Do you understand how much product's being released in the first half of 2021? I feel like I've been so inundated with new releases over the last few weeks, and it's only going to get crazier with product-hover id="231515", product-hover id="236330", and product-hover id="236385" all coming up fast.

New support for Slifer the Sky Dragon and Obelisk the Tormentor? In 2021? It's a good time to be a duelist, y'all.

With such a huge influx of new cards headed our way, one tiiiiiny little problem presents itself. Sometimes old favorites and the kinds of spicy tech choices that we crazy people like to come up with take a back seat to newer releases. Ultimately, that's probably a good thing - most people would rather read about Time Thiefs, Sunavalon, Cyber Dragon, and Dark Magician. And can I blame them? We've had some amazing support for legacy strategies lately, AND awesome new archetypes to experiment with!

So yeah. With such a busy schedule I'm afraid I've gotta save my Ghostrick Hieratic Frog deck for a special occasion. I guess.

So while I'm looking forward to all the new stuff with an ever-increasing sense of hype, I have to give credit to the wacky ideas that have brought me this far. Independently, I liked both of the strategies I'm working with today, but I never gave much thought to what they could do together until a friend of mine pitched the idea to me.

No Two Things Are Not On Fire

I wouldn't say that literally nobody knows what the Unchained cards do… but it's pretty close. Most of my friends I playtest with know about my affinity for crazy strategies, and if you play Yu-Gi-Oh with me enough, that invariably rubs off on you. But even most of my playtesting circle weren't familiar with these cards. Not counting Unchained Abomination, which appears in several mainstream strategies, the Unchained theme's largely gone unnoticed in the grand scheme of things.

Chaos Impact really came and went without much fanfare when it arrived in October of 2019. Cards like Starliege Seyfert, Striker Dragon, and I:P Masquerena all made big splashes, but the Unchained cards hardly made a ripple, lost in a sea of tepid responses.

I think that's kind of a tragedy, because the Unchained cards are sort of like more comprehensive versions of an older archetype I really liked: the Yang Zing theme. Yang Zing monsters are self-replacing Wyrms that grant extra powers to the Synchro monsters they turn into. It feels similar to how Unchained monsters accrue resources from your graveyard, while replacing themselves, while also acting as catalysts to blow up cards.

The Unchained Twins all have similar effects that pop your cards, and when they die, hooray!, you get a free Unchained monster from your hand or deck. There isn't much to say about them besides the fact that they're all really good, and they're vital to many of your combos and OTK plays. I strongly suggest you run as many copies of them as you can.

The Unchained spells and traps revive and search monsters, but they're also fuel when they get destroyed. Abomination's Prison is awesome to search cards, but I'm split about 50/50 on whether it's better to activate it or destroy it. The answer usually comes down to how your cards play out over the course of a given duel, so I can't really favor one effect over the other.

The Unchained Soul monsters are good and everything, but they mainly exist to facilitate your Unchained Link Monsters, the real stars of this strategy. All three Links work to destroy or steal your opponent's monsters, and everything we've talked about so far is just a series of stepping stones to get to the bigger monsters.

Take your pick: Unchained Soul of Rage and Unchained Soul of Anguish, absorb your opponent's monsters while Unchained Abomination straight up kills them. It's a bit barbaric, but it gets the point across.

That part about stealing your opponent's stuff to make bigger Unchained monsters? It's not always possible, because sometimes your opponent can protect themselves with negation effects. Heck, sometimes they just might not have any monsters to begin with! And that's where the Kaiju come in.

Not only will Kaiju monsters out control cards like Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon, but they give you something to steal with your Unchained effects. And, of course, Interrupted Kaiju Slumber clears boards and likewise blows up your Unchained monsters for effects.

It's a spicier version of Dark Hole with added benefits. What can I say, sometimes falling back on simple effects is enough to create a winning strategy. Not everything has to be an overly complicated 917-step combo. Just blow things up and attack. Pretend it's 2006. Punch your opponent in the face.

It's Combo Time!

When I say "combo," I don't mean that we're ripping through all fifteen monsters in our Extra Deck. Most combos in this strategy are clever ways to leverage Unchained monsters and build up a big board. They're sort of just specific chain links that connect all your cards, and no, that wasn't supposed to be a Yu-Gi-Oh pun.

Let's look at what you can do with a Kaiju, an Unchained Twins monster, and an Unchained spell or trap. We'll go with Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju, Unchained Twins - Aruha, and Escape of the Unchained, but each of those cards has plenty of substitutions in the deck; we're not talking about a three-piece combo that needs three specific cards.

You still have the exact same number of cards, but you've put more than 3000 points of damage on board, and you have two counters against your opponent's moves. Escape of the Unchained will blow up an opposing card and replace your Unchained Twins monster again, while Unchained Soul of Rage can leverage your opponent's monsters for your own Link Summons.

Rinse And Repeat

It's not fair to call this deck a one trick pony, but many of your plays are straightforward, and look pretty similar. Your biggest threats - the Unchained Soul Links and Kaijus - can clear virtually any monster your opponent has.

Heck, the culmination of your deck, Unchained Abomination, literally just destroys everything. It has three different effects, but all of them are different versions of "destroy a card." Scrap Dragon was a powerful, highly competitive Synchro for years, because it removed any threat on the field. Unchained Abomination is cast from the same concept, but it's easier to summon.

