Earlier this week numerous formats got a shake-up with the Banned and Restricted announcement, including Modern. Arcum's Astrolabe was banned, which inevitably changed a LOT about the format. So now the question on everyone's mind is, will Jund be a tier 1 deck again?

Probably not.

Regardless, Jund has one of the biggest followings of any deck in Modern, and will always be a staple of the format—regardless of power.  Plus, the banning of Arcum's Astrolabe significantly helps Jund retain a spot in the higher ranks of Modern. Thanks to Astrolabe, the format had devolved into a handful of blue control and midrange decks I like to refer to as "Blue Soup", which meant Jund was really struggling for wins in Modern. With the new changes, Jund has a chance to be a real competitor again.

The blue decks have decreased in popularity for a few reasons. First, the Arcum's Astrolabe ban makes each of these decks less consistent with a more painful manabase. You can no longer play cards like Archmage's Charm as easily. Additionally, Ice-Fang Coatl is significantly worse without Astrolabe, which is especially good for Jund. Ice-Fang Coatl was one of the hardest cards for Jund to deal with.

The List

I initially found a similar list in the MTGO decklist dump and worked from there to this list. The biggest change included Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger. I've been playing different variations of this list since the B&R announcement on Monday, and this is the final iteration that I think will be most successful in the new Modern format.

Card Selection

Now that a lot of the "Blue Soup" decks I mentioned are hindered without Arcum's Astrolabe, Jund can become the deck with one of the best card advantage engines in Modern. This is accomplished by playing cards like Wrenn and Six as well as Lurrus of the Dream-Den with Mishra's Bauble

Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger is one of my favorite new additions to Modern Jund. Jund likes to pivot between being aggressive and being controlling, and Kroxa can pivot just as well to support either plan. It naturally plays well with Jund's attrition plan, but it can also come back as a huge body to close the game.

This sideboard is particularly hateful because the fair decks have mostly left Modern with the banning of Astrolabe, so people are trending toward unfair strategies. That means Jund needs to stock up on things like Damping Sphere, Nihil Spellbomb and Ashiok, Dream Render

Jund mulligans surprisingly well. Because of this, I usually mulligan hands that don't do anything on turns one or two. Ideally you would like to have an Inquisition of Kozilek or Thoughtseize on turn one, followed by Tarmogoyf or removal the following turn. I almost always mulligan hands with one land as the deck can't function on just a high concentration of one-drops—however the exception is when you have multiple Mishra's Bauble and a fetch land.

In the post-board games there are a lot of matches where it is correct to mulligan for your hate pieces. In matchups like Tron or Dredge, you need your hate cards to stand a chance—a good hand without hate cards often isn't good enough.

I've written a handful of Jund articles in the past, but the gameplay with this version of Jund is a little different because of Lurrus of the Dream-Den. Land sequencing, Mishra's Bauble and planning for turns in advance became increasingly important with this version of Jund. For example, if I have the option of shocking or fetch-shocking before playing an Inquisition of Kozilek, I will Mishra's Bauble myself first to see if I want  to keep the card on top of my library. In a similar vein, I might Bauble myself to see if I have a Fatal Push on top which would influence if I play a Stomping Ground or Blackcleave Cliffs for turn. These might be some of the more commonly known tricks with Mishra's Bauble, but it's important to have this base knowledge of sequencing when playing with the card.

With the inclusion of Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger, it is important to plan ahead with your land drops. I still catch myself fetching incorrectly and getting punished for it in the late game by not being able to escape Kroxa on crucial turns.

The point of the entire archetype is to be a midrange deck that can pivot into aggro or control. The deck typically achieves these goals through attrition and one-for-one removal like Fatal Push or Lightning Bolt. With the inclusion of Lurrus of the Dream-Den, your Jund deck is built differently fundamentally, and includes cards like Seal of Fire, Nihil Spellbomb and Mishra's Bauble. You also play more Kolaghan's Commands to bring Lurrus back to your hand in addition to all the other flexible options of the card.

There is so much play and sequencing to the deck, and the real best way to learn is to get in as many matches as possible with some of these starter tips and tricks in mind. Different situations will always arise in different games, so having a base foundation while playing the deck is very important.

Sideboard Guide

Here's what you really came here for. It's hard to make a complete sideboard guide in Modern because there are so many decks, but here are some of the matchups I've faced in the last few Leagues.

Vs. Tron

Vs. Mono-Red Prowess

Vs. Ponza

Vs. Jund (the Mirror)

Vs. Amulet Titan

After playing a handful of matches with Jund, I was surprised to see just how well it's doing in the new Modern format. I'm generally hesitant before recommending Jund because I am very biased, it being my favorite deck. However, I do believe Jund is well positioned right now, and it only gets better when the meta becomes better known. Happy Junding!
