I dunno what it is about Tamiyo, Field Researcher that makes me love it. Maybe it's the three colors? We get so few of those, especially if we don't consider the variants of Nicol Bolas. Maybe it's because I really like the character Tamiyo? She seems so relatively peaceful, but also not someone to be trifled with. Maybe it's the goofy set of abilities that scream, "Play me with creatures!" I do like playing with creatures.

It's tough to explain the exact thought process for this deck, but here was the inspiration: I wanted a large number of creatures that could hold their own on a battlefield. After all, we're dealing with green and white creatures here. But I didn't want these creatures to be massive—that's something to expect from a Naya deck, or maybe an Abzan. For a Bant offering? We want creatures that offer some play. Some tricks. Maybe some card draw to go with Tamiyo, Field Researcher flavor.

With that said, let's see what we've got for Bant Tamiyo:

The Game Plan

Manage the opponent's creatures with a bevy of freezing effects. Tamiyo, Field Researcher ability, Rage of Winter, Press for Answers, Blinding Beam, Spire Patrol, Mystic Restraints, and Time of Ice all keep opposing creatures from making it through the untap step. In the meantime, Bant Sureblade and Rhox War Monk hold the fort or attack past similarly costed creatures, and a small smattering of flying creatures or the fat we can muster put away the final points.

Speaking of Rhox War Monk, it's hard to do better than Rhox War Monk himself at the three-drop slot. 3/4 and Lifelink for only 3 mana is a hell of a bargain. As the game wears on, Sunscape Battlemage offers an incredible bonus—the extra two cards or the destruction of a flyer can swing a game. Messenger Falcons, Spire Patrol, and Waveskimmer Aven are kind of doofy, but they're all evasive and provide something other than a body with wings. Skyward Eye Prophets can generate an insurmountable advantage, and Lorescale Coatl can grow too large for the opponent to handle.

Our spells offer ways to stay in the game at any point. Tamiyo's Epiphany and Mysteries of the Deep can keep the gas tank full, the charms and crystallization offer some removal that aren't just freezing effects, and Channel Harm is a fantastic (though expensive) Fog.

The Rares

I first learned about this card while reading an Inquest Magazine 20 years ago. A five-color Domain deck in Invasion/Planeshift Block Constructed won a tournament, and the Questing Phelddagrif was the main kill condition. I was so stumped! It gives your opponent all this stuff, how could that be good? Turns out, you can use those abilities sparingly, and it's very difficult to kill. And that's what we need to keep in mind as the Questing Phelddagrif is on the battlefield. Don't feed it too much—it's very hungry and will eat forever if you don't show some restraint. But feed it right, and the opponent is next on the menu.

Lightning Angel is one of my all time favorite creatures, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that I really liked the look of Stoic Angel when she first saw print. She never really fit into any format, but it's still a solid creature and I'm hoping this will provide something of a fresh start for the Stoic Angel. With our freezing effects, she should be able to hold down the opponent's board effectively, and we've got a couple exalted creatures of our own to allow for attacking in quality over quantity.

I think I ended up with one of these from buying an EDH precon some years back. I was a little surprised to see it in the rares box, but it perfectly fits what this deck wants to do—a small creature that's a bit tricksy and can swing a game.

Right up there against Chains of Mephistopheles as Most Confusing Card on a rules level. The nature of this format lets us dodge most of the real Mirrorweave head-scratchers, and thankfully we can just get in some reps with an extremely powerful card. Playing with Mirrorweave against a bunch of big green creatures or enemy creatures with death triggers is a blast. Useful when ahead or behind, get ready for some fireworks when Mirrorweave enters the mix. If you're feeling bold, google Mirrorweave and layers and try to keep your brain from overheating trying to comprehend the reddit questions about how those rules all fit together.

Unsung Hero

I don't hide my love of charms, and Bant Charm is my favorite of them all. Although you'll likely use the creature removal mode, any of the three choices can prove potent in a game. Keep in mind that although this doesn't actually kill a creature, it's often more useful that way—it moves its target to a zone much harder to interact with than the graveyard. The artifact destruction comes in handy sometimes as well, and the counterspell option will always come up big, just because of how difficult it is to play around. My rule of thumb is that charms are worth consideration if two of three modes are something worth getting excited about. And with Bant Charm, we're excited about the entire package.