That's probably the main reason I like the ratios I wound up on for the two builds I'm going to show you: you'll actually want to see multiple copies of similar cards sometimes. Two Kaijus means you can summon one to your field for more damage, or wipe an opposing monster after Unchained Soul of Rage absorbs it. Access to more than one Unchained Twins card typically yields more damage. Multiple Unchained spell and trap cards means more fodder to blow up.

Let's go ahead and take a look at the more expensive of today's lists first, Pot of Prosperity included. There's also another small Cyberse package in there, which we'll get into in a second.

So, one of the elephants in the room is the intersection of Pot of Prosperity and a varied Extra Deck. What's the point of loading up with lots of different options when you'll no doubt banish entire chunks of your Extra Deck when you throw down your spell?

People draw parallels between Pot of Prosperity and Pot of Desires, but in some ways, they're actually really different. Pot of Prosperity lets you choose which cards you banish, which makes it a far less risky card. I don't want to say that you basically have no Extra Deck when you're playing Pot of Extravagance, but I can't make any promises. You can't rely on your Extra when you don't know what you're going to lose from it.

Accesscode Talker

But when you're playing a more diversified Extra Deck, you can, for all intents and purposes, think of the superfluous cards as extra copies of your "best" cards if that eases your mind. As good as Accesscode Talker is, it's been more or less glorified fodder for Pot of Prosperity in every game I've played with this build. Really expensive and shiny fodder.

To give you an idea, here's a visual representation of Accesscode Talker whenever I banish it along with the other stuff for Pot of Prosperity.

I'm not saying we're holding out for a Knightmare Phoenix that will save us and win the game all by itself, but if you'd consider tripling down on your Unchained cards just for Pot of Prosperity fodder, I think it's better to diversify your "throwaway cards" instead.

Add A Little ☆ Power

Tying in with Pot of Prosperity, I added a third theme to the deck. It's Unchained Kaijus… featuring the Live☆Twins.

Traditionally, the Kaiju engine's usually reserved for decks that want to go second. That makes this deck a bit of a balancing act, trying to add something that makes for good going-first options without disrupting the natural disposition of the strategy. Any additional theme has to function whether you're going first or second.

Ultimately, the Evil Twin Link Monsters offer two more options for going first, with the caveat that they also provide monster spam for Link climbing when you're going second. But let's focus on the going-first aspect, since it's the main reason I decided to play them.

First, Live Twin Lil-la and Live Twin Ki-sikil interact with their Evil Twin counterparts to get you draws while destroying your opponent's cards. A single copy of either Live Twin may consume several of your Extra Deck slots, but it's a tight combo that works to your benefit in virtually all situations. If you want a pure Live Twin deck, check out this one I made a few months ago.

More importantly they make Artifact Dagda, and thus set Artifact Scythe straight from your deck. You have several ways to pop cards on your opponent's turn - the main one being Unchained Twins - Aruha - but this presents a legitimately good opening turn when you go first, whether by choice or force.

You won't have to worry about building an ironclad defense if you can simply field Artifact Scythe. Next turn, you'll have the fuel you need to OTK your opponent, since they haven't even touched their Extra Deck!

Thankfully, Pot of Desires and Pot of Prosperity do more than enough to mitigate this weird spread of Kaijus, Unchained, and Live Twins. In a 40-card deck with no Pots, your hands would be pretty weird, but here you can make your way through the weeds for opening hands that won't pinch your resources.

Also, a single Ki-sikil or Lil-la turns into Unchained Abomination. I like that the "worst case scenario" for those additions is summoning the best monster in your deck.

No One's Making You Play Accesscode Talker

Every deck has a litany of cards required to make the deck go, but through customization and niche plays, your decklist can start creeping up in price if you keep pursuing every possibility. It's a big reason competitive Yu-Gi-Oh can be so expensive right now - there are so many add-ons, and they add up fast. Thankfully, the Unchained core is very affordable. It's impossible for me to expect literally everyone to have three copies of every card that exists.

Heck, in real life, I don't even own a Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon anymore. It got really old really fast.

Thankfully, the savings don't end with ditching Red-Eyes Dark Dragoon and picking up Unchained. Even the Kaiju engine's on the cheap side. Interrupted Kaiju Slumber will run you a few bucks, but not much is expensive beyond that. It reminds me a lot of my Dual Avatar deck , where everything was cheap except Fusion Deployment. Sometimes you do have to dole out a dollar or two. Life ain't free.

While it might seem like a tall order to drop so many cards, cutting the deck down to a wallet-friendly version isn't that hard. Pot of Prosperity amazing, but the consistency it provided was partially used to offset the third part of the deck - the Live Twins. So let's cut out the Live Twins!

How best to supplement that loss? You can double down on the Unchained to fill that space. I understand that Wailing of the Unchained Souls isn't all it's cracked up to be, but it's more destruction fodder for your Unchained Twins.

The same thing goes with the Extra Deck, taking this version into full-on budget territory. The Knightmare monsters have been pretty inexpensive ever since Toon Chaos dropped, and the most expensive Unchained card is about five dollars. If you're really stuck, you can always run a second Knightmare Phoenix instead of playing three Unchained Soul of Rage.

Which… is really exactly what I'm advocating for. It's extremely uncommon, and I mean extremely extremely uncommon, that you'll need to summon three copies of any of your Unchained Link Monsters. You'll probably have won by that point anyways.

Just remember: beat your opponents before they beat you.
