We just had the most data-intensive weekend in Standard's history. Red Bull's Week of Wings Qualifier was a thousand-player event with completely public pairings and standings, as well as more than 400 matches of Magic Pro League and Rivals League play.
We are going to have a crystal clear view of the format, and I'm even skipping the Magic Online metagame chart this week in favor of these matchup charts. Huge thanks to mtgmeta.io, Ball Lightning, Ph.D., and MTG Data for compiling all of this data.
Literally thousands of matches of data. All of it telling you to stop playing Yorion, Sky Nomad.
Last week I said Yorion was the Deck to Beat, and beat it people did. Azorius Yorion in particular got absolutely demolished in both events, while Gruul Aggro smashed both (told you so). Dimir Rogues developed a new Shark Typhoon build, and both versions remain in the top tier.
The dark horse of the weekend was Rakdos Midrange, which put up impressive numbers. As Selesnya Yorion dropped and the countermagic-heavy Azorius Yorion became the Yorion deck of choice, Rakdos Midrange was able to take advantage of the resulting metagame. Rakdos Midrange has excellent matchups against both Gruul Aggro and Dimir Rogues, making it a potent meta-breaker.
Mono-Red Aggro had a strong weekend seemingly out of nowhere, seeing success due to its polarizing matchups lining up well. Strong matchups against Dimir Rogues and Rakdos Midrange made up for its struggles elsewhere.
Golgari Adventures performed well against almost everything except for Yorion decks and Temur Ramp, but the Yorion decks made up too much of the metagame for Golgari Adventures to truly succeed. Temur Ramp suffered a similar fate—it crushed the midrange decks but suffered against Gruul Aggro and Dimir Rogues.
Zendikar Rising Standard has a very flat power distribution, which makes it incredibly important to have the correct positioning. Without a dominating, tier 0 deck, you need to identify the deck with the best matchup spread for each individual weekend. We have a large amount of matchup data, but unless we know the composition of the metagame, it's still difficult to select a deck.
This is where "leveling" comes in. Level Zero is the "best decks." There's no extra work that goes into this level, just identifying the most popular or powerful decks. Last week this was Yorion and to an extent Dimir Rogues. Level One is the decks that beat the decks in Level Zero. Last week this was Gruul Aggro and Rakdos Midrange. Level Two is the decks that beat Level One. Last week this was Golgari Midrange.
From these examples you can already tell that being on the correct level for the weekend can make or break your tournament. If you go too far you risk just losing to the most popular archetypes. To some this may sound like fancy rock-paper-scissors, but it's important to note which level paper is on each week. This is not a format where you can cling to an archetype and just tune it for the week.

This has been the most successful deck for two weeks straight. It's not a format-defining tier 0 deck, but it did not get the respect it deserved last week, and that shows in the results. Respect. Gruul.
Gruul Aggro is the successor to Mono-Green Aggro as the home for The Great Henge and oversized green creatures. Red gives it access to Bonecrusher Giant and Embercleave, as well as incredible options against Dimir Rogues in Phoenix of Ash and Ox of Agonas. The rise of Rakdos Midrange will limit Gruul Aggro's success, but the matchup is only slightly unfavorable.
This week's format should start with Gruul Aggro and Dimir Rogues. These are the pivot points of the format that constrain what other decks can get away with.

Dimir Rogues has changed quite a bit over the past few weeks, but the core of the deck remains. Into the Story is an incredibly powerful draw spell, and Drown in the Loch pulls double duty as removal and countermagic.

Along with Gruul Aggro, Dimir Rogues has shoved Yorion largely out of the winners' metagame. The combination of aggression and countermagic makes it difficult for endgame-focused decks to compete, and when the endgame decks leave the format, traditional midrange looks much stronger.

Yorion, Sky Nomad looked like the best card in Standard for about a week. Things have changed. Yorion was targeted by decks going both over and under it, and in an attempt to stop the decks going over it, Azorius Yorion lost its edge against the rest of the field.
Selesnya Yorion might be positioned well against Gruul Aggro and Rakdos Midrange, but if those are your targets, there are decks that are well positioned against both that aren't as weak to Dimir Rogues.
If you must play Yorion, Sky Nomad, I think the new Jeskai Yorion builds are the place to be. These decks have moved Mazemind Tome to the sideboard, maximizing maindeck countermagic to protect Dream Trawler. Jeskai Yorion has a strong, singular win condition and can close the game quickly behind countermagic.

Temur Ramp was designed to slay Yorion, Sky Nomad, and it did. Unfortunately, it suffers against a wide swath of the format, including Gruul Aggro and Dimir Rogues. With the primary prey leaving the metagame and its worst matchups becoming pillars of the format, I can't recommend Temur Ramp.

This is my pick for Level One this week. Golgari Adventures can grind out other midrange decks and gets on the board quickly against aggressive decks. With the threat of Yorion, Sky Nomad almost gone, Golgari Adventures is poised for a successful weekend.
That said, if the levels shift midweek you could easily find yourself on the wrong end of a hostile format. This isn't the safest choice, but I do think Golgari Adventures is incredibly well positioned if the top three decks remain. Gruul Aggro is a good matchup, and Dimir Rogues and Rakdos Midrange are both favorable.

Mono-Red Aggro had a huge weekend at Red Bull's Week of Wings Qualifier. I'm not sure what caused the popularity of this archetype (perhaps budget concerns), but it does have a good record against both Rakdos Midrange and Dimir Rogues.
If you are playing either of those decks I highly recommend adjusting your sideboard to account for such a low-to-the-ground deck. Mono-Red Aggro's main strength is how fast and cheap its threats are, and even if it looks like "bad Gruul Adventures" right now, people will still play it.

Cycling has quietly had a successful weekend, and it's too early to tell if the win rate is a result of a small sample size and an underprepared field. Cycling will suffer some from the increased graveyard hate of the format, but it still presents a quick kill consistently.
I expect the number of copies of Soul-Guide Lantern to increase, but Cycling may be able to take advantage of the rise in aggressive decks with fewer removal spells and have a good weekend.

As I mentioned earlier, being on the wrong level could be fatal. Golgari Adventures currently looks like the right level to be on, but it's only Wednesday so that may change. Keep your ear to the ground this week (or pay close attention to Twitter), and identify if people are still playing Dimir Rogues and aggro decks. If they are, Golgari Adventures is exactly where I'd want to be. Early plays, ability to grind, and sufficient removal.
If, however, Yorion, Sky Nomad decks and ramp strategies return, I want nothing to do with Golgari Adventures and would shift to Gruul Aggro. Gruul Aggro is probably the safest choice this week as it has a good matchup spread and only really suffers against black midrange decks. Golgari Adventures is a bad matchup, but if nobody has caught on to that yet (or people go a level too far) Gruul Aggro has a solid floor even if the ceiling is lower.

Standard continues to shift rapidly, and I'm very much enjoying the quality and quantity of tournaments we have. This weekend we have the Arena Open as well as the NRG Series Online Trial #3, alongside the weekly Magic Online Challenges. I know it's been a good long while since we had such a shifting format with no clear best deck, but it's been really refreshing, and the gameplay is incredibly deep. Keep your eyes peeled for new tech, check back each week for the analysis of this quick-churning format, and enjoy! Standard looks pretty damn good to me.
