Color Planeswalker.

Let's get energized:

The Game Plan

Power up the Energy base, then use it to fuel your various shenanigans! I'll be honest: due to a heavy work schedule when Kaladesh was out, I didn't ever play with the cards that much. I never built any casual decks based around the Energy, so I don't have a huge grasp on how powerful it is other than the tournament coverage I watched over that era. I recognize it's powerful, but I'm interested in exactly how good this deck is relative to the rest of the field. Is it fine? Good? Broken? Let's find out together.

Most of our cards produce Energy, and the ones that don't either make use of it or Proliferate. So the goal should be to not run out of it. The other goal should be to have a plan based on your opening that figures out how you want to allocate your energy. There will be plenty of ways to make it, but we also have plenty of ways to spend it, and figuring out our budget is critical.

The Rares

If there's one thing I love in Magic, it's making tokens. If there's another thing I love in Magic, it's Creature Type - Beast. And if there's a third thing I love in Magic, it's playing lands. Sure enough, the Architect here manages to squeeze right into the very narrow center of my Magic Venn Diagram! I'm not entirely sure if we'll be more interested to see this because it's a (slow) way to make energy, or because it provides a handsome payoff, but I'm pretty sure we'll be happy to see it every game.

Something I always enjoy is the weird, clunky combination of artifacts that WotC chooses to unleash every so often. The Stations in Fifth Dawn, the "______ of Empires" trio in that one Core Set, and now the Modules in Kaladesh. We've got a copy of all three in here, and they'll all be fine on their own since they play into the Energy games. With all three in play, we can start creating some nice loops to get them all to play off each other and build up a pile of Energy, +1/+1 counters, and Servo tokens.

The removal spells in this deck aren't generally all that excellent. However, the Tower here slaps. Yes, 5 Energy is a lot, and we won't pretend for a moment that it's not a large payment. But being able to throw around 3 damage at a time without spending mana is a powerful ability that threatens to take over games after only an activation or two. Additionally, we sometimes won't even have to activate it; the mere threat can be enough sometimes to stymie the opponent's plan. Headaches are a delight as long as we're causing them for someone else.

Another strong piece of removal. Control Magic has always been an absurd ability, and it's no different here. With all the Energy this deck can produce, there's virtually no creature too large to avoid confiscation. No matter what happens in a game, casting this spell will be a real coup! (I'm here all week. Tip your waitress.)

Unsung Hero

When WotC started making gold cards more consistently, the general idea was "better effects, but harder to cast." That tracks; Magic throughout the years has often been about considering tradeoffs, costs, and benefits, and honestly, that always struck me as a reasonable one.

You've also got to consider that back in the halcyon days of Invasion Block, the mana fixing was atrocious. You had Painlands that could really rack up some damage over the course of a game, and City of Brass which also piled up the pain. And that was pretty much it! These days, the various dual lands are an embarrassment of riches from that bygone era. And they're also very frequently Rares.

Well, in a project like this, that brings us back to the old days. We've certainly got wayyyy more nonbasics that fix color than we used to, but the well isn't bottomless. As a result, we're back to a space where the multicolored decks still run the risk of manascrew and the good cards are harder to play. And with a 3-color deck, that problem is compounded further.

So good color-fixing lands are tough to come by. Aether Hub represents a potentially very powerful land that can fix all kinds of color issues, if we can reliably pile up some Energy. And because Sarkhan Unbroken is playing the role of Basic Utility in this project, the Energy is abundant. We've got an incredible nonbasic that isn't supported in any other deck, that provides something of a mana-fixing Ace-in-the-Hole here. I can't wait until it comes up huge in a game!
