Is Teferi, Time Raveler the most obnoxious Planeswalker to ever see print? Thankfully no. In addition to its litany of other accolades, Oko, Thief of Crowns is more remarkably annoying. But Teferi, Time Raveler is up there. Not letting your opponent play anything at Instant-speed is extremely disruptive. It sometimes doesn't seem like it until you play with it on the other side. Then it's clear pretty quickly, and it's unfun in that way you'll never forget.

I'm not sure if Teferi, Time Raveler was too powerful per se for Standard, but it was annoying and unfun. So where does that leave us?

Well, last time we were dealing with Teferi, Hero of Dominaria, we were making use of his mastery of time and space via suspend and phasing.

This time, I wanted to be more literal. I wanted to take advantage of as many things as I could that referenced or dealt with time.

Unfortunately, the most iconic effects in that space were spells that let us take extra turns. Time Warp and the like. But most of those effects are printed at mythic rare these days, so that option was out. Still, if I could find things that referenced time, or some sort of temporal manipulation, we were in business.

I also found inspiration with the Azorius ability from the second Ravnica block. Detain seems like a perfect flavor match for a really effective and annoying thing Teferi, Time Raveler would get a kick out of. Causing creatures to skip combat steps, or opponents to skip things—these are activities a proper Teferi, Time Raveler would revel in.

The Game Plan

Ideally, we prevent our opponent from doing literally anything. Their creatures are detained, they can't play spells at instant speed, they have to skip at least one, but hopefully multiple, phases. Once we get to that point, any of our evasive bodies should finish the job at our leisure. Or maybe our opponent just quits and decides to do something more fun and fulfilling with their time.

Our creatures don't pack fantastic size, so it's up to their abilities and our tricks to pull ahead. We want to be aggressive if we're detaining creatures, so make sure we're in a situation where we can attack before stopping up the other side of the board. We've got a moderate amount of evasion, so getting in damage from flyers isn't outside the realm of possibility.

Lots of our spells do a great job of slowing the opponent, so take advantage wherever possible. Worried about a race? Stonehorn Dignitary and Exhaustion can prove clutch in those situations. Temporal Eddy, Time Ebb, and Time of Ice can all slow the opponent down dramatically and hinder their development. Queen of Ice, her adventurous spell side, Chillbringer, and Capture Sphere can keep creatures down for the count indefinitely while the detention squad of Azorius Arrester, Lyev Skyknight, and Azorius Justiciar makes the opposing board assume the position. Look for Settle Beyond Reality to remove a key creature and reset a detainer for maximum punishment.

The Rares

Teferi, Time Raveler put out the call for things that care about time, and things that care about being annoying. Fatespinner kills two birds with one stone. At the beginning of the game, our opponent won't likely care about their combat step, so that's probably what they'll skip. As the game goes on, that step will be more important as they probably can't win without it, and that's where Fatespinner gets really valuable. Skipping a draw step, a chance to cast spells, or combat is a hell of a choice. Thank goodness we don't have to make it! In your face, opponents!

Not long before I started playing competitively, Blinding Angel was the finisher of choice for control decks. It had a large toughness value that was hard to punch through, and once it started to connect a few times it was easy to take over the game completely. Unfortunately it was a creature that had to share a Standard environment with the mighty Flametongue Kavu, and once the Flametongue Kavu was printed, Blinding Angel went extinct and was never heard from again. Here though, she's back to her old, very annoying ways. She might not hit for a lot of damage, but some attackers are worth more than the damage they deal. I've also got to take a moment to mention that Blinding Angel Nemesis printing, with the old card frame, looks absolutely incredible.

A reset button in a UW deck that has the word time in it, and art and flavor text that both reference Teferi, Time Raveler? This is what those in the know call a Total Package. The Flavor Slam Dunk.

Is Dig Through Time broken? Well, yes. It's good enough to be banned in a ton of formats, and rightfully so. But in this deck, it'll be late in the game before it costs less than five mana, so it's much more difficult to take advantage of here than in other shells. The card selection provided here is incredible—if you haven't cast this card before, you'll marvel at how deep seven cards are. Usually in a game I find myself thinking about which cards I'd really want to see on the next draw step. When casting Dig Through Time, think about your wishlist. It'll be easy to get distracted with the options when you have seven cards to choose from. Make sure you consider your priorities before resolving it.

Unsung Hero

If Teferi, Time Raveler cares about time raveling, it's my hope he'd love a Soulherder. After all, our Seb McKinnon-drawn spirit friend here will essentially hit rewind every turn, "replaying" a dangerous threat to re-trigger an ETB ability. Every. Single. Turn. (For free). It's like Groundhog Day, except instead of eventually turning us into a better person who fully realizes the consequences of their actions, our opponent will quit and curse our names. But hey, sometimes there isn't a moral to the story. Unless that moral is: don't play against Teferi, Time Raveler. For us, that's a pretty acceptable lesson!
