Tamiyo, Collector of Tales is a strange Planeswalker. We're sort of used to the idea of planeswalkers as this dominant type of permanent. How many times have you played a game in Constructed, Draft, or some kind of Cube where the whole game boils down to, "Can this planeswalker remain intact long enough to take over the game?"

That usually involves the board being taken over in some way. Ugin draws you a million cards and dumps permanents into play, while hurling colorless Lightning Bolt around in the meantime. Elspeth, Sun's Champion creates a huge board, then makes it huger and evasive-y. Liliana of the Veil cuts our opponent's permanents in half, at best. You get the idea.

But Tamiyo, Collector of Tales very different. She's almost completely board agnostic except for her passive ability, which is sometimes totally irrelevant. Other than that, she fairly consistently mills us, occasionally regrowing something. It seems powerful, but is it? And what can we do to make that strong?

When I was trying to come up with this deck, there was a weekend where Innistrad Draft was a flashback format on Magic Online. I spent a Saturday co-piloting a bunch of drafts with my playgroup, then it occurred to me some of the Memory's Journey/Runic Repetitionmight work well with Tamiyo, Collector of Tales. And I'd get the chance to play with a strange rare I've always liked but never played.

I'm still not sure if this deck is any good, but I feel like it would be really fun to play:

The Game Plan

Stay defensive and buy time until we have a ton of mana and can start playing and replaying our powerful spells—eventually killing with Roar of the Wurm tokens, rebuying the Roar of the Wurm with Runic Repetition, and shuffling that back with Memory's Journey. Hopefully we'll only need a couple 6/6s to seal the deal. Trumpeting Herd can fill a similar role—it might be worse, but it's cheaper.

Our early offense is nonexistent. Wall of Blossoms, Yavimaya Elder, and Jungle Barrier block extremely well, though! Coiling Oracle is expendable once it's gotten us our card (or land). Same thing with Eternal Witness. Moment's Peace can put plenty of fuel in the fog machine, while Growth Spiral or Spring can get us going on the land front. Propaganda is the best possible speed bump we can ask for, and Blinding Spray can be a poor man's Moment's Peace or Propaganda in a pinch.

Once we get into the later game, we're just hoping to get a bunch of triggers for Tatyova, Benthic Druid, or consistent activations of the innocuous-looking River Hoopoe. Keeping a pile of cards flowing should let us get some of our bombs like Aether Mutation, and the rest of our deck is decent at regrowing such effects for multiple uses.

Our removal is extremely bad, but things like Aether Mutation can provide such a huge tempo boost, it can make up for not having any other ways to remove threats (although some of our regrowth effects can act as additional removal).

The Rares

First of all, as a 4/4 flyer Uyo, Silent Prophet can just dominate some board states. And even though it's got a six-mana price tag, we often won't be crushed about that rate. But Uyo, Silent Prophet real power comes from her ability, letting us copy powerful spells for hopefully substantial shenanigans. We can use it on all manner of things—I definitely recommend Growth Spiral to totally negate Uyo, Silent Prophet downside while drawing us an extra card. It also doesn't hurt to copy Trumpeting Herd to develop our board, although I have no idea how rebound works with a copy (hopefully favorably).

The rare I was most excited to play. Tamiyo, Collector of Tales can dump stuff into our yard, but how best to make use of them? With former "Block Constructed Has-Been" Holistic Wisdom, we can use less valuable cards in our hand to regrow some of that new graveyard fodder quickly, and bonus points if the things we're removing have flashback to get recruited again via the repetitions. It might feel like we're spinning our wheels for no reason, but if we can regain the exiled fodder with the repetitions, we can generate some extra value and keep the gas flowing.

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't really have specific Gifts Ungiven piles in mind when I assigned it to this deck. But I feel like between Tamiyo, Collector of Tales, Eternal Witness, and Restock there'll be ways to get back whatever you want, as long as you have some time to get it all rocking. And there's gotta be some fun piles to make in a pinch. Gifts Ungiven has always been a pretty sweet spell, although it's never been interested in fairness. I'm sure our opponents will agree. Sorting through Gifts Ungiven piles can sometimes seem like a trap, but I find it's usually an interesting one.

Years ago, my buddies and I went to our first Prerelease (Judgment), and in our prize packs one of us opened Spelljack. You can imagine the terror that followed in our games at the school lunch tables when six mana was open. Spelljack is a very cool counterspell that will likely decide games. Obviously, our ability to counter spells is somewhat limited, with only Spelljack and the Frilled Mystic on the roster. So we're naturally inclined to try and save them for the most dangerous threats from our opponents—maybe a rare, or their own planeswalker, or some critical removal spell. Spelljack kind of reminds me of this meme:

Unsung Hero

Good ol' Roar of the Wurm is a longtime favorite. First of all, the art absolutely rocks. It really reminds me of the Shai-Hulud from Dune, which I'd read just before I played with Roar of the Wurm for the first time. Secondly, I really enjoy how they played with the costs to communicate we should cast this with flashback instead of straight up.

At that Judgment Prerelease I mentioned earlier, I had a Psychatog and the Roar of the Wurm (lucky me), and it was cool realizing I could have a really fast 6/6 if I was willing to discard it and forego the option to cast it straight up first. For someone who had spent a ton of time only playing at the kitchen table, this was a fun little Level Up moment.

Thirdly, 6/6s are awesome, and we will absolutely smash our opponent with them. And I say "them" because once we flash it back, there's no more an attractive target for our Runic Repetition than the Roar of the Wurm. And hopefully we'll get to cast it multiple times. If we do, I can't imagine we'll lose many of those games. The spice must flow!
