The last couple of times we've seen Blue/White Teferis, Standard players the world over trembled. Playing against those Teferis — either of them — in most Constructed formats is kind of like that part in The Matrix where Agent Smith's got Neo in the choke hold on the train tracks. Unlike that scene though, most of the time Agent Smith wins, and the opponent gets hit by that inevitable train.

This time though, we've got Teferi, Who Isn't Broken This Time Slows the Sunset, and it's clear that WotC has eliminated the potential for format-defining funny business. It's almost a call back to the Walkers 5+ years ago, when we get more generic mid-rangey options where we're most likely to toggle back and forth between the Plus and Minus abilities to eke out value.

Because Teferi is a bit generic, I wanted to take the opportunity to build around the Blue/White theme that takes hold in all of the visits to Innistrad so far: Spirits! And, in the (removes sunglasses) spirit of Innistrad: Midnight Hunt's imminent release, we should also focus on Flashback and the new Disturb mechanic.

Who's got Spirit? Yes we do!

The Game Plan

Bad news first: We aren't terribly fast, despite having plenty of cheaper things to do. Lots of the Disturb creatures are extremely underwhelming on the front side, and their bodies are not fantastic on the stats. So it's unlikely that we can put games away rapidly. Good news though: between the Disturb creatures and the Flashback spells, we have a tremendous amount of gas in the tank relative to most other decks in this field. As long as we aren't horrifically manascrewed in games, we should be able to have stuff to do deep into any given game.

Our early creatures are not going to make big impacts on the board. Chaplain of Alms, Luanrch Veteran, and Beloved Beggar aren't world beaters. But they'll hold the fort and give us some minor incremental advantages until it's time to trade them off. Then we'll upgrade them into their disturbed sides, which are much more impressive.

Of the early drops we're most excited about, Devoted Grafkeeper is right up there at the top of the list. Being able to tap stuff down once we start Disturbing will let us flip the switch from doofy middling creatures to getting in chunks of damage to put the game away, and it even gives us a little fuel for graveyard shenanigans to boot. Azorius Herald is a rare source of lifegain and evasive attacking that can get started right away.

Once we hit the midgame, some of our all-stars begin to shine. Martyr's Soul is either going to be a random mundane creature or a heavy hitter, depending on the board state. Moonlit Strider is a fantastic blocker, great meat shield, and helpful card advantage engine. Pillardrop Rescuer and Roaming Ghostlight both have unimpressive stats, but their ETB triggers make them valuable contributors.

Most of our spells fall under the "glue guy" category than "heavy hitter" but that's okay — we'll never be short on playables here, and the amount of game actions we can take later let us take the hit on quality early. Faithful Mending and Scour All Possibilities give us some early card selection and lets us get rid of unwanted cards (likely lands) later. My guess is that Marshaling Cry will likely be cycled and then flashed back for some extra value, again helping keep the flow of cards or enable a nice attack. Feeling of Dread and Grasp of Phantoms are nice tempo moves that let us help close the door. Temporal Isolation and Spirit Flare are fantastic combat tricks.

We're a little lacking on good removal here, with Borrowed Time our only real big gun. But Fervent Denial and Overrule will help keep the bad guys away, and Mysterious Tome can sometimes flip into an Icy.

The Rares

This is another creature we're extremely happy to see early in the game. For 2 mana, a 2/3 lifelinker is a phenomenal backstop that will keep the pressure away and let us develop our mana. It also protects our Disturb fuel for later in the game when reinforcements show up. And if Dennick gets got, it can come back at a relatively inexpensive rate to give us an evasive beater that keeps the cards flowing with its investigative abilities. All in all, probably the card we're most hoping to see in our opening hand!

We're playing a lot of Spirits, so a Lord is always welcome. Plus, it cuts us a break on our Disturb/Flashback antics, and that savings is clutch. This Geist is the card in the deck that leans hardest into our overall themes.

Way back when, during Dungeon Geists' first appearance, I thought that it was going to be a huge card and traded for a ton of copies after Finkel's deck got into the Top 8 of Pro Tour Dark Ascension.  That didn't really catch on, unfortunately, probably because Restoration Angel got printed a few months later and blew up my spot. But the old Geists are back in action here! We can shackle up the best creature on the other side while presenting a respectable evasive threat. Maybe not a world beater, but it will heavily contribute to wins when it shows up.

If there's one dead horse I beat constantly in these columns, it's that Odyssey Block cards are really sweet. But if there's a second dead horse I beat constantly, it's that Kamigawa Block Legends have the coolest names. Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens is a great example. What a killer name, and some extremely weird art to go with it. It is quite expensive, but if we can land it, pretty much any other topdecks or Disturbances will build out our board and make it tough to stop.

Unsung Hero

The text on Disturb tells us that once the Disturbed creatures die, it's exiled instead of returning to the yard for future shenanigans. But, critically, that's the only big zone change that stops our troops. And since all Disturbed creatures are Spirits, the Spectral Shepherd here can indefinitely recycle our Disturb creatures, even if it makes the game take longer. Thankfully we're already playing for the long game! Good luck to our opponents trying to attrition us out here. They'll need it.
